Technical issues have nothing to do with QL popularity. When LoL was launched it was so bugged, we couldn't start match for hours, and look at it now - most popular online game in the world.

Quake is dead for a lot of reasons, one of the most important of them is that it requires shit tons of skill to comfortably play. And even then you are usually very tense, since the game requires your full focus every second of the match. It's not tanks where everything is so slow even sloths can play it. It's high paced, very config-perfection and aim demanding, very positional and most importantly - it punishes for any issues with those skills tremendously.

There's no good educational way to start playing QL, and there're no servers with players of your skill at your are if you are not a veteran. To make it worse, most of players veteran are pretty arogant - they kick and ban inferior players with no words and explanations, never try to help them and after that hope that QL will be filled with fresh blood to make a huge user base which will lead with high pro-gaming fee for them.

So, players can install tanks or DoTA 2 and play it with their friends at Friday evening drinking beer. It is not demanding and they always can find competition of their skill level (including other lazy players with beer). So , community grows, and where there's a community, there are money for tournaments and pro-gaming.

QL on the other hand has absolutely no room for beginners or generally not top-skilled in their region players. If developers could manage enough free public servers with enough low skilled players, then the fresh blood would start coming into game, because game actually looks pretty stylish and beautiful and just by watching it you can understand how perfected and polished it is.

But the problem is - there are not enough players for beginners to play with and there's no way to play duels on adequate maps without buying Premium. Yes, the public servers that are always up have a very crappy map pool, you can't vote for maps there and there are very few of them. I don't know why ID does it this way, it's a very bad strategy for the game.

bs mate. dunno what polish law actually says, but its not 1 year prision time. i got caught on bike with 0,51(a crime) promille and the concequences was either fine(1000zl) or public service. in the end my policeman mate influenced some guys in the prosecution and i got public service in pending :D

People like avek dont get raped in german prisons and i highly doubt he will get raped in polish prison.
But that's besides the point really. I like avek a lot too, i played a lot of cs with him lately and he is really nice and funny guy. But if it is true that he was dealing drugs, while im very sad he was so stupid to do it, i dont share the sentiment of gienon that he shouldnt be jailed for it. From what I can gather from the article its not backyard weed dealing, but organized crime circle...

edit: I just saw article at bottom that says that guns and most drugs were found in the apartment of some 39-year old dude. I misunderstood the article in op, it sounded to me like they were all busted together... Considering that I take back what I said, avek is probably gonna get fucked with way too hard punishment :/

edit: Don't pretend like they are selling the drugs for the greater good of society. They are deliberately and systematically committing crimes in order to make money. We could have a different discussion if they were giving the drugs away for free (and e.g. to people who need marijuana as medication).

The idea of "regulation" is a somewhat nebulous concept. There are many examples of third party verification/certification of products/services aside from government regulations. The highest automobile safety standards, for example, come form the IIHS, a private organization. 'Organic food' is certified by private entities. A civil court system can also provide 'regulation' without the need for prescriptive bureaucracy. Someone sells asbestos as food, you sue them out of business.

Just so we're on the same page, have you now redirected your complaints from poisonous substances to addictive ones? So poisonous and not addictive ones do not warrant caging someone after all? Well, even if so, you might have to rethink your stance on bagels - perhaps those merciless bakers deserve being enslaved if there are more studies confirming such a hypothesis.

Also, there remains a question to what extent drugs' addictiveness is attributable to the substance itself and how much are the additives being put deliberately in it responsible for. IF it's predominantly the latter, the major driver of addictiveness is prohibition itself. I haven't researched it but you clearly should, since you seem to have such strong opinions about addictiveness being the main reason for criminalizing drugs.

I have a couple of school buddies convicted in separate drug trials. Both of them were first time offenders. One of them was caught with 150 grams of marijuana and a digital scale and he decided not to snitch on his supplier. He got a year in prison. The other guy was caught with 100 grams of meth and he snitched and got 3 years of probation. You dont snitch to cops, you snitch to prosecution which in turn asks for a more mild sentence for you. It all comes down to the value of information you have and your attorneys negotiations skills. Also its easy giving the "stand your ground" kind of advice when you're not facing a decade in prison.

