Allegedly aimbotting, I'm assuming someone sent a demo of my mouse going ballistic on a nutella stain on my mousepad, otherwise I have no idea, because my aim isn't that good, I rarely hit 45ish and mostly hit 30-35% as you already know unless I have time to feel someone out.

EDIT: Also there was a really steep rise in my accuracy around the beginning of 2013 but that was because I moved to the UK and finally got to play sub-120ms.

I don't know who got me banned or anything, it's just weird considering I wouldn't think that there's anything fishy about my sub-standard overall skill and decent mechanical skills.
I started to think that it might've been kevs but for all I know it could've been any random person in an FFA I played.
I can make a vid when I get back to the UK about my mouse going ballistic, but whether that's the real case or not regarding id's reasons for getting me banned is another story.

Won't this turn out like four separate cups rather than a proper quad damage tournament especially now that players don't *have* to participate in all of them if I understood correctly? What restricts the elite of each game to sign up and only play that separate cup?

That is entirely a valid possibility, but I consider it a worthwhile tradeoff given our limited time/manpower for managing the event. Separating it out will simplify the process for those who aren't familiar with the games that they don't usually play.

Two scenarios:

i) We play all four games in one cup. Each player picks a home game, tiebreaker is a coinflip between the remaining two. Players who usually only play one Quake need to have the other three configured ahead of time.

ii) We play one game a week, using that week to allow unfamiliar players to prep that game. Give bonus points each week for repeat players in order to encourage activity in multiple games.

I went with the latter, and yeah, we don't usually run events, so this is a bit of a gamble. I think this was the more manageable solution, however.

QL is mainly a rip-off of cpm ideas, or ideas in the cpma mod, or from the cpma mod team. cpm is not quake.

I'm not against the games per se, but with the exception of CPM, I'd consider it a detriment to force aero on games that aren't really well-suited for it. Warsow took the high road a long time ago and focused on maps that were good for it's mechanics. While it has a map or two that play similar to aero, I admire it's ability to have maps that stand on their own identity.

I don't have such kind things to say about ut (where almost every decent duel map is a quake port) and xonotic (where everything is everything because everything is good all of the time).

Also for another cup the only worthy addition would be CPM, in such sense that there's:

- QW
- Q2
- Q3 CPMA, with the CPM ruleset and physics
- Q4
- QL, with regular QL settings so VQ3 is represented

And in that case hopefully the map used for CPM has different textures than the one in QL, in order to differentiate the games more.

Right, I knew that would crop up :D I decided that CPM and QL would be a little over-redundant in the eyes of newer players, so I skipped out on it for now. It'll have to get it's own event soon.

Now that I have your attention, could you show your quake collection on stream? I'm looking to buy some of the releases and there's very little info out there, so I'd appreciate it :3:3:3

From what I know I think I'll get Quake 1 big box, Quake 2 big box, Q2 Extremities because of the art work, Q3 tin box is on its way, Q4 eventually and that's it. I'm not really interested in the add on missions or anything else, because I haven't played them (no nostalgia).

For instance I have no idea about Quake 4 (lol who bought Q4 for the PC), or about how box sizes relate to each other or their actual measures (I think Extremities didn't have a big box release), or if there was another pack similar to it for Q1 or Q3 (lol @ team arena / QL), etc. etc.

Quake 3 Gold contains Team Arena. Quake 4 Special Edition has making of videos and also contains Quake 2 with all mission packs. Both come in standard DVD cases.

Nice, thanks. Will consider that Q4 Special Edition, since the box resembles the ones from the previous games way more; though on the other hand the green cover of the original release is what everyone associates with Q4.

I considered getting that gold edition of Q3, but as great looking as it is still the tin box one is iconic and is even cooler. Also, team arena sucks balls.

All that means now my only doubt is Q1. Is there another worth getting Q1 release, add on or whatever, besides the big box one? I don't really plan on getting anything outside the main games in their best individual releases for the PC (the big boxes), but since I made the exception for Q2 Extremities maybe for Q1 there's something as cool as that.

