shame makaveli is falsely associated by the community as this raging, all aim no brain type of player when in fact he's one of the true students of the game

I actually thought Makaveli was more of a brain type player. Apart from his inconsistent rail, his aim was pretty weak. Although I wasn't around when he was active so it could just be from looking at old games when the communities general aim had improved by then. I do remember watching a few Quake 3 games though, and I thought he didn't have good control over his mouse, but he still did decent.

I've had zero knowledge of this guy prior to meeting him other than knowing he was with the K9 guys and a lan-proven player. Hung out with him and Usurper and a few other dudes back in 2009/2010, definitely one of the most mellow guys I've ever met.

Fair enough reasoning, but as someone who was in the Unreal community from the first version of the game I know I could personally shine some light on a number of things that will otherwise continue to go unknown until the end of time. I know being "the #1 American UT player for x amount of years" doesn't grant legend status, but there's a lot of story to be told hiding within a decade of the game(s) and I was pretty much in dead center of it all.

Personally I'd vote for Lauke and Gitzzz to do a dual interview. Gitzzz was Lauke's Ivan Drago, and the way their history played out over the years of UT99, to the very last tournament for 2k4 is reason enough to get them on the microphone together. Seeing both perspectives at once would be interesting.

Do one with Vo0. Vo0 won more Painkiller tournaments than Fatal1ty, but people remember Fatal1ty because he won that big tournament and there's many shows about him. Vo0 has also won few small tournaments in Reflex recently so it would be cool.

Rapha still is too much of a newfag for this series. Considering QL's development is coming to an end, I think the correct time will be right after Quakecon 2016.

Rumors say next year there won't be a QL duel tournament at Quakecon, as it will only feature an all-Quakes event ('Quad Damage), and maybe Doom 4 too. If so, then this is the perfect time to host a cypher-rapha QL grand final (showmatch), so that the QL champion is decided. After that then rapha should be interviewed.

The tresh interview was much more mesmerizing. Cypher was pretty decent and he couldnt even speak proper english. But atleast he seemed honest and truthfull.

But im waiting for the "reflections - Av3k" 15 years from now when he is out of the prison. That one will be epic.

In response to both of you I can only say I have nothing but fond memories of my experiences from Quake, the places I saw, and especially the people I met.

I've met so many talented and intelligent people throughout my experiences that I truly feel blessed. I was just being honest. I don't have any animosity toward any of the people I met during my time as a "pro" quake player.

Its nice for you that you have nothing but fond memories from your quake days. But for us viewers it doesnt really give us much. Its just like a good book. It has to have some intriguing stories/rivalries.

But thanks for taking the time, its always nice to see old-timers contribute back to the community.

The problem is I really didn't have a "rival." The players who could have been my rivals in California, were personal friends. So most of my stories will be around that, and how much fun we all had. After my friends quit, I was pretty much untouchable online on the west coast for over a year.

Zero4 was more like a protege than a rival. We still talk to this day.

The only real rival I could think of would be Fatality, as he took 1st and I took 2nd in consecutive tourneys. And even in that instance it was a friendly rivalry. We hung out. I didn't have any ill wishes for the man and I am very happy for his success. Again, another person I still keep in contact with.

I'm just a laid back kind of guy man.

As I mentioned to comrade, if there is a specific topic you are curious about, I'd be happy to go into more detail if I am able. I know people may feel I was "sugar coating," but I'm just being honest.

Its really great for you that you had such a great time, it really is. But for us who are watching(atleast me) are hoping for some stories that never was told before for unknown reasons.

Looking back I think I thought it was a bit corny, but at the same time I thought it was cool that a gamer had a support system around him for competition. It was really something I felt was missing during my time as a player. As I said in the interview, I literally had a friend help me pay for my trip to a tournament, I could barely pay for my food, was staying with a friend in his hotel room, didn't have a PC to practice on, etc. Hardly ideal for competition.

