Changing the voice doesn't change the music. The notes are still the same.

When people listen to music, they don't listen to JUST music, they also listen to how it's performed, arranged and produced, for example, they might like particular choice of instruments and voices used. The same is with games, you don't simply play some gameplay, you play it in context of whole atmosphere including graphics and sounds.

Changing the singers voice does affect the music. By that I mean, what you are listening to now sounds different.

Dont get all weird and pretentious about music to try and prove you are right. If the singer changes, the sound of the entire song changes.

Music != sounds. Music is sequence of tones. Changing vocals doesn't change the music (i.e. the primary frequencies in the melody and harmony), but it does change what you hear and can affect your overall perception and attitude towards it.

When you say that Quake is only gameplay and voice means nothing, then by exactly same logic music is only score and who sings them means nothing. If you are willing to accept that there are things in music beyond score that can make it better or ruin it, then you must accept that there are things in quake beyond gameplay that can make it better or ruin it.

Just as you find completely sensible that "in a song, the sound changing is a HUGE deal", even though sound has nothing to do with music, you need to understand that other people find perfectly sensible that "in quake, annuncer changing is a HUGE deal" even if it's not part of gameplay. In other words, when you listen to a song, you don't listen to music only (pure musical score), you also listen to how it's interpreted by musicians and producers. And by analogy, when some people play quake, they too experience not just bare gameplay, but also the context and atmosphere, of which announcer is a big part.

When people say they can't play because of VO, they don't see quake through your eyes. You can adapt to any VO - that's great, but some people can't. If someone adapted nicely to not having legs and feels he has no problems in life because of it, it doesn't mean it's okay to cut off legs for everyone.

Even more strongly - not everyone can tolerate as much crap in quake as you can. For everyone there's a limit of how much crap he can live with. Some people immediately quit because they can't look at ugly QL fonts, some people draw the line at announcer, and yet some others can endure anything id software throws at them.

Lets not compare cutting peoples legs off to changing someones voice in a video game. Having no legs is clearly something that you would have a right to be upset about. A new VO for quake, not so much.

If it helps, I'd rather they didnt change the VO too. But I'm over it now and the game is no less fun to play.

This is my complaint with the cvar argument, the commands "work" but they don't cover all of the VO, so you're still stuck with it for a variety of things that you can't turn off.

I couldn't agree more and already stopped playing myself. It's not just the announcer, it's what it fucking represents. ID has done some not so great updates before but this one trumps them all.

There was no reason to change the announcer, it didn't and won't bring any more players, especially when its 1000 times more crappy (and i can't emphasize this enough) than the original one, wich was great. Even playing with announcer off doesn't work, once you go make a clip of a demo in wolfcam (if it even works due to the new .dm90 protocol zZzzZzz) you'll find the shitty announcer there. Basically Quakelive is ruined forever and the fact that something perfectly working and a staple of Quake like the first announcer was gets replaced by this hideous voice of a dying goat suffering from diarrhea with absolutely no logic or need in the first place just shows how random half the decisions are when it comes to the direction of this game and where ID/whoever stands in them.

You know, AT LEAST replace it with something good. This is beyond horrible and incredibly half assed. Or better yet, DON'T replace it, but I guess that'd be asking too much. Time to move on friend, QL is now dogshit.

So you missed the shitstorm when they recorded just a couple of extra VO's needed for team games, that used the original artist (Xian) and people were livid it didn't sound the same (yay, time).

They'd wanted to redo the VO's for years so they could have them unified and do all the extra effects it has now, covering both new announcements and giving multiple effects for often repeated ones to make it more interesting.

I hate it too! And disabling it isnt the same as having the old one. The hardcore 3 2 1 FIGHT, i deeply miss it.

This coped with the fact that at least in the region i play, its only CA now, and the time i wasnt able to play bc of the steam update fucking the auth server, im not renewing my sub when the current one ends. I was one truly quakelive fanboy, no more, im not enjoying it anymore.

The moment I heard the new voice, I instantly deleted quake and formatted my hard drive. Then I unsubscribed from QL and called my lawyer so that he demands full refund from id software for all the years I paid. I would ask for moral damages, but my soul is now empty of everything and moral no longer means anything to me.

Quake was the last game from the great era of great computer games, and now it's finished. The announcer was the game and the game was the announcer. When they changed it to counter-strike like feeble incompetent squeaking, I knew that my memories is now the only place where remains that feel of air-rocket packed dense adrenaline fighting competitive action explosion. Id software sold themselves in slavery to consumer commercial RPG maker, and with that they sold the ideals, hopes and freedom of the last standing heroes of true arena FPS. Anything is now impossible, and the announcer is the way for new Bethesda overlords to laugh at our despair bathing in Skyrim dollars.