Alcohol kills hundreds of thousands directly or indirectly in every country every year. it's one of the worst drugs, so I can have an educated opinion without knowing the details.

the argument that drugs are bad because they are not pure is in fact a counter-argument against prohibition.

society in many cases such as this does not determine what's bullshit and what's not: the whole prohibition stems from finantial interests from pharmaceutical companies, not from votes or educated public opinion
there is a majority for legalizing soft drugs, ie. natural plants, but still prohibition stays.

Harmless, harmful, that's a matter of definition. Water can be poisonous, anything too much is unhealthy..

I think prohibition makes no sense, only education and help/supervision does. Society as a whole and for an individual would profit from a open eyed stance on drugs, without any prohibition.

Where we seem to differ is your perception some or any society chooses the prohibition of substances in broad agreement or by 'logic'. I disagree if that was your point.
Cannabis, alcohol, cocaine prohibition showed us the reasons are not to protect a person from oneself, a ridicolous concept if you think about it. Also for countries which pretend to aim for a maximum amount of freedom for the individual, this is quite the opposite.

No I think any society was manipulated into agreeing, or simply not opposing those laws. Like today with so many environmental laws, ownership laws, patent laws etc. pp. (most of them make no sense and act against the common good but big companies profit from them).

Another reason for prohibition is added control and aligned thinking (or the lack of), but now this would go way too far...

In the case of pot, society has already figured out prohibition was wrongheaded. The notion that laws that don't even have the support of a simple majority can be on the books is pretty ridiculous. At least the original alcohol prohibition in the U.S. was implemented with a constitutional amendment, making it slightly closer to a consensus decision... Marijuana prohibition continues despite the fact that only a minority still want it illegal.

I don't agree with you on your view that what they're doing is irresponsible and immoral. In the end, there is and has always been a big demand for these substances, which doesn't just dissapear by making them illegal. People can research and decide for themselves what they put in their bodies. Making the substances illegal (which also causes the drugs to sometimes be of dangerous quality) instead of providing proper education on the risks of using the substances is what causes most of the problems surrounding drugs.

Having said that, if this is indeed Av3k, I'm sad to know he's going to end up in jail :(

But do remember, since darknet market has popped up and pretty much anyone can start dealing, people will only go to the guy with the best reputation, as soon as something goes wrong. Starting to give poor quality or something harmful that is not the drug. Even selling wrong drug(nBome instead of LSD) No one will buy from them and all they worked for. They do actually have to work hard to prove themselves to be a valid dealer. All that will be gone and have to start from the bottom again.

Street dealers are different though, also why I think darknet market is a good thing. There's no Hells Angels there to scare any competitors off, since they would have no clue on how to find these internet dealers. So people have to sell the best possible quality they can to earn money, or else people will just go to the competitor.

Reputation is everything.

Sure, there's actually something like that happening with a legal drug atm. Killing teenagers. When some of the hardcore druggies are warning people about it, you know it's quite bad. The problem with that drug is that there's 7 different sorts of it with the same name, the original one that became illegal was actually pretty safe.

Then some heavier "more potent" stuff came into the market and people started dying left to right. Spice is the name(I think).

In another semi-legal market (nootropics) they've started doing something really good, they have a 3rd party testing different internet stores for bad stuff and good randomly. Some have been busted and gone bankrupt after it.

All supermarkets do is put products on the shelves it's not up to them to guarantee that packed meat from XY is not infused with bacteria and what not, that's the job of the XY manufaturer and they undergo regular testing.

And yes from time to time they catch a bad seed and they are fined or even trialed if the cases are severe.

Just the other month a pate manufacturer had to withdraw the full month of pate produce, because they found pork in a chicken only pate, which is against regulations, naturally.

Next to them losing about tons of money on that, they probably got fined and possibly sued.

Well it's not that simple either. A lot of growers and the like don't want legalization because it means government involvement on how they run things and let's be real here, not many people go into the drug business so the government can tell them what to do. In part, they have a valid concern. Remember that law the dutch government tried to pass (don't know if what actually happened to that in the end) to ban weed with more than 15% THC, not only was that law flawed because it would've been impossible to enforce (considering THC testing isn't that accurate) but it could cause a recriminalization of strong strains.The only justification for that law was (excuse me for saying it in dutch): "Het is troep."

