Yeah, it's a stupid fast paced arena fps, with rocket launchers, grenade launchers, fancyful chainguns, powerups, pick up items, non-regenerative health, bunnyhopping, etc.
See, you are displaying the same kinds of prejudice that hindered Quake's growth. Lots of people will look at the idei of competitive Quake as if it's ridiculous and childish because the game is "not realistic", "absurd", etc.
Team Fortress 2 competitive 6v6 skill tranfer easily for Quake, hera are some videos of different classes:
I had 1000 hours in TF2 before I booted up my dad's disk of Q3, but I hardly spent 1 % of that time learning the movement.
Scout is approximately as fast as the doods in quake, and has double jumps which can switch direction in midair. Every other class is slow as hell compared to quake and can only jump once. There's a tiny amount of air control, and it's not particularly useful unless you have as much air time as scout.
The rocket jumping for soldier is quite similar to in quake, except clip size and reloading limits the amount of RJs you can put together in a chain. There's a similar explosion propelling type deal with the demoman, who has sticky bombs which explode with the same force as rockets. Grenade jumps are much less useful. You can do smaller jumps with explosive flairs in the pyro's secondary. The pyro can also "airblast" other people, which basically means push them away.
Some weapons modify move speed. There's also a silly gamemode with grappling hooks and dropped powerups that often change movement in some way or another.
Scout is slightly faster than quake movement. Double Jumps like Ephemix mentioned. Their's also weapons with modifiers to that.
Soldier does have rocket jumps, and even a quake based rocket launcher. You take significantly less damage from your own rockets than you did in quake ESPECIALLY if you run gun boats so you jump much much more often. Air strafing to avoid being shot out of the air, and go around corners is really important. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9notxSwwdY
Demo Sticky jumps do a lot of damage to you but you go much further than you would with a single rocket on soldier. Air strafing still applies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taQ1kt1ote0
Heavy doesn't have much movement and you can't even jump if you have your minigun spun up. You can however jump and then spin up your minigun at the same time.
Medic is the 2nd fastest class in the game and it's considered a relatively good quality for a medic to have is the ability to surf off of enemy rockets and grenades to avoid taking yet more damage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEI0Q4RN4TY
Engineers have the ability to jump via there sentry guns you will take a lot of damage but it's still possible and is used in competitive sparingly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0y9otRGWUg
Keep in mind a lot of those videos are not the most realistic for what you would actually be doing in a server, but does give you a really good idea of the movement mechanics and what is possible in tf2.
I forgot this shit is 14GB... Holy shit 13 gigs of hats.
FPS is shit on my wooden PC too :D
Got some high performance config and look at what I found there!
fps_max 60 //personal preference, set this to "0" for unlimited fps
\:D:D::D:::D/
Default fov is... how much? 20? Jesus fucking christ. Gun models are HUGE. Rockets and movement speed are slow.
It's a shame there is so much walking and all I can do is press W and wait.
At least rockets can send people flying easly.
Not the best game to play with very, very random people it seems.
fov_desired 75-90 - Set desired field of view. (higher values show more of the battlefield at the cost of fps) (can also be changed from advanced video Options)
viewmodel_fov <number> - Sets distance in which your weapons are drawn, higher values show more of the weapon and arms but may show missing parts. (can also be changed from advanced Options)
r_drawviewmodel 0/1 - Turns viewmodels on and off. (can also be changed from advanced Options)
Honestly, the only time you would need to use view model is when you play spy..or sniper with huntsman (bow).
TF2 is very CPU heavy (don't let the cartoony look fool ya).. and movement well.. scouts are faster but also much more difficult to control/aim when you are a beginner.
But i do know what you mean.. myself coming from quake i mostly play soldier as well. Rocket jumps can really help to get you moving but are much more difficult to perform than in quake.
Laughing at anyone who plays TF2 and says Overwatch looks dumb. You're so close to a revelation. Both games are shit. MOBA is shit. Casual is the new competitive, and it's shit.
Overwatch will be very different than TF2, those that goes away from TF2 to Overwatch won't be doing it cause it the same kind of game only newer, cause it won't be the same kind of game, this is what those that play TF2 a lot, and have been competitive, and went to play at the Overwatch thing in the US.
