it would be idtech6 now, but it's not for large open-world games, so I doubt it. Also look at the trailer, the graphics looks very dated (same as with Fallout 3), I would be surprised if they could pull out such look from idtech5-6, not impossible tho, but it would be a surprise indeed.
With those incoming low level apis it should be possible to maintain higher megatexture detail and faster streaming, so it very well may be tech6.
To me this trailer looks pretty okayish, the world looks detailed (and the environment is totally static like in rage) but the picture isnt overly flashy, not too many reflective surfaces and other bullshit fx and the lighting looks pretty simple and straightforward. Framerate should be pretty decent even on the consoles. And i wont get eyecancer because of all those sparkling glittery crap fxes. And a nazi robot doge skin from wolfenstein to replace that scheisse dx7 german sheperd would be sehr gut.
It is the same, Morrowind and everything before Skyrim used Gamebryo, now they are using the Creation Engine, which is a slightly modified Version of the Gamebryo......
Yes, but it doesn't matter how fast you can stream, you still couldn't stream everything as the sun/moon would move on the sky as how it does in games like Fallout or Skyrim.
You can see from 2:24 more clearly how the game looks like, and it doesn't look like idtech5-6 to me, more like the same crap Gamebryo they used in Fallout3 and the rest.
Its also hilarious how Bethesda regulary breaks the lore of fallout, by putting things that have no sense in their games. Just look at the trailer: Advanced PA before the war? BS, its post war tech. And obviously another fucking vault. just great.
I replayed fo1-2 like a few years ago and had a blast!
But as far as I remember the combat is just too slow, you know waiting for the animations to finish all the time... don't have patience for that shit anymore time is too precious.
Never looked into mods tho, I wonder if there is one to make combat faster that'd be awesome, cause other than that I really don't mind old games at all.
as for trailer, I didn't even know they were making a new one lol I'm not keeping up with games these days. seems like they are re-using almost everything from the previous game even audio.
just somewhat enhanced graphics.
well I have no expectations at all, don't care if it's good or sucks.
after being disappointed lately even by kickstarter games I backed or really looked forward to(wasteland 2, pillars of eternity - both failed...) just don't care anymore.
no expectations = no disappointment.
finished it when it got released, been a while lemme recollect my memories...
the engine choice was unfortunate, game looks borderline unpleasant, and that's coming from someone who normally doesn't give a shit about gfx. should've been top-down 2D... and as a 'bonus' you get to rotate the camera all the time, which is a huge chore and doesn't add an value whatsoever...
loot is randomized and is super generic, no 'unique' items or anything like that nothing memorable, just a very boring gradual progression of equipment.
also chests randomly in the middle of nothing etc. what the fuck totally makes no sense.
combat is underwhelming not that much tactics involved there's only so much you can do. opponents are very generic and forgettable just like loot, same opponents all the time doing the exact same things over and over no unique enemies with unique abilities or whatever. super boring...
uhm that's what I recall right now off the top of my head. it's def. worth 1 playthru but there are too many questionable decisions and things they did wrong. game could've been soooo much more and better it's a shame.
so pillars got pretty good ratings, which is misleading imo both to users and devs. but I can understand why it is so. ppl got huge emotional(and monetary) investment in the game and fail to be really honest with themselves, bar a few souls who actually dare to speak plainly about their disappointment.
so the way it went down was, I started playing, I didn't really get hooked on the story or get attached to npc-s, which were all quite mediocre, and kept telling myself: ok ok let's be patient til it gets better, in the meantime let's have some kickass combat. except combat never got good, lol. it's a huge clusterfuck because of bad visuals, hard to see anything and impossible to gain any control, hard to even make out buff/debuffs etc. fights are also too fast in the sense that you want burst dmg, no time to cc/heal/whatever. hp+endurance system seems broken, a lot of battles clothies are just impossible to keep alive and then the tank(s) while regen-ing endurance, autoattack down what's left, while I go take a nap. goddamn it's fucking ridiculous, how things like this slip thru without testing.
let's see what else. game suffers from stuff 'genericness' similar to WL2. all the loot are the same no flavor at all, so fucking boring, so are the skills and character level progression, insanely boring and generic. skills or perks that give you a minor boost or bonus, nothing to look forward to at all...
the zoning load times are horrible. when you're in the big city, and every time you enter or leave a house, you get a ~8 sec load screen, it's the worst memory management I've ever witnessed, and drives you crazy. they still haven't fixed this afaik.
now to mention something positive, the game looks absolutely gorgeous and very detailed, hats off to artists. just makes it more a shame though that everything else sucks. all in all, didn't get hooked on the story(I guess they had to come up with something after it was funded, that explains why it's so 'forced' and doesn't come natural), also instead of being given small bits and being intrigued you're just force-fed huge chunks of info every now and then... combat sucks(I haven't even mentioned the engagement system yet which forces you to stay in melee range once engaged, and automatically take dmg as you disengage), it's a drag and got nothing in common with strategical challenges of old infinity games. loot sucks, npc-s are ok-ish.