Now don't get me wrong, personally, I actually believe dutch weed has become way too strong (I only smoke hashish these days), but these kinds of misinformed measures will only serve to aggravate the problem, rather than solve it.

tl;dr: legalization is a double-edged sword

The argument is/was rather simple: Effort doesn't determine income. With all things equal, yes greater effort will lead to greater income, but it's not the prevailing factor. You say "work hard", I say "work smart". I'm not sure why you think selling drugs is any different than other sales jobs, nor can I see much difference between a small scale drug production operation and other types of small scale manufacturing. The irony is that if drugs were legalized, as they should be, the small scale producers/sellers wouldn't be in business, due to inherent economies of scale. Risk/hazard is another factor in compensation, and since drugs are illegal, the risk/reward is relatively high.

Due to lack of competition anyone can do it and there is nothing else so profitable that anyone can do. I know a few people that deal or used to deal and none except one of em have the mental capacity to do anything other than a minimum wage drone job while none of em have the work ethic to work any normal job. Dealing drugs takes no skill and no sweat. pretty much all people i know, that arent drug dealers, would be better at dealing than the dealers i know, they are just not stupid enough to take that risk

You are trying to convince us that because he was a great Quake player, we should support his criminal antics, if not support at least look past them.

And lets not forget, drug addicts and their enablers are the worst kind of persons, they rob, rape, kill all for a quick fix or profit. I wish you'd never experience that, but if you get robbed by a druggie, remember that he was robbing you so that he could buy another round from his favourite drug dealer - it's a circle you know, a vicious one.

And while drug addicts are just stupid and their actions mostly driven by addition, drug dealers are calculated criminals and their actions driven by profit and with that said, should be treated as such, and if they get caught I applaud to the police and don't feel any sympathy for them at all.

Only that 10-15 years prison, the same sentence as manslaughter, is exrtremely harsh for what he seemingly actually did, selling WEED (as someone in this thread now stated, the other drugs were probably even only by associacion)

Regarding kids, you are a bad parent if your kids buy and use drugs. Period. Don't shift the blame please, no dealer forces anyone to buy drugs.
Your kids are more likely endangered by traffic, sexual predators, poisonous food, accidents etc. life is dangerous.

But if drugs were legalized, there would be many posibilities to better prevent kids from getting drugs. Also to educate the society without the scare lies. Same as it is with alcohol. Not to mention dealers would almost cease to exist as the high (no pun intnded) profit margin would be gone.

Do not mix up junkies with recreational drug use. Funnily enough I was robbed by a junkie once. He was going to steal my bike but I could avoid it.
If drugs weren't illegal, he could seek or even get offered or, in tough cases forced upon the help he needs. But prohibition makes that very hard.

Some drug dealers are calculated criminals, some (like the weed dealer that makes some money on the side but hardly enough to even have a decent lifestyle) are not. Life is not black and white no matter how hard you try to convince yourself.

The reason av3k and friends got caught is bc theyre small fishes. The big ones arent caught, are in bed with police, and do massive $$$. Prohibition doesnt fix the problems, it makes it worse. Because prohibited items become more valuable, and so it becomes a better biz option. Also prohibition means drugs arent tested/regulated, so consumers end doing themselves more harm than they should.

if he really is involved, which, as I see it, is not entirely confirmed, AND considering that he might read through ESR-entries/threads (which I think he said once): seeing these kinds of pictures might just strengthen the negativity that has already gotten hold of him.

So he's been dealing drugs since at least 2012.

Other than that, his only other activities were "going to the gym" and "education". Seeing that he didn't specify what kind of education he's getting, it is a rather safe bet that he isn't actually getting a meaningful one.

In conclusion, it's very likely that he has been making a living solely out of drug dealing for the last 4-5 years. What a terrible life decision which will now take its toll. :(

that is a gross simplification.

there are bad people in every part of society. there are also good responsible dealers. as one example, there are priests who destoy youngsters. Religion should be prohibited...?
should fps games be prohibited and the dealers persecuted because of the school shootings?
good luck following through with that logic. it is not reasonable to put blame on a whole group because of the misdoings of a few.

what is criminalized and taboo cannot be controlled or handled properly. that is what we see from those documentaries you mention.

