Also guys, tonight i tried some of the pros configs from quakecon 2015, so far :

- rapha (lol i dunno how he can be #1 dueler with such a weird looking and "default" config)
- noctis (his config makes sense and is very well organized but some of his settings look too complicated for my taste, i prefer when it's more "simple")
- latrommi (probably my favorite config out of those i tried so far, i mean i quite like how it feels and look and fov 90 <3)
- toxjq (lol just kidding, couldn't even load it cause too much cvars, made my quakelive crash xD)
- winz (pretty similar to toxjq but lower picmip value and different crosshair, i liked it as well but some settings were kinda weird, other than that like i said good config overall)

and...

- OPG (some russian pro fakenicker :D playing CA like me, he's good and good personality. His config was pretty similar than mine except that he use higher fov 98 and very small crosshair, which i personally quite like actually. But still i think i prefer big crosshairs :))

Isn't it weird. It's also strange how other top level players can be good with default/weird configs. There must be a few important cvars you haven't analyzed enough. I think we need another thread to discuss this farther.

I think at least part of it has to do with him playing more than one map.

the textures are more detailed in original but secondary somehow looks "smoother".

also don't tell me you didn't notice the lightningstyle :D it's a quite a big difference tbh

considering you're amazing at tracking with the lightning gun I would say that would be a huge difference to you. I personally like the first one.

maybe you could change the textures in the second to your first config and leave the lightning the same. So its your preferred beam, but smoother with the textures you mentioned?

yeah i was thinking about that actually. Today i tried to play with lightningstyle 5 and picmip 6, did like 20+ games vs good opponents, it was ok, i did well i think. But what distracted me was that with lightningstyle 5 when you do close range lg fights it's so fucking big :D, i have hard time to adapt to that again. I say "again" because before playing with lightningstyle 4 i played with 5 for 2-3 years, and it was fine, no real complain. But now that i'm used to 4 (probably 1+ year of playing with 4), sometimes it just feels difficult to keep track of the opponent especially at close range and the visual is not the same so it's like changing crosshair you know :D. And i don't think i have the patience again to adapt to new settings.

about picmip 6, it was overall nice and smooth but on some maps i wouldn't mind some more textures tbh :D. I think now i'm perfectly used to picmip 4 and i quite like the "raw" feeling of it.

and also with my current config (picmip 4 lightningstyle 4 fov 90) i managed to outshaft quite a lot of good lg players, so sometimes i ask myself "why change something that works ?" :)

so at the end i think i'll keep my current config (original one) and stick with it forever :). If it works very well, no need to change actually :)

in fact what motivated me to make this thread is because, like i said, i tried some pros configs from qc 2k15 and i liked the look of latrommi's and toxjq's configs. But that's pretty much all :)

so yeah, i think i ll keep it like it is or maybe try picmip 6 lightningstyle 5 some more the upcoming days/weeks and see how it goes.

I'm definitely a fan of the secondary cfg. The flat look of it is nice and sharp. The first one is trying to have that 'low poly' look, but it's splotchy and messy in my opinion.

That being said, I use the lightning from the first one. It uses less screen real estate.

I'd set max fps 250, and higher resolution. No need for full HD (I use 1024x768) but 640x480 is overkill.
Lightning style 5 is less distracting, not so bright and pulsating, but it's personal preference.
Removing texture details and using overbright cap is great for enemy visibility. But it also loses some geometry data, edges become invisible, so it may be worse for movement.

I don't think the beam matters much at all. The crosshair is much more important. Maybe certain crosshairs pair with certain beams better. Beams 5, 4 and 1 are easiest to ignore because they are either not very animated or not very big. Beams 3 and 2 are the hardest to ignore because of how animated they are. So probably the most relevant test you could run is how you like 3/2 compared to 5/4/1. I'm willing to bet that you perform nearly the same with each one though. Like I said before the crosshair matters more IMHO.