I forced myself to get some playtime in, but I just wasn't enjoying neither story or combat, so I quit. it is disappointing as I had faith in this dev team, but I guess it's best not to have any expectations.
the rare times I actually sit down to play something which is like never nowadays, best to play some old game where I know what I get. :) I'm gonna give Torment: Tides of Numenera a chance once it comes out, hopefully they've learned from the mistakes of WL2 and don't fuck it up - Torment fans would be really sad.
Tl;dr
For a fan of Infinity Engine RPGs, PoE is a huge disappointment.
For a general fan of RPGs, PoE is a decent game to kill a couple of aternoons with, but it gets boring quicky.
Long version
Good things:
- I really liked the graphics. The woods, cities, everything looks nice and detailed.
- PoE has THE BEST inventory/journal management ever seen in a game.
- Some of the better tracks reminded me of Jeremy Soule.
- Loved the sketchy art / text system when interacting with some items.
- Managing your own fort was a great idea.
Bad things:
- The writing is bland and generic. You cant help but think youve seen and heard it all in other games. Dozens of times.
The main story is boring, quests are uninteresting. There are tons and tons of text in the game, but unlike in BG/PS:T/Fallout, you wont give a fuck about any NPCs or their stories, because nothing ever stands out.
- Probably the worst part of the game is combat. The devs forced a "fair play" spirit, meaning you cannot pre-buff, you can't retreat and the game won't let your characters become truly powerful.
Once combat starts, you'll get this "walking in mud" feeling, for your party only. Enemies are usually faster than you and insta kill everyone who tries to run (retreat penalties). Even a fucking beetle has a ranged attack, which means your spellcaster(s) will be dead 3 seconds into combat. Not that it matters - PoE is all about ranged weapons, not spells or swords. Your best melee fighters will be dealing damage in single digits, while anyone with a crossbow/pistol deals 40-60. So you just hold the line with your tanks, waiting for fights to end, throwing a healing spell every now and then. It's boring, frustrating and endlessly tedious.
Oh and there are plenty and plenty of fights, just so you know.
- Artifacts and unique items are as uninteresting as the story. No special effects, no 'broken' items. Just improved defense or + to your stats, which has no impact on anything anyway. The same applies for enchanting and crafting.
- The whole game feels rushed.
- Devs got "heavily inspired" by BG/ID/PS:T, but there's nothing in the game suggesting so. I mean qualitywise - other than that, maybe I missed some easter eggs, I dont know.
- The stamina/hp/campfire thing is retarded and adds NOTHING positive.
Camera rotation is a double edged sword - it gives a more 3d-ish feeling, you get to see the area from other points of view, but chasing loot crates by spinning the camera is really annoying like you said. Overall I'd say it does more bad than good.
I haven't finished it yet, I liked some decision making elements, the game is enjoyable but so far I can't say it's something to write home about.
Hopefully the ending will be so shocking that it'll change my mind :D
You don't need any mods. There's a 'combat speed' slider in options both in f1 and f2, which makes combat significantly faster. It doesn't affect the death animations, but who cares, those are satisfying as hell anyways.
oh ok. it's been a while. somehow don't recall that even tho I'm usually quite meticulous when it comes to settings.
guess I'll replay fo1 some time after summer. I prefer it over the sequel tbh, it has a more serious tone. :)
I like both f1 and f2 equally, but I agree the dark and hopeless atmosphere of the first one is unique. That and the writing are the main reasons I couldnt enjoy F3 or NW.
Same yo \o/ I'll be spending far too much time on this game, fallout hipsters, eat a dick and swallow the news, not every game will suit you \o/ go fo4!
Bethesda should have thought of the future, let obsidian get their 85% metascore cash for New Vegas and contracted them again for Fallout 4...
This looks disappointing from the trailer already :|
unfortunatly looks like the same engine as fallout 3, which is very unpleasant when it comes to mouse / keyboard controls.
took me ages to get into fallout 3 back then, where walking was way too slow, and running was too fast when you only wanted to walk around.
the gameplay just didn't feel fluid at all, which was a shame compared to the rest of the game which i played for 200h+ together with NV.
this i had managed, but still it felt way worse than like any FPS available(ye, it's not a FPS, but it would have been so much better if it was so fluid playable like those).