Also you indirectly compare dealers of heroin and really killer drugs with dealers of marijuana, amphetamine and ecstacy here.
there is not only black and white...

on some side notes,
the reasons for substance abuse in the sense of the word are plentifold. these documentaries you mention are truly a sad case, but youth gets on the wrong path in many ways, the availability of drugs is not a cause, but a symptom of the prohibition.
If the more harmless substances were not illegal, but obtainable for responsible adults, the dealing marked would not not exist like it does and younsters would a not get anything as easily

You have good points. I think most people agree that prohibition is a problematic and short-sighted way of handling drugs that are popular and relatively harmless. This is off-topic, though, isn't it?

Dealers aren't spearheading a public campaign against prohibition. They are merely criminals, selling illegal drugs to anyone who wants them.

If they were giving away marijuana for free to people who are in chronic pain as a sign of public protest? I'd be totally cool with that and I'd be sad to see them go to prison.

But, that's not what they do. They are de facto full-time criminals. They deserve to be punished by law.

edit: Does the law need to be changed? I think so. However, keep in mind that these guys are actually taking advantage of the current law. If the drugs weren't illegal, they wouldn't be able to make that much money selling them. They are willfully exploiting the drugs' illegality for their profits by committing crimes. It's a risk-reward scenario they obviously found attractive. Now they have to face the consequences.

Reading this thread made me wonder about some of the people posting here. Av3k had so many "friends" on this board.
I'm not saying that he is not responsible (or his parents, RL friend, etc), but still, his life is probably permanently ruined, and true friends do not let things like that happen to each other.
He spent his entire youth playing quake among us, and if that really means nothing, then idk what does. Something really went bad there, and none of us saw it coming, not even the "smart" ones who are used to know everybody and everything around here.

I don't know what happened, so I can't judge atm if he deserves punishment or not, but (if all this is true) it really saddens me that the Quake community lost such a great talent. He was one of the bests.

No one could really know, not like he would go around talking about it openly, then when he got the question it often sounded quite normal, studying and gym. I mean, it can also depend on the guys you hang out with.

I can easily see how my life could've been different now if I kept hanging out with some particular kind of people when I was younger. Let's not forget that, that it can be quite tempting for many people if they have a nearby friend that always shows up in his fancy car, clothes going on vacation when he feels like it and so on and so on.

Easy to hide identities.If the people who you're talking to give you simple answers like "studying, gym, hanging out" that's bullshit. There's more to it than that. Life has a huge story and it's never simple answers. They go by the assumption that the other people who talk casually to them do not care what they are really up to. That's why there are many suspected criminals among the quakelive community. There are number of people with criminal history that i don't want to bring up. Even rapha seems like a criminal, a thug.

2GD made drug jokes 24/7 as a caster, it's kind of his thing. On the other side there was a polish kid we knew at a good 100lbs that was now a roided monster. couple that with the typical racist undertones about criminality in poland and it's obvious that 2GD and fazz were joking.

I think this has little to do with friendship and awareness. There was a real problem to solve if you wanted to help him: offer/find him a job, help him move out of his city/country.

To be honest it's not easy at all. I've been in contact with him multiple times in the past three years, and a recurring topic was he coming to Switzerland. I was ready to host him at my place, at one point the trip was planned but he had to cancel last minute. We discussed it again, but what was putting everyone off was the difficulty he would have had once arrived here. I had contacts in construction through family, but none of the people I talked to was very supportive. In general this is a country where many people want (and vote) to avoid exactly this kind situation.

So, more than people not caring, it's simply that it's not simple. There also the part where he made a number of wrong choices, and yes, a bit of guilt/sadness, because months passed between efforts.

All started in their teenage years and all took decisions along the way. He didn't remain 14 for ten years.

In the same or similar position as the other pros that Avek is the only quake pro that took that route, while all the others did not.

