setting it to "auto" kinda aims for you

auto uses the desktop rate as far as i know

so is the point of this feature for people who want to run quake at a lower refresh rate than they have on their desktop? ._.

Most monitors do higher refresh rates on lower, non native reolutions. My crt goes from 60@1280x1024 to 120@640x480 and my second lcd screen can do 75hz up to 1280x720, 60hz on anything above that. But with my new screen i can just leave it on auto cuz it does 144hz on native res.

When I used my CRT, even when I had it set to 800x600@120 it would restore to 1024x768@60 when I left this along with r_mode at auto.

well, i use 60hz for windows and most games i play, having set r_displayrefresh to 144 it sets 144hz when i launch QL (only in full screen, windowed stays at 60)

why not just use 144hz alltimes?

i have broken/faulty gpu, my card melts at 144hz on many games (not in ql) + some issues watching youtube/twitch at 144hz.

time for a new gpu

120Hz is usually a better rate for desktop use. Most content viewed at the desktop display mode is not 24Hz, 30Hz, or 60Hz, all even multiples of 120Hz making for a nice consistent frame cadence. Unless you just really like the extra, barely-perceivable responsiveness 144Hz offers over 120Hz, 120Hz is the better option.

And if you use 144hz your GPU won't fully downclock on idle. At least with nvidia.
