I mean yeah, opening steam just to run QL might be a hassle, but it has more advantages than drawbacks.

No new features except some font/hud stuff, end of support forever with no mod support and no source release (meaning community can fuck off because the only things they can do is release new maps, wow!), lack of global stats (disabling qlranks, qlstats etc.), impossibility to spawn servers in several locations, because of this worse, not better pings.

Anything else?

Edit: I never used colors in /name but lol@colored names, also goodbye clantags and automatic team names on spechud.

Dunno, for some this update could mean liberation from the chains that held back QL to reach the glory - for others it means game over - in which case it would happen any time now because id was about to shut it down regardless.

So it's either shut it down, or give it to someone who might make something out of it.

Quake can't and won't die, as long as there's people with passion playing it.

It's a niche inside a niche, I enjoy it and I don't need it to be LoL/CS:GO level of popularity.

On the other hand, it's better off this way maybe.
Sure, there are a few drawbacks like you mentioned, but sponge himself said and I quote "TDM players are boring" when we talked about weapon balance. The reason why LG was nerfed was because one of the devs didn't like it. One of the devs who isn't even familiar with the competitive aspect of the game.

Claiming again, and I quote, "You can't dodge LG".

Imagine valve making AWP do half a damage so it needs two hits to kill a target because you "can't dodge it" and this sentiment would only be owned by one bloke from the company.

Don't you feel this might make QL more archaic instead? Yes it will have LAN and some Steam integration features, and I am glad about LAN even though it is too late; but to me it's looks like it's gonna end up like Q3 is.

r.i.p to all the newbies that died at the hands of donut eating vets over the years. Now the builied can take their frustrations out on the next wave of newbies in the next installment of quake. And the cycle repeats itself. That's what happens when you put all your eggs in one basket and cater to donut eating vets and ignore the new batch. You get a bunch of frustrated gamers who all end up quitting after one day and never buy into your product again. Hope it was worth it the people who led this development team. Hopefully those people will never be employed again to destroy a game that held so much promise in 2009.

So who supports the exectuble then when it doesn't launch randomly one day like it had happen to me no support could resolve shit. Not even a clean install of the app. But when I created a new account and installed standalone and not convert to steam shit works fine.

This is why I dropped this shitty game too many project management changes. Shoddy support.

fixed: hud files should be renamed to "hud", and put them in ui, change cfg inside to match the names as well.

Crouchslides are powerful as fuck but so much fun in this. You can get so much speed around corners and they arent impacted by stairs at all.

UI stuff is all nice too, hook is a blast as expected. Very impressed with what we are seeing so far

I'm kind of curious as to the way we're going to be able to follow competitions precisely now if we lose all stats about matches.

It will be impossible to know the scores of matches that won't be streamed ? It's impossible to be in all the servers and even in front of the computer 100% of the time during competitions.

Will there really be no statistics of match results at all ?

Now im not 100% about this because I haven't tried it or looked in to it to much yet.. But it looks like there will be a way for dedicated servers to share stats, and for a 3d party program to read these stats, even in ongoing games if I understood it right..

So it will probably not be to hard for someone with a bit of programming knowledge to set up a system that can recive and collect this stats and info, and from there on, one may even be able to create, a statistics part and an elo system like the one QLranks have for exanple.

So there will be a lot of possibilities in the future.

As far as servers in EU are concerned: I guarantee you many of us have prepared EU servers for the community.
Many more of us are also willing to host from our pockets.
The new QL will have many dedicated servers.

For all the rest (maps mods updates qlranks qlstats etc) I'll let time tell.

Quakelive servers are very resource hog, as a dedicated machine it may work but for not many players, official quakelive servers are xeons with 16g ram.

I don't know if there is a difference between Q3 and QL dedicated server.. but from my own experience managing root and lan servers i found quake servers to be least resource heavy compared to other games.

The biggest issue i was aware about QL servers (back in beta) was the end game choke when every damn piece of stat got saved/sent.

Looking at his specs: 4GB DDR2 1066Mhz, Q9550 should be enough handle quite a few Q3 servers and players..
I guess we will have to wait and see how QL servers behave.

We've benchmarked this. It is easily possible to run multiple servers on the configuration mentioned by PerpertualWar. It is even possible to run multiple servers on a machine with even weaker specs than those as well. I get that you want to make a scene, receive attention, and enjoy trolling everything about QL, but you should consider stopping. It is very unbecoming and you look foolish.

TBH, he probably got that very much wrong idea from the absurdly high specs the QL devs demanded the official servers to have. Since in lolsouthamerica the servers were provided by the community, then those specs are what he is familiar with

By that I mean he had a legitimate excuse for his mistake, since the only other ways for knowing that were to either have uploaded servers in Q3 (a million years ago), or have uploaded servers in the recent beta (which was private until few days ago).

And well, in any case I do agree he shouldn't always post/write/talk with such an aggressive tone. Also, it would be nice of him that in the future he doesn't spread any information based on the first source he is familiar with, as that leads to mistakes and misinforming. In the end those two defects are why we see him the way we do.

Bah what's the point of posting this. He sees everything as a personal attacks and he thinks he is always right.