Mind you he earned a ton for his age in his teenage years and in his early twenties, so poverty is not an excuse at all. It isn't either a so called lack of opportunities, for example read memento's post.

In the end Avek is 24 years old, period. He has full control of his actions , understands the concept of consequences and that what he is doing is morally and legally wrong.

It is absolutely disgusting that people are actually defending drug dealing and making it appear like it is no big deal.

Poisoning and killing people is a big deal. You stop poison from supply.

The people who use drugs are weak and destroying themselves. No matter how it is managed, it is mercy for them to make it more difficult for them to acquire it.

Selling chemicals that alter your brain functions is just as retarded as using it. But people are illogical failures who will use something that hinders their machine instead of enhancing it.

From a pure logical perspective, drugs are full retard.

Now onto my next point. Allot of people here are weak and have a twisted perspective of morals. And it is these people who fall into bullshit like selling drugs and crime.

Society has rotten because of easy punishments and decline of morality.

Anything to do with poison deserves harsh punishment. GMO, nature destruction, consistent food poison (mc), drugs anything of this sort should be dealt with swiftly.

In conclusion, no empathy for criminals.

First lets get one thing straight, Av3k was once of my fav players to watch in Quake.

As far as my criticizing is not for Av3k per se, but my disappointment of people in here and their perception or lack of the seriousness of drugs.

Personally as I stated above, drugs that harm your machine in any way are completely illogical to me.

That is why I don't drink, eat McDonalds, do drugs, smoke etc.

I try to live a healthy lifestyle to keep my mind fresh but also to conquer stupid decisions. A war against yourself against stupid decisions is the first step to success.

Now as far as poison being sold everywhere, that doesn't make it ok.

Everything that kills and poisons you is "natural". Cyanide is natural, it doesn't come from space.

The distinction that needs to be made is that everything that science can prove that harms you is poison and should be regulated. (Mercy for the weak who are not making sound decisions)

That is why ideally gmo, mcdonalds, alcohol should be banned imo. (There is a reason allot of the rich elites have organic gardens and do not eat the food the majority are eating)

But then again if you want to be a loser and a sheep and poison yourself and destroy your life when you have great potential (av3k), then go ahead, you will find a way.

And to your last point, believe it or not I actually do not have an account in this site even though I have been following it past few years. I only make my appearance here and there on controversial threads.

You can't stop people from making bad decisions, but what is fair is to inform everyone of what is going on.

There is a reason lately McDonalds is starting to go under. People have gained knowledge about it and food in general and are trying to make better choices.

As far as central planning goes, there will always be people who will try to push what they think its right if they have the power to do it. Just as the same as others would like to bent laws to coincide with their desires.

So you will always have a clash as long as we differ in our values and perception of what we deem is right and wrong.

The only variable in this equation is who has the power to impose his will. So like it or not you will tread on someone or someone will tread on you.

As far as a person goes, Av3k was very likeable. And I was actually sad last night when I got this news. Sad because of the bad decisions he made and the consequences he will suffer because of it.

It really sucks that he went down this path, because it is a destructive path.

The reason why I went with the poison rant is because of the problem we are facing now as a society. Majority of people now are becoming failures who are indulging in drugs. It is my strong opinion good decisions come from educating not regulating.
Prohibition creates much more problems then it solves. Drugs or things announced illegal for possession will still be sold even with ridiculously high sentences, they even amplify the problem because it makes it more profitable to sell. poland is the best example.

Regarding a bad path, it surely is portrayed that way in mainstream media. The scapegoat 'drugs' is all set up and ready to be pulled out of the drawer at any time it is convenient

Think of the fifties to seventies, when cocaine, weed, lsd was not regulated. Society did not go downhill or degrade then,, It will not today.
But prohibition with over the top sentences generates an underground marked mainly run by real criminals out for pure profit. this is a recipe for desaster.
The "war on drugs" might make people believe there is a devil, named drugs to blame for many misbehaviors. But let's be real drug 'abuse' is a symptom of problems within a society, and even the psyche.. Recreational use of softer drugs on the other hand is just that, a pasttime to make our life more enjoyable. Life is dangerous, at the end we all die.
With this in mind I think no state should dictate what you can and cannot consume. But they should of course put the tax money to better use and educate and help not to use the dangerous stuff (and free the others)

