"I'm not even trying and I win haha", people like you really just invest more than anyone else emotionally (and generally time wise, too) and say that to tell yourself otherwise. I don't take games that seriously anymore. I try to win and so but it goes way to long time between each duel for me to get good enough at it. I will probably never get better then an 1500 elo scrub and i have settled with that. If i had more time i would probably take it more seriously and try too improve. But i don't have the time.

I try to not take QL very seriously but the player base makes this difficult and frustrating. I can't speak for Europe but in North America nearly every player is a douchebag. Children in victory and defeat. I love the game so I continue playing. If it were any other game I would have stopped due to how immature and pathetic the community can be. I achieved what I wanted in Quake a long time ago so I play to have fun. I don't know what makes people so mad and judgmental in a game. Statistics/ranking/ELO planted a seed in the minds of fools who believe they're on a mission to achieve greatness... online. My previous session two adult children were heinie bruised over CA drama so they wanted to be the king of thunderstruck, not knowing that they must settle that with jewro, heartless and some boy who plays guitar. Back to back they lost to simple +forward LG and what unfolded was embarrassing. Claims of being drunk, whining, wanting best of 3. If only they knew I don't care. No drama just GG.

I think most people, well i cant speak for others obviously, i definately have been in that 'serious' mindset of being better than others and if only i would try i could beat em all etc. Its something which you normally put away as you become older get more life experience and thus, more mature. At that point you also start spending more time for other things, which is why this type of player is harder to find on servers.

I used to take this game very seriously! Monitored my 'ELo' and everything.
I started, back in the day, playing Quake 1 and QW on an dialup modem.
I never evolved past the original FFA game type over the years.

On QL I was still averaging a good 2-3h a day.....right until they fucked us!
I've said it before and I'll say it again:
It would have been smarter to do ANYTHING else! It would have been cheaper to do nothing! LOADOUTS ended QL and I take it incredibly personally that people this stupid are allowed to screw up something I loved so much.

Now? Now I don't give a flying fuck about QL game play.
Every game is just an extended warmup phase, and you all remember keeping track of how many kills you scored during the warmup phase, right?

These days, the only fun I can find in the game is trolling people. If I can roll a group of noobs 50-0 or more realistically 50-4; and then convince them that I am cheating: That is a good in game moment!

So my passion for the game has become visceral hatred of Syncerror, Sponge, and the idiots who are supposed to be in charge of them

it appears that they are back to winter 2013 population levels so everything they built up to, to try to garner players, failed. If the game couldnt support itself on the playerbase prior to going on steam, it certainly wont last much longer if it hasnt grown since. But the one variable you forget is that tim willits does not have any clue what happens with quake live as they are too busy with doom. expect quake live to be around till doom comes out at least.

Lots of people like to play quake, not to be the best (well, some do, which is good), but to blow off some steam after a day of work, deeply thankful for still having the chance to play their beloved game even after 10 years or so.
To say Quake is dead now is like saying 'Hey, I've been riding this same girl I've really liked for 10 years now, I don't like her anymore'. (So I must be gay).
Well, there's prolly a lot of folks really happy to ride your girl any day, just because they can, and like to do so.

I actually kinda agree most duellers take quake way too seriously. You can see it in the lingo, a lot of people talk about practicing rather than playing, but instead of truly practicing and experimenting from time to time, they really just seem to want to win every match and always go for the safest (stalest :D) options. I think a lot of people get their reward from elo and qlranks doesn't differentiate between games, every game matters equally to your rating so every game is equally important, so letting yourself go easy and cruise around just having fun is never an option unless you're sure you'll win anyway.

Not serious. No money, no audience. What good is a game when you're only playing it for fun. It's all about the monetary value and unfortunately there is none for this game. This game is for trolling.