This is the plan so far:
- Q1: Big Box (1).
- Q2: Big Box, Extremities (2).
- Q3: Tin box (1).
- Q4: Either the original release (green) or the special edition (because it's bigger) (1)

I'd definitely go for the Q4 Special Edition just for it's additional features. I also like the cover better although it's really dark in person (looks almost holographic).

Quake: The Offering has both mission packs. Never played them so I have no idea if they're worth getting. Dissolution of Eternity has a pretty cool cover art.

As for the timezone, the tournament is stated to begin at 7pm CET, which (if you ask me) is very Europe-friendly, unless there is some mistake on Xfire site.

Standard rules for picking something reasonable will apply. We'll likely define a pool of valid servers in each region that follow the approved ruleset. Usually, it's "if you can agree on one, cool", if not, then using a reasonable middle-ground.

Why QL and Q4? They play so similarly :(. (I asked this same question at Qcon '07)

Honestly, I think there'd be more variety in gameplay if you would have done QW and NetQuake.

QL has no crouch sliding or shooting through teleporters, which I imagine have potential for some interesting tricks on Aerowalk.

QL and Q4 have the same rules for item pickups, resulting in largely the same strategies.

NQ has no speed gain through bunnyhopping, and weapons go away when picked up instead of staying as in QW. The strategies between NQ and QW are vastly difference since weapon denial becomes a major concern in NQ.

NQ (Q1) and QW look the same and despite the big gameplay differences in the end are the same game, so that discards one immediately in this tournament. In this case it has to be NQ because it was surpassed by QW over 15 years ago, that unless you want a NQ-only tournament or something like that.
I mean the differences between QW, Q2, Q3/QL and Q4 are immediately apparent to viewers because of graphics and all of those were indeed distinct game releases of the franchise (QW wasn't on stores and isn't called Quake 2), all of which makes up for a good tournament.

Also, are there any remaining netquake players to begin with? In NA? That play aerowalk? That would sign up to this tournament? Most likely none at all. This might be the biggest concern.

And if NQ is accepted as different game then the whole tournament would verge on the absurd, since that means applying your logic to the other games and those have their NQ to QW's too.
Q2 has one gameplay yes, but if both NQ and QW are accepted then you have to have Q3 OSP (different enough from the rest), Q3 CPM (entirely different ruleset), QL (quite different than Q3 OSP and different maps, though similar enough to Q3 CPMA VQ3 to not include that latter one separately), Q4 1.00 with its huge lg dominance, Q4 with the competition mod Q4 max on that q4 patch id decided to change LG damage and others (those two q4 variants were extensively used in major lans), and finally Q4 on the last patch, that changed movement, fps and many settings (when everyone stopped playing). See? Might as well have one gametype per game and that's it.

I'm really not arguing in favor of NQ, I'm just saying including QL and Q4 is giving a huge advantage to people who play QL more than the others.

Hell, you could be true to Q3/Q4/QL and call it a quad damage tournament but only include 3 games (QW, Q2, and QL) :).

It's just how things are. Too bad the last games are kind of similar, but a "quad damage" tournament must have all four quake games and it's better to only have one gametype (version) of each.

However I wouldn't say that the similarities themselves are much of an advantage though. Despite the weapons being mostly the same still the game plays quite differently, with different movement, maps, balance, etc., to the point that q4 was dominated by someone that results wise wasn't even a top64 player in q3. On the surface Q4 looks like Q3, but the single player and balance are highly influenced by Q2 (probably the reasons why some Q2 players switched to Q4, myself included), plus adding buttsliding and more LG dominance (QW-ish) (and adding those awful thin models, locked at 60 fps, awful hitboxes at the beginning and so on).

The thing is it so happens that the best Q3 players also played an awful lot of Q4, unlike QW and Q2 duel players that rather stick to their own game only, which is their fault for being less versatile and mainly for sticking to games that are unlike anything else right now. If they played both QW and Q2, just like Q3 and Q4 players did, then all players in the tournament would be in the same position, but QW and Q2 players don't.

