I'm pretty sure that's what he means by "NKRO". Being able to press ANY 6 keys (normally we do 4-5), as opposed to shit like selective anti-ghosting that still prohibits playing on RDFG etc.

So the answer is: everything that you need will be preserved :)

no, usb does 6kro and ps/2 nkro, as in: as many keys as your faceplanting will strike.

I use PS/2 for completely different reason (instant handling from interrupts instead of waiting for getting polled as it works over USB).

But really, I was trying to simulate 7+KRO.

I just never hit over 5 when playing Quake. And I actually do type item times using numpad with the right hand while jumping around, so I play both hands on keyboard at times. Otherwise I'm doing 4KRO.

6 is more than enough.

Connector type has nothing related to anti-ghost feature because:
a) its a keyboard circuit design task
b) both USB and PS/2 are serial interfaces

windows only accepts 6kro through usb because windows. It's not a hardware or connection problem.

It's limitation of USB protocol's HID class.

If you check HID specification (page 70), you will see that each time the keyboard reports state, it reports:
- modifier keys: left and right Shift, Ctrl, Alt, GUI (list on page 66)
- keys pressed: a1 a2 a3 a4 a5 a6 (there's place for exactly 6)

So the keyboard maintains its state and sends full state each time, and there's space in the protocol for 6 keys + 8 modifiers (so technically up to 14 keys pressed ;)).


PS/2 just sends key strokes. Doesn't save any state - all state is maintained by the computer. The computer gets an event for each press of a button, whether it's Shift or Enter, and needs to remember what is pressed, until it gets notified that a button was released.


Is that a hardware limitation if the same hardware can report 100 keys being pressed at once if you use a simple plug converter? I guess it depends on what we define as hardware :)

That is true, looks like a standard HID keyboаrd report limitation -- which can be fixed with custom controller/drivers 8-)

At the same time my old Mitsumi (PS/2) has A-S-W ghost sequence while Genius (USB) works even with full-cross A-S-D-W-X :-P

It also depends on how the keyboard itself is designed. If the grid is shit/cheap, it'll block out clusters of key because the circuit they use is already closed.

You can get more than 6kro with usb but the keyboard itself has to spread the keys around virtual peripherals and it can get quite wonky under linux or osx.

Soarer's converter allows NKRO on PS/2 keyboards that support it in hardware, over USB.

The HID standard allows NKRO, nothing Windows cannot handle.
The problem is compatibility with legacy systems, boot environments in particular, they depend on 6KRO.
