I can give you some broad/general advice but the specifics of what you are asking for generally come through experience. But here is a tip to avoid a common pitfall I feel many players make. Your mileage may vary...

Don't be afraid to play more than one map when learning duel. I see a lot of newer duelers straight up refuse to play anything but one map. I get the concept behind learning a map entirely before switching, but you will likely burn out quicker. Just pick two or three common maps so you can get more games against more people.

Also never make the excuse that you don't know the map. I have seen players who have been playing quake MUCH longer than me say they can't play a map because they don't know it. Take a minute and just think about how silly this sounds. How will you ever learn the map if you don't play it! This is even more humorous when the comment is made by someone who has several hundred or even thousand games on a single map :)

Pick a single map and focus on it. I suggest you to pick DM13 (Lostworld).

That map forces you to learn the concept of weapon advantage/control, which you may consider secondary to items control, but in fact it's not.

Dm13 is about rocket and shaft. Shaft is in a place rocket dominates. Rocket is in a place shaft dominates. A lot of the imbalanced game (one player in control, on out of controlled) is about the player out of control trying to get both major weapons without getting caught.

The narrow corridors and the multiple connected rings allows one to play defensive and run away, which teaches you very important aspects of the game (fleeing, chasing, trapping). The central area is nice for experiencing damaging at item pickups, and the importance of spam as opening to a fight to switch balance ang get control.

Now all this does not really serve you well (besides motivation). What you need is a good chap who takes time with you to show you practical situations. Because in the end you want to see thousands little situations where you know what's best to do, as in game one crucial layer of decisions is taken by that (by already knowing what to do), while the more cognitive thinking does only higher level stuff.