There are also many lies and myths circulating, often stirred by governments themselfes. There was a time when children were told weed makes you blind, impotent, a criminal and addicted at first try (and probably much more bs)

One last thing about addictive behavior: humans are programmed for addiction. All pleasure is addictive, in any forms. Knowing this it does not make much sense to single out some substances when the real issue is our bodies and as you said the way we chose to treat it.

this is going to sound extremely biased, like nothing is on him, especially to all those sanctimonious, high horse riders, but I think this has been written enough, av3k has made a mistake and will be punished, I don't have any qualms with that.

now, I'll still throw out what's on my mind. because that's what internet is made for nowadays and I feel some points could be discussed further.

just "knowing" av3k through interviews and lan events, you know he wouldn't get caught in anything too nasty. that's the guy retiring live, apologizing because he disappointed the people supporting him. yeah I'm sure he'd willingly start selling meth to pregnant women... do you feel it adds up to what we've seen from him for years ?

he probably sold weed on a small scale because there's not much else he can do (does anybody know if he's gone further than high school ? not that it guarantees anything, but memento could "only" get him a job in construction, for example).

and to all those people pointing to other players who have a normal life : what would tox be doing without his family business ? what's spartie's job ? and killsen's ? what's rapha doing ? and these guys are in western europe/N.A, not poland. fazz and ddk dropped out of university and have been doing fine but you can't expect a 100% success rate. sure, fox and czm are at the other end of that specter, but winning dreamhack isn't worth a year salary in their country either.

maybe that puts some of cooller's interviews in perspective "e-sport bullshit" "I wouldn't let my kid play competitively" and that's coming from a guy who is doing well.

e-sport right now reminds me a bit of the first rambo movie :

a very unique skillset, you're undoubtedly smart but how does it translate ? what do you say during your job interview ? that you can time 3 items, keep tabs on your opponent's movements, stacks and weapons ? what does that land you ? a job as a waiter ? there's nothing at the end of that tunnel. I think only 2gd, strenx with his internship, stermy with his business ventures and ddk got something out of being "quake pros" in recent times.

of course it's a plus and you shouldn't expect competitive gaming to be a real career path, but instead of laughing, finger-pointing and judging, people should remember. remember this is a guy you've seen grow, who isn't a bad seed, yet his life took a wrong turn. I hope this tale will raise some concerns and won't just be dismissed as a "yeah a random polish guy ended up in jail because he started selling drugs once quake died" story

this is a a post I remember

I think what people seem oblivious to, or simply do not care, is what Cypher (or Avek, for the matter) is living at the moment.

They've been into Quake since they were teenagers, achieving results that would set them apart from 99.999% of their peers. This goes to all levels, from money (realize what it means to win 16000$ at Quakecon, as teenager, when you live in a country where the average salary is 300$), to traveling the world, to getting exposure to the public etc. And this was possible because of their talent and dedication; they put their lives into this.

Now they are in their twenties, and Quake can no longer support them. It's a turning point in their career, and not necessarily a good one. They live in countries where you don't have many opportunities, and may not really have options to move to a different country (Belarus is not in the EU regulations, for instance). Whatever level of education they have, for a non-esport job they have to compete with people that spent the last 10 years either in school or doing that job. This is very hard, even in easier, richer countries.

So, it is not a surprise if they have other things in their mind, if they are stressed and behave not exactly like gentlemen. It's a hard moment of their lives. Reducing this to "oh, he lost this or that and now rages" is plain stupid. Give them time, and they will sort out what to do professionally, and eventually go back to their former, happier, personalities.

To conclude, to me this is a measurement of the failure of esport today, and is precisely what good people should (and are) trying to change.

Finally a post getting somewhat closer to the point.

It's also quite ridiculous how ppl here jump to conclusions. And I'm not even talking about "innocent until proven guilty". Even if he had dealt with weed, so what. There's a legalization wave going through the US right now. In Amsterdam, employees of hundreds of coffee shops make a living from selling weed. Kind of a joke, really, even without making alcohol and tobacco part of a more meaningful discussion.

