I have a q6600 g0 with a r7850 and 4 gigs of ram and toxicity drops my FPS below 250, had to go back to 125.

I have a Celeron G1620 + Radeon HD 5450 512 MB DDR3 + 4 GB RAM and got stable 250 everywhere.

I had a crappy netbook that couldn't even open my email without crashing, but once I installed linux on it I could run quake 3 at 60fps with lower settings. Try installing linux and seeing if your performance increases.

Wouldn't much help him with quake live though. Unless he's willing to go through some emulator setup troubles I stopped paying attention to how well they worked a while ago.

Buying second hand PC for Quake Live would be possible. Old PC parts are really cheap but I always had ancient technology, apart from first PC in 1999~2000. Enough!

PC components aren't getting better with usage so I'd rather buy them brand new. And after getting modern PC why not go for 120hz monitor? : )))

If you don't have a good enough computer to run QL then I suggest you get your priorities straight. A computer valued $1000 10 years ago probably goes for less than $100 today. I remember when I couldn't afford a 12GB HDD and just this year I bought 1TB HDD for $50 which is about 83 times the amount of storage. If you already have a case, HDD and PSU set some cash aside for used motherboard and CPU auction. I don't know the minimum requirements for QL but you definitely won't have to spend much money in the end.

The worse thing is QL works 100 times shittier than Q3. Some maps are made perfectly to cut FPS in half.

Still his point stands. Not being able to get $100 or $1000 means he should get his priorities straight before thinking about playing videogames.

It's all the shitty extra lights bullshit they add. Notice how all of the classic maps that look good when playing at r_mapoverbrightbits 5 never drop FPS.

It's true QL is more demanding than Q3A, but I wonder how much is raw demand or simply poor optimization.

By the way be sure to use an Intel processor with Nvidia card. I suspect AMD hardware has some issues with QL by observation and personal experience. For example, I am currently running Phenom II 965 Quad Core with Radeon HD5870 GPU and do not have stable FPS even after exhausting attempts to resolve problem.

Power management to high performance and make sure you are starting the game with your nvidia card and not the intel one.

This can be setup in the nvidia control panel, you can also right click on the shortcuts and there should be a tab where you can choose what gpu you want to use.

I feel you. I played on 40 FPS for years and finally when I got a decent laptop, I'm stuck with a really shitty net. So shitty I get in permanent 999 lag the second I join the server. The download is not bad but the upload is so slow it takes like 40 seconds to upload a simple image. The old ISDN shits on this internet when it comes to gaming. Haven't played Quake since forever.

I'm in apartment in Prague and it already had an internet connection when I moved in. It's free so I didn't replace it because I'm planning to move out soon anyway.
