If you are good enough to earn some money in a game you will just not want to donate it back. afterall it was a lot of effort to reach that level and one should at least have some reward for it i.e keeping all your winnings. So no they have no obligation to donate anything.

Business as usual for the QL community. 10 or so people write code or features to improve the game, everyone else leeches

don't forget about the streamers.

most "pros" aren't getting paid.
they play and provide us entertainment for free.
they do have a chance of winning but most don't.

It's the communities job to fund raise for community tournaments.
That's if you believe prizes are needed.
They're nice but it should be about the guts and glory, and recognition in the community.

If the "pros" had an obligation to the community, from my perspective it would be to teach people how to quakey.

Spot on mate, so many "quakers" just want everything for free and all they do is moan.
The pros who are making a bit of money from the game should donate a bit back into the game / community, at least sub qlranks a tenner.
So many players moan about the game they "love" so much, yet wont even buy a sub, even at 50% off which is around 11.00gbp for a whole year, wtf guys, come on, stick your hands in your pockets you tight gits!

i dunno, but cmon... if you won over a few thousand dollars, you could donate a few bucks... i think its more lazyness then anything else.

I wouldn't say any pro player has an obligation to 'donate' back to the community. It's fantastic when they do, but at no point will I ever feel betrayed if they don't.

I think it's brilliant that the 'pros' who have been around for so long continue to play. It keeps a pulse running through the community and motivates the fans to play more.

If they do, great. If they dont, no shame. Thats whty its called a donation.

well alot of people donated money to see players attend tournaments, so pro player saw, first hand, how community works in that regard, why can't they connect 1 + 1 and give a little back to the community? ofc its not an obligation when you accept donations, but what about completing the circle / maintaining the circle?

The thing about a donation is that it's not a trade. That's why it is called donation. Hence why nobody should feel obligated to donate as a result of receiving donations.

Maybe you could call it a trade in terms of people donating and in return seeing the pros play on stream. The pros trade their performance.

Hypothetically, if one would allocate money for quake :

$3/mo = personal pro subscription $40
$10/mo = additional donations to tournaments measured in tens of thousands
$15/mo = additional university fund for zoot and other new quality stream caster nearly full time
$20/mo = more personalized web services like qlranks
$30/mo = pass out in piles of money

Remind yourself that most "pro's" in Quake are not professional in the sense that they can make a living out of playing Quake. If you think not, please name more than 3 players that make more than half of their living of playing Quake the last year? evil, cypher and....?

You should be happy that you can see them still playing. They earn less than what would be considered a minimum wage in most countries, considering the amount of time they spent practisting. They probably spent equal amount of time playing Quake as many who compete in the Olympics, NHL or the top fotball players spend time practisting.(Consider that Q3 turned 15 years some days ago).

Even if they did earn more, they are not obligated to "donate".

That said, QLRANKS still deserve donations.

What they earned with quake is perceived more like an off the job project extra side money, so no i am not talking in that sens.

how would we give more awareness to donate to projects like qlranks? Talking about it? making posters about it? talking to pros about it, so they can talk publicly about it and showing us by example that making a donation is nice.

I don't think qlranks is in financial trouble right now (do you have a current source for that?), so your whole premise is wrong. No need to raise awareness for that.

Furthermore, if it ever needs money to continue the community will surely donate more than enough, like it already has had for years, so even in the case one day qlranks needs money again still that won't be an issue.


With that said, come to think of it qlranks and every other quake related project is not in a dire need of money to continue or to happen, so there isn't a need for donating and donating won't solve a thing. Their current and potential issues come from different sources, such as id software itself and its policies.

Players don't need money to travel to non-existent lans, the online cups and everything else keeps on happening whether "pros" donate or not and frankly even if someday they lack money to continue at this point people should finance their own hobby and personal ventures, strenx, evil, tox and streamers included.


Now to answer your question in the OP:
1.- Quake was and is on LANs and online cups for these many years solely because of former quakers that are still passionate about the game, "giving back to the community". Quake on ESL, Dreamhack, UGC, CPL, ESWC, ASUS, UGC, faceit, 125fps, zotac, gdata, zowie,showmatches, Quakecon even makes no sense from a business point of view since quake has no viewers, no players and no sponsors in comparison to other games, so they are and were there because of people like carmac, blaze, stermy, 2gd and other pros working in the shadows, etc. etc. and many volunteers for free or that do it for practically free (that includes zeroql). They aren't mentioned here because people like filo prefer to complain and make assumptions instead.
2.- Do you think it makes financial sense for syncerror to work at id software in such a small project as Quake Live is? No, so he must be still working on it because he likes quake a lot.
3.- 125fps is the only remaining organization that still frequently hosts quake cups and is financed by anonymous russian "Alexey A.", with dozens of thousands of dollars so far. The name of the player called b100.death is.... Alexey Alexeyev
4.- Do you know who sponsors the pre-quakecon cups? Fatality. Did you know winz paid for evil to attend quakecon 2013 (btw that event would have been awful without that), or that Lakerman donated $1400 for the swedish championship?
5.- The only major advertising quake ever got was from former players, in the form of streams, advertising them personally because they are known figures, etc. To come with an extreme example, maybe QL wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Notch, even though we don't know if he has financed something quake related.
6.- What keeps QL running is subscription money. "Pros" and people that really like the game to continue are those that subscribe, because frankly for what you get subbing makes no sense in QL ($36 a year for a 15 year old game?).
7.- In the end I think that instead of complaining you should realize that the only things id software provided for quake were vanilla Q3, QL and only in recent years a part of the prize quakecon prize pool and a separate room for the first days of the gaming event. Practically everything else you have seen over the years came from somebody else that did it for free, including getting the prize pool and all the organization involved, even at quakecon itself. Here complaining about lack of involvement of players is almost an insult.

But yes volunters/helpers/ even players do a lot for quake, from shear love/addiction for the game and that is appreciated.

I have donated to various sites, including QLRanks. The biggest donation I have made, however, is paying for a game that I purchased 15 years ago, on a monthly basis just to continue to be able to play it.

Qlranks should be part of ql in the first place so whoever created it wouldn't need donations

devs\id\bethesda\illuminati didnt bother to implement proper ladders in the first place, it didnt have to be exacly like qlranks