When I look at the support system modern gamers have for competitions, I think PowerK and his team were on the right track, that is for sure. That "professional attitude" is a good thing. Not just for the competitors, but for the community image overall.

I really don't know what happened to PowerK after the tournament.

In my personal opinion I don't think Rix would have done well against Thresh. Just one man's opinion, but I see that game being fairly one sided.

I recall thinking Rix was RL orientated/dominant and a conservative player. Force him to be offensive and I remember him having more difficulty in those scenarios.

Finally got around to listening it through. Great interview, he was well mannered but I didn't feel like he dodged answers. Just seems really happy with his experiences in esports, moved on successfully and is happy that someone is interested in his story.

Plus he's still around sometimes, that's awesome.

one question. i read that in early quake3 fata took every item/powerup on the map, counted items and ran a route on the maps.

what i dont get, this couldnt be new, there was q1/qw/q2 before. so what was new about fatas playstyle/strategy?

It was relatively new at the time. You have to imagine a time in FPS/Arena history where 'control' was an unheard of concept. People were just starting to integrate the mouse into their configurations, as games like Doom and Doom 2 were playable with just a keyboard.

When Fatal1ty was starting his reign as a dominant Quake 3 player, he took the concept of WASD and controlling items that Thresh had pretty much invented, and built upon it. It was an approach that seemed much more dominant at the time than it does today because the movement was nowhere near as refined as you've seen in the past ~5 years. Strafe jumping wasn't even common place yet.

Your making 2000 sound way too primitive. By that time people had been using mice and wasd for years in q3test, q2 and q1 and even earlier (see Thresh in doom). Good players were already controlling and timing items heavily in both q2 and q1.

I think Fatality was the first to really take a professional approach, his map knowledge was second to none, spamming corners with rockets/grenades heavily correctly predicting enemy movements, along with perfect multiple item timing and solid hit scan aim with his determination to win, he was hard to beat.

This was all built from the hours and hours of serious practice he put in, he earned that #1 spot.

Yeah I remember when I switched to WASD + mouse after reading about it in PC Format magazine in around 97/98

at least in q1/qw there is no armor decay so you are not forced to cycle through them.

Man, it's been so long I totally forgot about that. Yes, armor decay starting in Q3 was lame. Limits your strategic options. I don't recall armor decay being present in Q2 either.

I remember now, I used to be able to "leave armors/MH" up because I wanted to push a specific position. In Q3, it became more necessary to just rotate and farm the armors.

yep, it narrows the possibilities and therefore the play styles quite a bit.

IIRC they wanted to avoid that super campy play that is possible in qw for example where both players stack up and then just sit and wait (dm2). However that also limits the mind games that the old armor systems allow.

I would also point out lowering the game timer from 20 to 15 and now to 10 also changes things quite a bit.

Go back in the old days of 20 minute games... Shorten them to 10 minutes. You get different results in many of them. I lose to Shub in our first game for example. Immortal would have lost to Sniper at Extreme Annihilation. (Immortal won the tournament) I'm sure there are many comebacks and outcomes that would have been different with 10 minute games.

I felt 20 minutes really made you play consistently good for a long period, and it was mentally/physically exhausting. It also gave you ample time to "figure a guy out."

10 minute games leave me wanting to see more, it just feels really short. I would "at least" like to see 15 minute games again, just IMO. I'd love 20 minute games.

Going to watch some more demos. Really out of the loop over the last 10+ years. But I definitely don't like the 10 minute thing. Too short.

So true. Guess kids can't focus no longer than 10 minutes watching a game nowadays. Players on Russian public 1v1 servers even vote regular for a time and fraglimit of 7, even when there is no queue.
Recently watched the new Mad Max movie. The action scenes/cuts are way to fast for my taste. Everyone seems to seek for fast action and no tension anymore.

I don't alias, and even back when I was playing in tournaments, I pretty much just played with my name. I did alias at times back in the day, but I pretty much stayed visible and just played.
