There isn't going to be a central server where they would store all the ranking information, hence no internal ranking.

If someone comes along and creates a new qlranks or qlstats the server owners would have to configure their servers to send the match stats to those services (opt-in).

But quakelive itself is not going to have any ranking, its back to the quake 3 days in that regard.

I always was happy with the QL skill rating and was always glad it was there, having no more tiers etc will be very bad i think, a real step back...

Why can't they keep the master server that tracks matches? Do they want to release the game as is and have no more support/work to do with it afterward? Looks kind of sad after all this years playing QuakeLive.

I don't think the people behind qlranks are interested in updating it.

They would also have to start from scratch with collecting data because there is no old ql account to steam id link they could use.

Tiers, balance bots and similar skill-matching elements are getting scrapped all together.

All servers will be open to all skill levels, from first timers to veterans.

Stats will remain private unless shared with steam friends.

There is. The maximum number of friends depend on the account's level. For instance, at level 26, it's 380 friends.
But there will be a much better way than through scrapping stats on friend profiles.

Basically, the servers can configure a "stats" password. Anyone with this password can connect through zeromq and receive a stream of stats/events as they happen on the server.

As you probably know, the dedicated server binairies will be available to everyone and listen servers won't be local-only (with appropriate port forwarding). A big issue with that is trust, seeing how anyone can create the stats they want. That would be a problem with profile scrapping. It's less of a problem with the stats socket since you can select which servers you want the stats from.

An organization like QLRanks for example could have a list of trusted servers which they were provided the password for. They would be able to collect stats from those servers and work their magic to create ratings and rankings from that. iirc they weren't interested in working on QL anymore so other people might have to step in if they want that to be a reality.

I don't think you'll get anything official until the actual release (lots of QA/testing/bugfixing remaining).

There is an unfortunately fairly tight limit on friend count on steam

To create a new qlranks or qlstats the servers themselves will have to be setup to send all their data to them. Don't think there is any stats sharing over the steam friendlist but i might be wrong. So it depends entirely on the people running the servers if they want the matches on their servers to be "ranked".

this. For example I would play CTF, but half of the T4 playerbase are playing on beta servers, the other half plays pickups, and that's it. It takes hours at the evening to start a game, and it's mostly DE which runs on a potato and probably has a copper wire connection.

i'm sure all those T1 and T2 newcomers will have a great time.

This. I think we lose many hundreds of players with first release on steam because they can easily join T4 server where they get kicked after 0.1 damage ratio. I hope they will do something for this upgrade.

I doubt it would make any difference. After 90 times getting owned, i guess you kinda expect to get owned 10 more times anyways.
In addition, making it 4v3 is dumb move, if they haven't grasped it by 99 times, it's a good chance they never will.

What you could do is add a motd telling you what not to do on the server. Problem solved.

I have to say i am a bit worried about the informations people gave here in this thread, especialy the abandon of tiers and master server to collect stats as this will be terrible for Team modes. You name it namely CA but also the other team modes ofc.

I think some people (a lot?) wanted a ladder, the abandon of master server collecting stats and so the abandon of shuffle is going the opposite wait i think.

Depends how you look at it. It's not necessarily bad thing imo. Elo whoring is also problem in itself, which will be solved this way. People can focus on playing, rather than worrying if their elo will go down.

Need a ranking system which cannot be manipulated the way elo can, for some strange reason these types of features are crucial for maintaining a solid player base, with that said it makes you think do people even play because the love quake? Or because they love stats...

people love playing balanced games.... if chance to get a balanced game drops to 1/10 then 9/10 times is boring as fuck.... so yeah.. even though elo whoring is a problem i think is 10000 times less important than no elo at all

This sounds delightful, it's how quake was played when most of us began, and it sounds just delightful.

I was thinking like you before but it turns out that most people that are playing QL today never or almost never played Quake 3 online as far as i know (not counting LANs) and i don't even count the ones that actualy never played Quake 3 Arena.

Could be realy cool to have in QuakeLive the Quake 3 Singleplayer (including Team Arena expansion pack). The original Quake 3 Arena was realy good even for nowadays standards (thats the sign of a good game, its timeless) BUT the 1.32 still has some flaws, i can't even turn off kickscale when i get shot in singleplayer and the game runs by default at 15 or 20 snapshot per seconds, makes it warpy on a 144Hz monitor.