That's what's great about this tournament actually: the player that will win it is the most skilled player that is open minded enough to play all four quakes. It won't be the QW only guy, or Q3/QL only, because with one game you earn not enough points to win the whole thing and the respective QW game will be won by the QW-only guy. To win you are forced to play all of them.

The same happened at the quad damage tournament at quakecon a million years ago. Despite entirely focusing on q3 and q4, fox was so versatile that he actually beat purri (the q2 legend) on q2, a game he hadn't played in years let alone at the competitive level of the time. Dahang (another q2 legend) lost on semis too back when he wasn't a q3 pro, to tox.
The problem was not the q3 and q4 games similarities but that purri and dahang only played q2 and q4, while there weren't as good in q3 and didn't play qw at all. On the other hand tox played q3 and q4, q4 better than those two (so 2>1 in mastered games), and fox played everything well (at least 2>1). Of course those two latter players got to the finals, because they played more games and played them better than the others.


In any case I think that for this tournament I prefer to have just the four quakes (with QW instead of QW) and that's it, for simplicity's sake like it should be.

Then for future tournaments in order to fix that advantage (that exists for what I say or for what you say or whatever reason) the solution is not to include two Quake1's. I know the gameplay differences between NQ and QW are big, but still that solution is way more unfair than having both QL and Q4, because after all those two are indeed different games so the difference is bigger.

The solutions for future tournaments are either:
1.- Leaving the four games with one gametype in each as is, stop crying, or
2.- Having one more game that's reasonably different than the rest, so the advantage is reduced and prevents potential really unfair tie breakers (the said quad damage tournament was won by tox because they were tied 2-2 and the tie breaker game was q4). The only possible choice is CPM, making it 5 games.
3.- Or embracing the mess that is featuring tons of gametypes in each game, ending in a quake dodecathlon with three events in each looking the same to viewers.

Well written and explained, but I have to disagree on one thing. Dahang was never a Q2 legend, he was an avarage player who manage to beat purri once of trillion times at Qcon. I played a lot as HPB on us server and I won every single american even dahang.

Q2 legdnds are tresh, scooby, purri, provi, damiah, zyz <- those are true q2 legends and players who won multiple tournaments while dahang didnt won a single tournament except beating purri once which was very often in europe by many players including me

PS: The jehar decision of QD tournamnet is very good. Lets be only QL without cpm and Q3.

I don't disagree that there are significant differences. Not including them in this particular setup does not equate to denying that they deserve consideration and attention. Not everything will fit into this event - there's more than enough reason to focus on these titles in a different event.

If we could drum up some players for a NQ tourney, I'd be happy to cover it.

In reality, we shouldn't have to be running these at all. In years past, we had to pick and choose which events to cover in a given weekend. Now that events are less active than before, we have to fill the gaps. However, I'd still prefer to see some of these communities self-start and organize something, which we'd then cover.

I think this is a great idea and thank you for hosting such a tournament. I personally thought that I will never see something like this again.

I propose that for the next QuadDamage Tournament, you use "The Edge" as the main map :P

He more or less skipped Q2 IIRC, and he didn't really participate in Q4 though he shouldn't really be bad at it.
Also, I have no idea of his level in QW he was a top player before, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he's still up there.

I'm not sure what are the rules with picking servers are. I noticed so far that more EU players signed up, so that potentially limits how many games I could actually play potentially. Playing QL and Q4 as hpb is not feasible, nor would it be fun.

Also, have you decided what you are going to do about timer usage in Q2? I think it would be nice to ban them considering that it's the standard not to use timers in all of the other Quake games. Also, it would be sad to see a new player potentially lose because they didn't use a timer.

However, it's probably easier just to allow them because enforcing a ban on timers would be quite hard to do. The far majority of servers allow timers, so unless you force people to play on a neutral server where the playwav file command is disabled, then you cannot do anything to stop people from using them. I don't know what servers that timers don't work on anymore, if they are still even around, but they definitely weren't European ones.

If you do end up allowing them, then perhaps you might want to create a pak with ones that people can use. The only way you can get them atm is if you gut them out of someone's pak.