At least in Q3 you could setup a toaster running Linux and encounter no issues, with a reasonable amount of servers (8). In QL the requirements for the official locations were much higher to take into account even unreasonable amounts (80), as they were centralized and players with pro accounts could spawn servers there

Alright ty. I was already hosting L4D2 dedi server with 100 tick and 500 fps but it was just for 1 server i never tried to setup more than one. IF QL is not so demending i might host 3 or more of them, my connection is optic fiber to the home, means the optical line come directly to my router in my appartment, then from router to PC it is RJ45 copper.

The dedi server for QL is located in the Tool section of steam btw? I can't seem to find it where i found L4D2 dedi server tools and SDK.

I'm not sure dedi server is public yet tbh. Considering your bandwith speed, you could definitely try hosting from home, but if it won't work, there are alternatives.

I wouldn't host from home. Better to get your own server somewhere (check cloud servers like digital ocean or amazon) for multiple reasons (bandwith, proper server setup, uptime guarantee, etc.).

Great stuff. I hope we can see at least 1 server for each european country. Specially South Europe (Italy, France, Spain, Portugal) were wages are lower, not as easy for a Quaker to invest in a dedicated server.
You are the modern day hero. Please keep supporting QL until the end of times, it's the last good game left. I hope we can see someday actual mods for the game, like cpma/osp, but id are trash that wouldn't make it open source.

I have not much of an idea and one of the cpma help files said it's basically some kinda hack, but after playing a few matches in both games anybody should notice that cpma's solution deals much better with spikes, 999, and higher ping in general. It's just better. The section "network settings" in http://cpma-news.org/guides/content/config/clientsettings goes into more details.

Thats actualy the problem i saw too with QL netcode, some players with spikes and or/warp are extremly hard to hit even on some situations where it is impossible to miss (ie: going up a jumppad etc), and when it comes to shoot them its like you drop 20% accuracy while they can still hit you.

Because the server providers in my country went bankrupt. It has been a while since you couldn't find no Paris servers, and no Spain servers or Portugal servers as well which leave me with shitty pings only. They went bankrupt and the servers just disappeared. The guys at id didn't do shit about it beyond "just wait a couple of months more so the community will launch servers on your country" of course meanwhile they will still get your money for the Pro subscription.

To address some of the questions asked above:

Imdaniel: yeah like perpetual war said you can host easily even though it is recommend to use dedicated servers which you can purchase on the internet. If you do it on your PC it is likely the ping that people will get on it will not be optimal. However, you can always give it a try.. It is easy to do.

Lolatrofloxtimers: Yeah technically we can host servers nearly anywhere we like. At the moment those willing to pay out of their pockets are mostly doing it in DE servers because that is what was most convenient for everyone in QL's current state. However I do believe more servers in different locations like France Spain Italy would be great (i myself would liie FR servers).

So technically all is possible. However financially is another issue. If we have money we can host servers anywhere. Those willing to do so at the moment are limiting it mostly to DE.

However, nothing excludes a donation system which will allow us to host more broadly over Europe.

so i was able to start a dedicated server similar to q3 methods. however, i am unsure as to whether or not there is some method by which i may decouple the dedicated server instance from my personal steam account, so that i can run a dedicated server and still use my steam account to play.

What makes you think it is so? It should be 40. I'm under the impression you joined servers and looked at /sv_fps in your console. That would only give you the value for when you create a listen server, not what the server you're connected to is running.

i spoke with sponge on the beta and he confirmed there is new netcode - GGPO.

street fighter uses it too.

i was playing with 95-110 ping and it felt.. satisfactory.

also, zurn and I did some testing the other day. you can change /sv_fps all the way to 125 but.. anything outside of setting it to /sv_fps 40 and you will have problems with rocket jumping. For instance, rocketjumping up the side of the large jump pad on overkill is not possible on anything outside of setting it to 40.

I played beta.

Gone are nicks and nick colors ( you have to mess with steam profile to add colors). So basically all olde fucktards can now play incognito (almost).

No vac atm. Ill start playing only when I read that vac is enabled. Why? Because...wait....wait...

THEY UNBANNED ALL CHEATER ACCOUNTS. ALL OF THEM.

for me this entire update looks more and more as 'cut our looses, destroy profiles and forums, unban everyone and roll out last update then go home and let this mess die by itself' scenario.

All cheaters unbanned. All hard work gone. Sure. Fuck this shit.

Anyone else find the server filter a bit lacking? I just play CA mostly nowadays and with the standalone could just select that gametype and then list by player numbers, seems more fiddly now.

Probably going to go back to FFA if theres some good classic FFA populated servers, may even buy a serve rot run as FFA/CA.

After paying for a pro subscription for a few years now I have to buy the game on steam to play it.

My friend who has never ever paid for a subscription but added the game on steam when it got released on steam has the game for free and doesn't need to pay a penny.

If I were butthurt I'd be doing my best to get QL to work and contact the support.
But actually I'm not even bothered, too much hassle.

The game has even less players on steam now that the game launcher is dead than when it was released on steam last year. It's a sinking ship.
