it's the RGB value for green, its brightness differs from model to model btw, eg. keel is brighter than tankjr on my setup.

It's 1. It's the combination of r_overbrightbits 1 and r_mapoverbrighbits 10 that gives the nice bright look. It's awesome on ztn/hub, but on some tdm maps such as dreadful place it can get too bright.

Yeah, 3 years later, still don't have proper working vertexlight on all released maps. Probably be another year before they trickle out all the fixed maps.

look at the last changelog, they're recompiling the maps and rereleasing/uploading them over time now...

Hence the emphasis on released. I know they already have the maps fixed (finally). Still means diddly until all the fixed maps are released. They could be releasing one map every week or so. But I'm guessing they'll wait for their big "QuakeCon" update in order to fluff up the changelog.

Well at least something is being done about it. It's slightly better than just letting it sit.

Indeed, I found this out when I tried to play Trinity and Quarantine. Hopefully they fix this soon. Now i"m back to my old graphics settings.

Just an interesting side note following on from this. A while back when doing a config, I was doing research as to what colour humans see best and it turns out that yellows and greens are the colours our eyes are most sensitive to, as we have more cone receptors for that band of colour spectrum.

This also depends of luminosity, it turns out that during the day we are most sensitive to yellows and greens, but at night we are slightly more sensitive to blues than usual.

Then when it comes to reaction time its more a case of contrast than sensitivity to the visual object. Generally there are two kinds of contrast: the contrast of brightness and the contrast of color. The contrast of brightness depends on the ratio of brightness between visual object and background... so in quake if you use dark settings with a bright model, or bright settings with a dark model. For a light source with pulse wavelength, ~555 nm is the most sensitive to your eyes in brightness, which means that the object with this wavelength in dark background should have the highest contrast subjectively. So that is why I play with a lower gamma but super bright model. This will help you see the model better.

Then when it comes to contrast of color it depends on the wavelength difference between the object and background. The human eyes are more sensitive for the difference between red and green i.e (try typing red text on a green background or vica versa). If you have a mixed color on the background, the best contrast for the object should be some color between ~555 nm and red. That's why "optical yellow" is good color for tennis ball on TV and is very noticeable (you will also notice with neon green and yellow how they stand out). So in practical application to quake, I use this principle for hitscan weapons (specially LG)... my model is bright green and I have a larger cross that changes to red when I am hitting the opponent (I think off hand the command is cg_crossHairHitColor or something along those lines). This greatly improved my LG over time as I am sure many of you noticed during years of quake.

So basically in terms of optics, its best to have a darker game environment with a green or yellow enemyModel it will help you spot them quicker. And then for aim, you should ideally use a red cross hair on the enemyModel

(but I adjusted this, my crosshair is green, same color as the enemyModel, and then I only use the red for hitscan... so when my crosshair essentially "disappears" because its blended into the model, my eye knows i have to aim... but for lg the crosshair will blink red so that I can track while aiming).

Just a light read if anyone is interested.

Also keep in mind that these differences are probably very negligible and if you are used to something else then by all means stick with it.

Looks like I've been playing with these suggested settings for a good while. Though I think it can be improved upon, you reminded me of something. It's late and I'm tired, so quick version...

Years ago when CS 1.6 was still the shit, I had obtained some sort of bind/command line which made my cross change color each shot. It was VERY pleasing to eyes as I remember, always felt fresh as it did a very cool flash changing the colors quickly through bursts.

I wonder if similar effect can be achieved with models/cross in Quake. I'm a console retard, so no idea how to do it.

No fullbright and I did r_overbrightbits 1 r_mapoverbrightbits 10 like this thread said. My config was good for several day but then I messed around some more and wrote the config. I guess I forgot to do a vid_restart though before I wrote the config because the next time I exec'ed it came out like above. I can't remember what I changed :/ I tried a lot of stuff but can't figure it out.

When I do turn r_overbrightbits 1 r_mapoverbrightbits 10 back to defaults the problem goes away. But I had them set at r_overbrightbits 1 r_mapoverbrightbits 10 with no problems earlier.

try setting the mapoverbrightcap to 75 with mapoverbrightbits 10.. thats what i came up with when i got rid of my weird bright walls. And after the last update my mapoverbrightcap kept getting reset to default even though its in the autoexec. but i also use overbrightbits 2 so it might be a little different for you.
