But for stuff like quakecon everybody has been preparing and training and getting in the right mental state and is in top form and thats when its important.

I would feel the same about any prestigious online tournament too if I knew all the players had been working their asses off to be in good shape for it. It just so happens that lans are when this happens the most

Considering QL has no decent anti-cheat (or non at all more likely) there are probably cheats available to make it possible to cheat even on lan. (Except wallhack obvioiusly.)

All u have too do is have an auto shoot when your mouse goes over the enemy model and have it on a key so when u hold it its active. People wouldnt notice that shit even if you were standing behind them in real life. If you are decent at duel or at least good with controlling items just throw in a few auto shoot rails to come back and win, it will just look like you are good with clutch. This type of cheating is almost impossible to pick up on online too which is annoying as fuck if you suspect someone.

Autoshoots are actually very easy to spot. Think of rockets, occasional random pixelshots etc.... And keep toggling shit just sets you back, so you cant really focus on the game, would eventually forget to toggle off under pressure and a few days later fragmovies would have to be made.

You don't understand what I'm saying, say if you made it so if you hold down ALT it doesn't shoot until u actually move the mouse onto the model, it doesn't take away any focus at all really. Also it's not a toggle, it's only active when you hold it down.

No cheating, sure, although that's not really a concern online with top level pros like Cypher or Evil... But yeah it would matter for anyone who isn't at that level, considering "competitive" and "semi-pro" players have been known to cheat.

Equal pings, definitely, but it's more than just that. On LAN there's no warping, no through rails, no netcode bs in general, no timenudge, no idiots on wifi or power line networking, presumably no hit detection fails, etc.

There's a reason Tox was in a clan called c u on lan warp nudge. With the Quake engine, more so than any modern "e sport" game, there are some pretty bullshit play styles that develop based on warp and netcode shittiness.

big tournament = good rivals = more spectators = bigger prize = great gaming atmosphere = more motivation

I'd say online is like a training, you get to play with different players, check results, train harder, analyze, adapt, change your mindset, etc...

cypher himself said in earlier interview he beat evil dunno if dreamhack or qcon after a bad season in online cups but, eventually, he came strong with a good mindset after sorting things out in life and the game. He had time to get ready to the bigger tournament, perhaps he wouldn't have made this change if it was just another online cup...

Big cups create strong characters and really show who can perform at those moments and who can't, it isn't the same playing some tourney at home than playing on stage the final of the biggest cup of the year, it doesn't matter how skilled you are in the game, in tight moments like a final, any of both players can win, that's why they reached the final. The difference is gonna be at how you are going to handle the situation from outside the game to the inside; control your nerves, be confident about your decisions, don't focus on mistakes and keep going, etc... competition builds a character and LAN events are won by the greater competitor, not the most skilled one, IMO.

One analogy could be the NBA.

It has 82 regular season games and TEAM A can have the best ratio during season, but does that make them a better team than TEAM B who eventually won in the playoff? I think it doesn't because play'offs are harder and stressful, if you lose this time, you're out.

Put them face to face under the spot light in front of a live audience, equal circumstances, no gg ping crap and only then you can see who really shines and who breaks down.

but as also mentioned above this shows who shines in this particular (pressure/spotlight) situation, not necessairily who is the more skilled player (if there even is sth like "more skilled").

After attending some LAN tournaments, you'd expect players to be less conditioned by the circumstances and put up a better game. I guess some are just Cooller than others.

First and foremost routes to the servers, unlagged code, timenudge and dropped packets are no longer relevant. It's also more personal which is important for all sport. If you want results of online play to be personal achievement then that is up to you. For all competitors involved the offline tournament there are no excuses. All practice and past experience was preparation for this moment. There is also of course medals, trophies, money or whatever kind of prizes on the line. By the way I'm not completely sure if QL can actually do "LAN" so technically it's online... but very low latency.

What do you mean? If the server is hosted in the Local Area Network then, yes, it is LAN. As far as I know that's how things are setup at QCon and were at various major tournaments in the past. Many smaller "LANs" were probably using geographically close yet not on LAN servers.

I am not completely sure but I know there is no official LAN support. Perhaps only id events get LAN servers. That is a little unfair to players because surely the LAN experience differs significantly from online play.

The lack of LAN support is basically just a lack of public server binaries. There have been events where they were privately shared for use in a LAN. I don't think I would call it unfair but it's certainly a bit sad in a way that not everybody can run its own server (on his own hardware).

In any case, you are right about this : QL or not, LAN is pretty much the same as "online with very low latency", yes. There may be some games with special LAN features like turning off unneeded lag compensation artifices but that's probably not common.

Same conditions for everyone, lot of pressure, jetlag for some...
