I would doubt anyone has the same reasons as me....
But in short there are 2:
1) the shift towards more and more aim has imho lead to a game which is not quake anymore. (as a result of all the changes that happened up till 2013, both to the game as to general playstyles)

2) I don't have enough time to get to / maintain my old level of play.
And it is very frustrating to know how to beat players but simply be unable to because of 'lack of shape' (aim suffers a bit, which back in the old day wasn't a problem... now it is).

It's strange how often I am accused of wanting things that I don't want.

Certainly this is a natural progression, as conditions for hitting simply get better. I personally do think aim SHOULD be very important in a first person shooter.
The old balance is lost, but I think it can be a 'smart' game/genre once again, by perhaps re-designing the whole weapon system.

I would say it still is a game that requires a lot of thinking though, at least compared to many other shooters out there.

when would you say is the last time where brain mattered at least as much as brawl? The Quake4 era?

Q4 might've been more about individual skill than QL is today.

I think that early QL (2009 - 2011) or so was about the time that brain still mattered more.
But it is hard to really judge... I mean all of the current good players have a good 'brain game'. Especially compared to other shooters.
But it doesn't seem to be as decisive as it used to be.

However if you read my thoughts about the game changes stuff, you can see that whatever happens to a game there will be some balance found due to the nature of duel.
And "smart players / players with better understanding of the game mechanics" will always find some way to obtain an advantage over others.
So it is very complicated and very nuanced as to why which change works some way and how it would "increase / reduce brain games".
As well as which option might be "best" is heavily opinion based.

I never really enjoyed the CPM playstyle, but others do. Just like I didn't really enjoy Painkiller all that much (although I did have a bit of fun at some lans with it within the netherlands).
I seem to also not enjoy the current QL playstyle all that much anymore, while I did feel much more freedom for playstyles in Q3.
To me it feels like QL is trying to pressure me to go aggressive based on LG angles on opponents.... Which is not how I want to play :p

If there ever is a quake 5, I hope to god Sync, Sponge, and whoever else is responsible for qlive never gets to touch it. At this point I'd be more optimistic if they had another company do it.

I'm loving trying all the new games, but QL still feels like the default game to go back to.

Right now I play Wickland and Reflex quite a bit but when nobody is playing or I'm waiting for updates I default back to QL (though I havent played it in a while).

I love the game. But too many cheaters take the sport out of it. I gave it up as my new years resolutions.. It was really starting to bring me down, make me mad, get me furious... bad for blood pressure.

Bottom line.. I wasn't having fun anymore and that's when I stop playing.

playing reflex now but quake was fun in 2009. it is old game at moment. too many problems and changes. not same game anymore. all my friends quit game too years ago. is sad but is 6 year old game. developers are noobs. id is dead company

Still a good game. Regardless of the bad, i still enjoy it from time to time. I still prefer quake 2 and quake world. The netcode was better. Never truly got into Quake 3 till mods like threewave, osp and cpm came out. Plus the community at q3 was as rotten as it is in QL. Just a bunch of punks who don't appreciate ctf with a grapple hook and runes, don't appreciate anything outside of rocket arena. Now all we have is fools who never even touched the earlier games.

And for the record, Q3 was crap by itself without mods. Pure shite. A sure sign that id software was done. Now we have QL as evidence. The pros are that the instagib netcode was shoved into every gamemode. The con is that instagib netcode is really just shit, and weird has the best explaination. The other con is the mods (that made q3 good) were all half-assed. It doesn't even feel like the same game in that respect.

On the other hand i still enjoy playing QW, Q2, and reflex much more than QL.

The game won't die until all of us do. I definitely respect anyone who would quit at this point. No point in hanging around if the game doesn't bring you any joy. I don't play near as often for obvious reasons... nothing new happening and the devs wont' let the community touch the precious. Pretty stupid since the community kept the game alive from the start with adding their own ideas in.

Edit: At least q3 still has proper fuckin deathmatch. Jesus christ wtf were they thinking???

i wish i could still play it but im on linux, and they dropped the support. sure people tell me to dualboot and whatnot but what the heck, ive gotten way to lazy for that. so i just cancelled my pro subscription at one point and stopped playing entirely, even tho i still love the game and would like to play it.
if its the only way to show my disapprovement, then so be it :) doesnt matter to me if i dont make a difference and what others think, for me my move matters.

I couldn't help but check your location. You're in North American I see. Do you like cups? How about duel? The main site is a mess currently (to put it very nicely) but regardless of the .com the stream happens regularly and the cups are monthly.
Oh you don't like duel you say? No problem! I will be holding events for TDM and CA soon. Frequency will depend upon reception. I should mention the prize pool for these will be 100% donation based unlike the NA Duel Cup, but I know most players want the competition, and they don't care about the prizes. That said there will be $5 one map duel days and $5 Classic FFA days starting February.

playing SP, on space chamber, you have (IIRC) 4 opponents. Same for chemical reaction. Most maps you play vs 2-3 bots, some maps are 1v1.

Playing MP, sure you get the occasional server with 8 people, and i believe you if you say that 16/16 existed, but most of the time it was four or five guys playing FFA.

This gives you the choice to hide and go look for powerups, or follow the sounds and join the battle.


and everyone complains how the new patch has RUINED 8 and 16 man FFA, which is a fucked up gamemode and was nothing better than spam anyway.

why didnt id put 7 bots with you in those maps? why didn't they put 7 bots in hells gate, i mean, why not put a whole 15 bots with you in hells gate.

go back 5 years. look at the FFA games played with one, two, maybe three good players and the rest are noobs. the top players will share wins randomly, the noobs never win.

same players, playing Duel, would have one of them dominating, depending on skill and form. Always winning. In FFA its just random, and the people who claim this is due to "control" is because their skill level is 10x everyone else's. You are either raping noobs or throwing a coin as to who wins, because its a spamfest.

1. Fucked up duel by not being able to callvote a map that you would want as a non-premium.
2. Fucked up FFA with the weapon layout. DEAR GOD WHY.
3. Changing the announcer voice.
4. Killed qlprism and made some lame ass copy.
5. The possible migration to the Steam network, which could mean the end of qlranks.

The good:
1. Allowing the community to submit new maps for inclusion in the game.
2. Devs hangout on IRC and are accessible.
3. Account linking to your steam account.
