Congratulations to team fazz (fazz FX DSHARP3 GibiskUss) for winning today's draft, team rehepapp at #2 and team ash at #3!

Seeing how this post seriously lacking comments about games themselves, I decided to share experience of this nice cup through my eyes. It's probably silly and useless, but anyway.

I should note that even though I'm a master of TDM, I prefer not to show great results to challenge other players and pretend to be almost like a casual QL player, so my typical TDM game result is about -20 net frags, and my TDM rating on #tdmpickup is usually something like -1 (while fearzzz has +53).

I waited all day before in excitement, and just as signups were opened, I signed up for the tournament right in first seconds. When the signups were about to close, we had 54 players, but thankfully, 2 others added in last minutes bringing the number of teams to 14.

When teams were posted, I found out that I was in Team Luminus, which consisted of me, Luminus - sounding modest and confident, like a real TDM pro, XPEHOPE3 - fun guy with loud microphone and Wood27, who spent his energy mostly on courageous fighting rather than on speaking in teamspeak. Unfortunately, I didn't have my microphone to participate in team coordination, so I just listened and tried to obey the commands of the masters.

Our first game was with Team Ash, whose leader is one of the prominent members of some unknown little team called 102. I don't remember the reason behind map choosing, but our first game was on Purgatory. I haven't played a lot of real TDM competitions with tough opponents (most of my experience is fun games in #tdmpickup), so I was overwhelmed at first. In fact, I completely lost myself and had a hard time understanding what's happening in the game. When I listened to teamspeak, I lost track of what happened on my screen, and when I focused on gameplay, it was hard to follow the teamspeak, so I did very badly. We lost by about 15 frags, and if not for my failures, we probably could even win. Second map was Limbus, and unfortunately I cannot remember a lot of it, but generally it was even tougher and it was hard for me to even get a weapon and go to position to help my team, since from all sides and from every hole someone always caught me with rail or trapped with rockets, etc. The Ash team was definitely very stronk on this map, so we lost it badly.

Next we had to wait for a long time for our next game in loser's bracket. We had to play with losers from 2nd round, and the 2nd round game didn't start yet because the 1st round winner wasn't determined yet. So we had to wait until first round game ends, then we had to wait until they play whole bo3 in the second round. The game, loser of which was to become our next opponent was between Team Gohann and Team Pseu. Team Gohann decisively lost first map and was about to lost 2nd map, but near the end pseu timed out which hung our fate on a thread. If pseu was to reconnect in a short time, his team would probably win and we'd play with supposedly weaker Team Gohann, but on the other hand, if he didn't they could either find a sub and still win, or they could get a default lose, which meant that we would either face stronger team in our game, or, if pseu left forever and no sub could be found, we'd move to next round by default and needed to wait even longer. Finally, after 15 minutes, Lam decided to give Team Gohann the win, while we continued to wait for pseu. Just as I went to make myself some coffee, the bastard returned (apparently, he had lost electricity for a while), and so first of all I didn't get to drink my coffee comfortably, and second in loser bracket we were faced with team who actually should have been winner in their game.

The map that was chosen (loser bracket is bo1, not bo3) was Limbus. We discussed our mistakes from previous game and decided to try to maintain maximum grip on rail and red armor. When the game started, I felt myself more confident, and our strategy seemed to work well, so in just over half of time we pwned the enemy team and won by mercylimit, which felt both as relief and joy, but also as burden because we were tired and weren't so thrilled to play a long and hard tournament.

Thankfully, we didn't had to wait for next game and right away went into match with Team Gwynplaine. Again, the map choice process lead to choosing Limbus as the map, so we went into game with confidence, repeating our strategy which worked previous time. My gaming shape was getting better and I was getting more comfortable in game, I won more fights than usually, including some crucial moments when I killed enemy quad and stole red armor once. Our strategy also worked well, so that game we also won by mercylimit, although we played almost full time.

Next up was a rematch with Team Ash. It's the first time I got nervous in a game. Before that it was all like just gaming for fun, but now as we come to round 4, and 3rd place which even had some prizes, was not unimaginable, the competitive spirit kicked in, and I felt really like in a movie when the main character is about to do the main thing which the plot is about. My shape was definitely good after last game, and I knew that Team Ash probably was fully warmed up after their journey through the tournament so we'd meet them in strongest form. The map choice eventually boiled down to either Purgatory or Limbus, and we decided to pick Limbus again since we gained some experience of winning on it. When the game started I took the rocket and went to rail where I met ash (himself). This is when I felt that this game is no joke. It's really hard to fight with ash, but I got some kind of adrenaline rush and killed him with rocket and spawn fragged several times not giving him access to rail. I don't like to give any importance to myself, but that IMHO was very crucial moment to the game, when our team took the lead and control of rail. The first half of the game was crazy, it was some of the most intense gaming I ever had. We were in the lead by 10-20 frags, and I did some good job a couple of times on stopping ash from getting the rail. Then came the turning point, when all enemy team combined their forces to get rail from us, and also they had good control of red armor and quads. That's how they first tied the game, and then steadily built the lead. I began to run into lots of traps and rail of ash was very painful, so I began to felt helpless. Eventually, we lost somewhat badly, but the whole experience was some of the best in my quakelive life.

That's how the tournament ended for me: 5st place, not a prize winning place, but still quite far into the brackets. And I should say it was awesome.

I will definitely do my best to participate in next #tdmpickup drafts and recommend any quake player who haven't done it yet, go to #tdmpickup and start playing real quake instead of loadouts and ca. It's lots of fun, and since I went there, I almost don't play other modes at all.

GGs. IMHO it would be better, if drafts would take the last 200-300 games into count, instead of 50, to avoid rating abusing.
