these mice are so overrated, but most ppl realized they only used them because there were so so few other good non-shit consumer-garbage options in the era they came from. Their shapes/ergonomics and relative quality and performance are nothin compared to the gen prior. And now theres others that look like theyve (and their only passable performance) finally been surpassed.

Relative quality? 3 WMOs I used, sold after 5 years, MS 3.0 sold after 4 years, other one after 7(!) years, IMO 1.1a sold after 9(!) years - in perfect working condition. I just wish that newer mice would have this quality.

Shape / ergonomics - one of the best (though this is pretty subjective). Many other mice copies it until this very day.

Sensor is STMicroelectronics MLT04, ~400 cpi.
Perfect control on 125 Hz is 1 m/s, but because it has 8 bit data path, raising the polling rate to 500 Hz will raise the perfect control up to 1,5 m/s, which is perfectly fine for medium sens / medium-sens + accel / relative low sens / low-sens + accel (and acceptable for high sens / high sens + accel on lower resolutions - though it's better to have 800 cpi for that).
Works virtually on any surface.
No angle snapping. Earlier models' DSP has 6400 FPS, later models has 9000(!) FPS and this, combined with the beforementioned attributes resulting in one of the purest sensor-feel, even in 2015.

Optical mice have less moving parts to break. They all will last long on avg regardless. But of course, again, its just that none of the other mouses from this timeframe were worth keepin around. Your precious WMO isnt the only thing that lasted 5 years. Plenty of people i know with cheap optical mice or ones uve never seen before that have lasted them just the same. And even an old top quality ball mouse wil still last almost as long anyway.

Many mice "copy it to this very day" - because its overrated and the copiers see a market. Still, the new, better 'copies' - actualy have more of the older mice than the wmo etc, and are prolly superior.

the mice fuckin suck. the sensors were achievements for its time, but all the shapes are seriously sub par. The real great mice are the logitech first mouse+/pilot (original), the original m$ intellimouse, the wingman, etc. These are some of the true best mice ever, with superior shapes/ergonomics and detail+build quality (know what indentations are? or have u been using the wmo too long).

The sensor stuff u mention are jus preferences of a community that knows requirements for a mouse. Just becuz prediction/angle snappin ended up existin in one form or another in other mice (intended as a feature by its engineers, obviously - not an inherent flaw, or sign of bad 'quality'), doesnt make these without it good mice. It has no indication of craftsmanship, because prediction is a design decision and many (idiots) will prefer it. Its not in the m$ simply by coincidence, not by some achievement of the sensor. It just goes back to the same fuckin fact that there was a complete lack of good mice.

But also had 15 other gaming-grade mice (not noname laser shitlol x-mas trees), some of them multiple times - and tried like a dozen more in the last ~20 years.

Yeah, Wingman and the old ball Intelli were great mice (FOR A BALL MOUSE), but comparing them to a decent optical sensor (which the STMicrolectronics MLT04 IS) performance-wise is a joke.

About ergonomics; I would NEVER EVER use and pay for big and bulky mice anymore, no matter how awesome the sensor or the build quality is - or how cheap the mouse is. Because they are simply uncomfortable for me to use, especially for longer periods of time, no matter what shape they have. My grip is claw-fingertip hybrid, using low-sens + accel flicky mouse handling with average / a bit above average hand-size, playing from wrist.
My friend (ex CS-pro in a national level) is roughly the same in the preferences-department, just with pure claw grip and uberlow sens, without accel and he goes up to ~95 g considering mouse weight - which is a bit too much for me already.
My other friend would never use symmetrical, small, lightweight (~70 g), 3 button mice (which I absolutely prefer over anything else), only right-handed, at least 5 button mice, which are at least 100-110 g of weight. He's a palm gripper, uses his wrist and high sens.
3rd friend is the same as the 2nd, just he's using whole arm / shoulders and low sens, without accel.
4th friend also prefers big, right-handed mice, he uses palm grip too, with wrist and medium sens and loves 130+ g brick mice (for example Logi G5, fully loaded with weights, rofl - how horrendous is that).

And so on. As simple as that. Ergonomics are completely subjective.
This is why it's ridiculous when someone ask for exact recommendations for a shape / weight - everybody has his / her own preferences, everybody should decide what weight and shape fits him / her the best. Because no other will know for sure - others can only lay down basic guidelines (and nothing more) from their experiences.


I'm a mouse (and mousepad) hobbyist (and one of the leading mouse experts at my country's biggest IT site - so sometimes I buy things only for the sake of test purposes or sometimes I get units for free from dedicated forum members, sometimes to test only, sometimes to keep it for good).