Most astonishing though is how ppl who cheered him on yesterday seem now ready to drop him like a hot potato. Guess the fear is that this "news", if it is any, might bring a bad rap to those remaining pieces of a game they're so desperately clinging to.

And did anybody ask how he's doing right now? Whether he's having a support system, the means for a lawyer? Of course not. Hey avek! Just deliver a good show while everything's cool and when it isn't anymore just get the fuck off. Not our problem that you didn't make better use of all those years. That seems to be the attitude.

About the bonus question, as you said cypher took that money and decided to study, so without 125fps he would be working on what he studied. Most likely he plays quake and csgo on the side, while working and while consistently earning money in quake too (unlike avek in his last years).

About e-sports, I think that's not the problem itself. All other quake pros studied something or took the opportunity and money to start businesses, just like all sportsmen know their dedication to it is something temporary no matter how successful at it. Avek is the only one that fell into the so called e-sports bullshit you describe, while the rest do very, very well or at least aren't prosecuted for drug dealing :P, including many eastern euros.
The problem is not the activity paying good salaries, whatever it might be. The problem is the one that chooses to solely focus on it and not even have a plan b.

About his personal circumstances, I would have loved to have earned as much as he did at his age, even more so while being the best in the world at something. With that amount of money and that reputation (top universities and good jobs do care about that stuff) he could have become whatever he wanted in life, with effort of course. He still can, since he still is relatively young to study full time or he could work at something not illegal that requires little education. But nope, he wanted some easy money and become a millionaire fast and without any effort.
Also I don't know how anyone hasn't contradicted this in the whole thread, but being from eastern europe, south america or whatever doesn't mean becoming a drug dealer or having next to no opportunities, as so many people have implied here.

With both things said, the problem is not e-sports or his personal circumstances. Avek is the only one to blame here, for his own actions. What happened is that avek took the easy way out all his life and there's consequences for that. He dedicated his life to exclusively play videogames all day (no studies or work on the side), followed by drug dealing and being part of a band with loaded guns, meth and everything (criminal activities). Any adult and any family knows that will not end well for the 99.999% of people.

I agree with you and I think my actual intentions have been somewhat lost by now.

I wanted to point out that the principle of "don't judge anyone until you have walked a mile into his shoes" doesn't get us anywhere.

You can never actually walk in someone's shoes. You can, however, empathize with a person's experiences and intentions, compare a person's behavior with the behavior of persons who have lived a similar life, etc.

And that's what we do on a day to day basis when we judge people. That's what has happened in this thread: Judging people from the information available. Sure, our judgments can happen to be wrong if we lack crucial information. But there's nothing wrong with it per se.

Judging is always counterproductive. Judging is categorizing a person relative to your subjective set of values. It's a very easy way to live and everybody does it all the time, but when you actually want to make a positive change, you have to set aside your values and acknowledge the Other as a subject capable of their own perception of reality and try to see how that perception led to their actions, rather than just saying their actions are good or bad.

Joking aside, I'm using "judging" in its most positive definition here: Using all available information and coming to a conclusion. The judgment might be that I don't have enough information available to draw a conclusion.

edit: Or to put it another way: I don't judge behavior as good or bad, but rather as understandable or inappropriate given the context for that behavior. That context includes empathizing with a person's perception of the situation in which the person acts.

edit2: Your argument seems to be heading in a direction where there are no bad decisions, because each decision is motivated and justified by a person's individual perceptions. Or am I misunderstanding you?

Good and bad are irrelevant. They're abstract concepts people superimpose over reality to make sense of it. Which of the two they use is based on their view of morality, which is completely subjective in the end, whether people realize it or not. You can doubt every justification for a certain view on right and wrong until you're left with nothing. Religious morality is founded on the validity of whatever a particular religion holds sacred and intellectual morality is impossible because without something sacred that transcends all others you can't prioritize one value over another. Suppose you say individual freedom is the most important, well, what makes individual freedom a better principle than let's say putting family first? You can debate about that for days, but really, any argument will boil down to "because I say so."

