That's speaking well, because they do have very different sounds. ;)

Well, if you're a native english speaker, they can have very much the same sound when speaking quickly, as you drop the 'H' in 'Have' and pronounce the 'A' similarly to the 'O' in 'Oven'. But regardless of the ease of mixing up the SOUNDS, the MEANINGS are so different (preposition vs. verb...REALLY?) that I'm definitely with you guys in saying that mixing the two up (of vs. have) is a horrible and unforgivable mistake :P

I'm pretty sure that the "of" sound doesn't come from should have, but from the contraction, should've. It sounds like "shuh dove". No one actually says "should have" informally, they all say should've.

which is precisely why we use a contraction when we write the word - "should've" rather than writing it phonetically "should of".