The graphics doesn't look great, but I can live with that.
What bothers me is that "Blade Runner meets Left4Dead meets Steampunk, all that in an overpopulated world covered with some sand" theme. I mean what the fuck.
I wish they finally hired some good writers and designers who would go through the original fallout 1/2 games and make notes what's that post-apocalyptic world all about.
Right now I can't see F4 being any better than F3/NW, meaning an about okay rpg with guns with background that doesn't make much sense.
It's the same with half life 3, only worse in the latter case. People whine becase they don't have a thing, as soon as they have it, they quickly forget it, or shit all over it, and search something else to whine about.
I constantly read about half life "fans" pretending half life 3 should be made in source instad than source 2. Go figure.
Because technically Half Life 3 is suppose to be hl2 Episode 3 which never happened or got cancelled because valve was too busy making csgo tf2 and l4d
People complaining about hl3 usually don't even know the episodes concept. And it's retarded anyway to wish a game to be made in source instead than in source 2
I've put undoubtedly more than 300 hours in both New Vegas and Fallout 3. I've played the original Fallout 1, 2, Tactics long before any Fallout 3. Played also FOnline more than all Fallout single player games combined, an online version of the first two. They got shit right for Fallout 3, Vegas was better in every regard and there's no solid indication that Fallout 4 is going to be any worse.
What fucking saddens me, that even here most people have been brainwashed to appeal to graphics first. "oh, gfx doesn't look good in the trailer", fuck you morons, you don't know shit what Fallout is about.
uh, I don't think that ppl care much for gfx. it's just that from the trailer it looks almost exactly the same as the prequel which is a game from 2008... everything re-used pretty much, few enhancements and such at best.
let's be honest here fo3 didn't have amazing story or complex combat or anything like that, so graphics were a huge part of setting the atmosphere, so it is natural for ppl to expect improvements in that department 7 years later. vegas is a different beast due to obsidian actually developing proper story and script. vegas was better in every regard - true, except I actually enjoy fo3 scenery more, which is just personal preference. but anyway obsidian is not involved here we're talking about another bethesda game.
I've played all the fo games, too, I've grown up playing the originals, I've read the fo bible. I think I know what it is about. :)
now get some fresh air and calm your tits mate.
How in the name of fuck does it look the same? What is everything that is re-used? What are you yapping about? Everything in that trailer looked completely different than how it looks in Fallout 3, judging from my current 84 hour game-play time that still continues. The setting is the same universe, much of the art done in the previous games is going to be re-used for obvious purposes, and the graphics look superior to just about any Fallout game that has existed so far. What are you people whining about? There are some morons who think it's the same engine, for fucks sake, do you people have eyeballs in that box you call your head?
What the fuck? And no, I don't think you get what Fallout is about it seems.
ok I'll play along with your little game here:
what is it about? you seem to be an expert with exclusive understanding on this matter, so enlighten us. lol
also, had fo3 been a 2D top-down game, what would've made it an enjoyable game then? sure ain't the story or the script.
Even to this day, the 2D gritty, yet organic feel of the drawn art of the first Fallout appeals to many fans.
It's not the graphics, nor the story itself, not even the setting of the place where the story happens, but the universe that can be explored and developed upon endlessly in such a bizarre way only Fallout can do, at least has done so far (hence the popularity). Then again, we have idiots who shame the game, the genre, the developers over some insignificant details in the grand scheme of things by not even realizing the amount of effort required to make a game of such a scale. If the game can get you immersed into wasteland fucking up ghouls, raiding, being a saint or doing whatever the fuck you feel happy doing, then the game has been sold to you. And no matter the flaws of each Fallout game, each one of them has been able to sell an element of interest for very many players.
It's about possibilities. So yeah, every Fallout game so far has been right on it. And every single fucker who thinks otherwise, really don't get into what Fallout is what made it to this day.
Actually, if it is just a re-worked variant of the gamebryo engine, I'd be delighted!
This means they aren't re-inventing the wheel, the entire studio will be familiar with the working processes/pipelines, and we might actually get a game with a refreshingly large amount of content (for a modern release) than a ten hour experience with over used/re-used assets because it takes so long to produce each one.
Graphics have never, ever, EVER been the draw of the fallout series. Why does it matter now? And, as always for the fallout series, there will be an awesome community of modders behind it.