Morality is functional. It allows us to quickly make decisions without significantly harming one another and therefore keeping society safer. However, situations will always arise where our intuitive understanding of morality fails and right and wrong become very murky. When that happens, blindly following a certain idea on what's right is not the solution. It will almost certainly only serve to aggravate the problem. Instead, you should rid yourself of your bias and try to look at the situation as it is, then try to figure out how to get to an agreeable outcome.

To go back to the situation that's at hand here: I think people should hold off on judging av3k one way or another and instead think hard about the why, so that similar situations can be avoided in the future.

Let me be more specific. Whether avek's actions to get to this point are wrong, right, understandable, baller, tragic or anything is not what's important. What's important is that something made a bright kid risk years in prison -- or possibly worse -- for selling drugs (assuming he was involved in the actual dealing). What makes a person do that? If you figure that out, maybe you can prevent it next time and maybe you can turn him into a good citizen again.

Not all people are educated in high moral standards, not all people are free of influence of crimial-minded peers, not all people are strong willed enough to resist temptation of easy money, not all people have full information on what opportunities are available, etc.

If you didn't grow up in ghetto with mafia friends, that doesn't mean you alone is responsible for the circumstances that lead you to criminal behaviour. Genes you're born with and environment in which you have grown up have enormous influence on your personality, values and decisions that you make, and you can't just change it all in a snap even if you know you're doing wrong things. If we all were in power to make our behaviour follow our best intentions, there would be no crime and no poverty and we'd be perfect utopian society of smart and healthy people.

I think I want to say that there's no point of searching for someone's fault in this, because it's wrong question to ask.

Being not poor doesn't really make you a better person, and if you think about it, people don't generally make decisions of their own. Any decision that you made is caused by information that you've been exposed to which is processed by strictures of your brain that have arisen partly by the programming written in your genes and partly by environment that was around (i.e. food, sleep schedule, education regime, bad/good parents or teachers, friends at school, etc). In all decisions that you make, there's very little of your own free will, because even something that you normally think as free will is actually enforced on you by your previous experiences.

So yes, it's sorta "society" but not because of av3k, but because EVERYTHING is mostly "society" in which people are mostly passive actors.

I think we need to understand one thing here, is that we all get tested in life.

Having money is also a grave test compared to poverty. It is very easy to completely derail yourself and make terrible decisions from vain desires especially if you have money and are around people that have money.

No matter where you are from, the family you are born into, the society, the schools you will attend, friends you make, one thing is for sure, during all this time you will have bad and good decisions that you will take.

You are being tested constantly in life, the point is to make the right decisions with what you got.

Selling drugs and engaging in criminal activity I would argue is not the right decision, because like Av3k will discover now will end up with you in jail and waste of potential.

Opportunity costs. I don't believe that Av3k did not have other options, because he would not be that good in Quake if he didn't have great potential for certain things.

I still believe that If he made better decisions he could lead a different life. Even if he wouldn't have made too much money, he could have found something else to do that's valuable.

But money is the core problem people get into illegal activities, majority of people nowadays value success solely on money you can earn, and everybody wants to be a playa.

I belive the whole C9 team knew about it too (but too bad to ever go far enough in a tournament to use it lol), and a few randoms not playing at invitationals.

This was all brought to light after smn getting busted and releasing the list of people who was customers of superx(or whatever his nick was), and he was on the list, so as soon as he did a suspicious shot on stream, people started investigating what wasn't there to begin with.

Indeed as you said yourself there was no clear peak in performance from him, rather a drop at the start of this year, which people claim to be him not using cheats anymore, but which might aswell just be a slump, the future will have to see where that goes.

That's still not proof, from time to time someone does unique things in any walk of life that makes even decent players look bad.

If you want to prove someone is a cheat, simply get him to record himself playing, a cheat will always refuse, or demonstrate a level of skill below what they do when they are playing with cheats.

That's the best way to hang a cheater, what you've done is say if someone does something new, unique and effective, its good enough to hang them, that's only going to get you discredited, even if you are proven right on this particular instance, your theory of everything is wrong because YOU WILL one day come across someone who is just unique.

How come you can get legal drugs to get your dick high but not your head high?

How does one define what drug is legal and another one isn't without realising they are a prisoner in their own world?
