I know there are plenty of ex-convicts in CA. But why? Why this game?

Maybe the only reason why convicts play quakelive is because their family plays it. Look at gnik for example. He's w/ the mexican gang on quakelive.

Def do not want to run into these people in real life. I'm surprised they held qcon for this long.

I'm sure you stopped hosting servers because you have realized the uselessness of hosting servers for dirty criminals is a complete futile and unrewarding experience. Once you stop hosting, people wouldn't even remember that you did and they won't even pay the respect where it's due. I'm sure you have realized this that's why you have completely stopped. I stopped hosting on a whim that there's enough people hosting lolca. Was hosting an attack and defend server with threewave settings but very few showed interest. Then I switched to graveyard shifts. Quake live is dead during the hours I'm awake so I just went with the flow and stopped playing altogether. If I get the itch I play quake 2 since there's always a busy dm or ctf server going. Wodx server is my favorite.

I'm not sure why I would deserve respect for hosting a server through ql.

Plus that in avek's case he is a pro player that spent so much time playing games that he never developed any marketable skill (the only one in quake so far), and probably is used to earning easy money and that comes in huge bursts at a time. On the latter, what studying and/or work teaches is that success comes with a constant effort, which is the opposite of e-sports (getting up at 4'o clock just to sit on the pc).
