I second that, great card for the price! Runs all the newer games such as Metal Gear Solid and Witcher 3 (yes I know theres more taxing games and these are well optimised) no problem with an old i5.

How does it run Reflex? How much fps on bdm3 for instance?

Ultra settings over 120 FPS while looking at wall and the lowest is 37 FPS.
On Low settings it's peaking over 200 FPS.

That $645 rig you linked is basically theft. More than likely that the PSU is trash, GeForce 740 lol, HDD is probably some junk Seagate or something.

If you are in Paris or close to it or you have opportunities to go there you should never go buy anywhere else than there, its much cheaper than LDLC and other crap shops.

On a sidenote, I'm gonna copy-paste what I wrote about rigs and costs from another recent thread:

One thing you can save a lot of money on is monitor; buying a 21" high-end Trinitron / Diamondtron (CRT) gives you

-better picture quality

-basically 0 input lag
-way better color adherence

for the 1/15th of the price.

It eats more power but I guess you can live with that. Size / weight -> the desk holds it, not your shoulders.

Not to mention that the money saved this way can be spent on building the rig further and in this case, it would be quite a big impact - I mean that additional ~200-220 CAD. Bigger HDD, SSD, better VGA for example.

Back to high-end CRTs: If you have a relatively big desk, you can even buy 2. Extended desktop is really a cool thing (especially doing publishing work or programming while browsing the web etc.) and you are still at 40-120 CAD.


I really encourage you to think about this stuff without prejudice.

Take 2x4gb RAM, not 1x8gb. We can save some dollars without optical drive and with a less expensive case. Anyway it's a good start and a huge improvement from op linked PC.

2x4GB vs.1x8GB -> the difference in price (if there's any) is about 2-3 dollars (or not even that "much"). It's just stupid not buying the bigger module if you are thinking about the future.

optical drive -> 15 bucks for a Lite-On drive is just fine. He will thank me for it when it comes handy - and it will.

case -> Really, a good rig is based on a good motherboard, a good PSU and a good case. You really can't go lower than that CM which I used for the build - if you want a decent build, that is. I assume a computer for $645 (which is in the lower mid-range) should be decent.

A good case will have good airflow (very important), resulting in better cooling which is the base of longevity.
A good case will let you swap components easily and is not cramped inside. Again this is important - even if you just put a new HDD / RAM-module / VGA in it; you will feel grateful at times like those when you won't cut your fingers, you won't have to swear and everything just goes smoothly. For example, one of the best thing is removable motherboard tray - it's a god-sent feature, though it's not in the price range OP looking for.
A good case has decent space in it. Once again, easier maintanance, better airflow.
A good case has screw-less installation for optical- and hard disc drives.

This case even has 2.5" mounts inside for an SSD. How convenient is that you don't have to buy seperate mounting for it and without that, you don't have to use just 2 screws only on one side if you want to put your SSD in. This supports 3 of them.

It has built in fans and you can install one more. Again important for the sake of cooling and airflow.

It has 3 dust filters (!). Top, right side, bottom. Once again, a VERY handy add-on. Dust is the enemy of electronics. I SO want dust filters inside my case..

You can install 320 mm long VGAs easily in it. Later, this might come in handy, but it's just the result of decent space inside.

Last but not least, it's good to look at. If I spend ~$650 on a computer, I don't want to look at some garbage casing with bad airflow, no fans, tight space and sharp edges inside.

Really a bang for the buck. It's not wise to save a few dollars on SUCH AN IMPORTANT part like the case which houses your whole computer.

2x4gb is better than 1x8gb not for the money but for dual channel and 8gb of ram are enough for gaming and normal usage of a pc.
Have an Optical drive obviusly it's a personal decision, I say it because it's not the most important thing and you can don't use it to save some dollars.
Case: again it's a personal preference and the one you linked is good. I'm only saying that you can find other quite good case with less dollars: I personally buy a zalman z3 plus for 41 euro, 12 euro less than your price. And zalman z3 has 3 fans, dust filters, space for long vga (I have a r290 sapphire) and so on.

He won't really benefit that much from DC and later on, for sure he wants more RAM - in terms of that, 1x8 GB is more future-proof. You should also consider that bigger modules hold their prices better.

Totally pointless saving 15 dollars on an optical drive, one of the most basic elements. Then, when he needs it, he doesn't have any. These things come in handy.

Case: That Zalman has way less mounts inside in terms of future upgrades. On amazon, it's 65-80 dollars, while the CM N400 is stable 60, so the Zalman is a tad bit more expensive while offering less HDD mountability. If you bought it for 41 EUR, that was a lucky exception, but in general, the Zalman costs a bit more. But even if it was 8 dollars cheaper, I would still recommend the CM N400.


The best (and cheapest) thing he can do as a first step with the rig I offered him is to add additional 15 bucks (totaling ~$660) and switch the 32 GB Transcend SSD to a 120 GB Kingston V300.

32GB SSD is a pain, 64GB SSD would be a better pick imo.

But if he has about another 20 bucks for it, then ofc go with the bigger one.

This built was made to match the $645 mark using the best possible (and new) parts.

I would go for a smaller HDD and a a bigger SSD for sure, 32GB is pretty far from "totally fine", more like "barely acceptable". A cheap 120GB V300 (which is almost the worst SSD out there) is still a better choice because it can hold the OS and several favorite games as well, and you would still have free SSD space if needed (like for the Steam install folder without the games,etc).

That v300 was in the first version, but that's an additonal 15 bucks, thus exceeding the 645 limit.

Smaller than 1TB? That 1TB is basically nothing, even less than that is totally pointless. Not to mention that a half-sized HDD (500GB) is like 15 bucks cheaper.

120 GB SSD + 500 GB < 32 GB SSD + 1 TB


The best he can do is that add +15 bucks and 120 GB + 1TB.

I would choose the 120+500 combo any day:)

Hello and welcome to the year of 2015:)

- I can saturate my gigabit LAN with copying from/to my NAS, and that's good as any cheap 1-2TB HDD (but a little bit slower than the good ones indeed).....note: I should have upgraded to 10Gbit a long time ago:(.
- You can get 1Gbit connection for less than 15€ and download anything on demand, so see above.
- Having a mechanical hard drive in your PC is not only a liability, but also makes it slow and noisy. There is no redundancy, so whatever you put there must be unimportant meaning there is no point having it on a constantly spinning disk, or if it's important then HF backing up 1-2TB from a HDD on a daily/weekly basis.

Bottom line: avoid HDDs as much as you can unless your budget forces you otherwise, but even if that's the case, you should only use the lowest possible "amount".

I'm basically suffocating on 4,5TB (excluding the SSD) for months now. Will upgrade to 6,5TB tomorrow afternoon (if my order finally arrives to the local shop). You filthy casual. )

seriously though, an ssd for only the OS is a bit outdated and not future proof at all. they dont cost an insane amount anymore and 120gb for OS+programs+some games is the bare minimum for the average gamer imo.

In his case, it's still better than having none. If he's willing to spend another 15 bucks, he could buy the V300. But imo if it's SSD from a store (and not an uber-cheap one-time opportunity), I would buy only Intel, at least 530 series.
