Sure plenty of games that copied Quake or actually used its engine have strafing or bunnying, but it was the source. And compared to Unreal Tournament's mario tippy tappy the keys rubbish it's incredible.
It's' also one of the main reasons it's such a competitive game, because there is such a large learning curve for the movement alone.

You REALLY don't get the movement in Quake do you...

Waddling about at 200ups, games without strafe jumping/circle jumping at all, enforced view bob, godawful sensitivity feel, forced 30 or 60fps caps if you're lucky.

There are just pretty much no games that feel as fluid or as great to control, or have the learning curve for movement alone that Quake does. And even if you come up with one or two that arguably do ( Warsow?) they are entirely Quake clones anyway.

Intricate dodging. Speed. Micro movements.
The fact 2 players can have different speed depending on strafe skill.
Other games have a set speed for movement.
UT for example has jump dodge.
But the speed of the jump dodge is the same regardless of who does it.
A circle jump can range depending on timing and skill of player.
Same with strafe jumping. Some max out at 600 ups... some max out at 1000 ups.

With game play getting from point a-b faster.
Short cuts that wouldn't be possible otherwise.
Speed bursts with wall clipping.
But mainly getting from point a to point b faster than the opponent.

Movement in quake is weapon based too.
Rockets, plasma and nades can help you take short cuts that otherwise wouldn't be possible.

ut is slow and clunky. I've played ut2k3/4 and ut3. They're fun but not the same.
I started with ut but chose quake after a few months of each.
Quake is more fluid and feels natural.

Dodging in UT = moving further because you've double tapped a movement key, UT's crappy digital movement.
So, he means you can't dodge the same in UT as in quake because it ends up causing you to activate "Dodge"

Ok you're obv not interested in whatever this topic is but I think the best answer is options.

I think out of any FPS for almost any situation, quake gives you the most options. On a tactical level. Maybe even strategic levels, but hard to compare CS strategy to Quake. Tactics example: In traveling, you can walk and run and jump like in other games but you can also have the variable speeds and turning power that other games don't have. This makes routes and traveling distances much more complicated and gives more options than Halo.

Fighting, in CS correct if I'm wrong but the fights themselves are fairly simple. You have small bursts, spray, simple strafes, recoil control is just memorizing a pattern. What options do you have to play with, assuming all players have decent skills? Peek or don't peek, duck or don't duck. Once you get shot you can't really move anymore so that's out. Most options you have go before the fight in strategy section, or if you can do some tricky smoke/flash or dodge around low sens. Maybe I'm wrong tho. Fights in Halo just seem to play out the same short scripts over and over. Dodges are so slow and the bullet magnetization so strong that you may as well stand still and fight. Sure, you could try to deviate from the OP rifle setup, but what good are useless options.

Dkt actually mentioned this a long time ago (before he got a job) that in one way the UT dodges give more options mid-fight than vq3-style gameplay. Because you can't exactly circle jump while returning damage in the middle of a fight to dodge a rocket splash. But UT dodge allows this. Though bhops in QW probably put UT dodge to shame even there. But naturally you sacrifice many other movement options going to "digital" dodges from "analog" movement.

Also faster gameplay means more options available in general. Even if assume all other things are equal, compare to Halo or some slow shooter and you make more decisions/have more options in 1 minute of quake than 1 minute of slow shooter.

More options means more control over the game, more decisions to make and more influence from player.

Quake has Really different weapons. They vary by bullets speed, damage, explosion wave, noise distance, and combat distance. Even in battle they has some balance depend on map location and players distance.

In most common shooters you has 50 types of rifles, or machineguns with same shoot principle. They vary only by damage. :(

6th Last Star: In Quake you must control resources(devices) like in strategy: Weapons, Armors, Health. You must use a timer and your memory.

90% players cant use timer and control resources, because it very hard for their brain. But these feature makes ~50% of gameplay.

Quake is the best game that emphasizes the art of killing. No other one i ever played was about respawning only to murder another equal person.

Most of the games are about objectives, defense/offense, classes, items, stupid weapon advantages. Quake is really about coming up to a dude, using more or less equal weapons and equal dodging and performing better to kill him. Better you overcome inequality of stack - more satisfaction.
