However if they do it as DLC then that DLC doesn't have to fall under the same rating, but it can't be free as any minor could get it then.

QL was supposed to be sustained by ads in the first place and apparently having a M rating would have reduced the ad possibilities/revenues a whole lot. It turns out it wasn't enough even with a T rating though. I don't know if the game was flowing with as much money as you make it seem when it was released with the subscription model instead though.

Such things are civil matters, not really a question of legal/illegal. I think it's quite unlikely any random q3 map maker is going to muster the legal resources to bring a lawsuit, but that could easily be avoided anyway. Just remake the 'copyrighted' map using different textures, different architectural features, and with some adjusted dimensions.

You are right, of course... I doubt anybody would sue an individual for such a reason. Now the workshop gives this opportunity. It's just a matter of if the uploaders think what they're doing is moral or not.
But before the workshop, the responsibility would have been on a corporation's shoulders. I have no doubt that at least one map author would have gone on the offensive (and won). In any case, it would have been quite disrespectful. "Hey look guys, we're gonna take all of your hard work and make money with it. You won't have anything though. Cool huh?"

Tbh not everyone is trying to be a pro player. for some of us quake was awesome because of these very features. I remember seeing my brother play it and eventually getting to play myself and thinking how cool it was that people explode in the smithereens!

I know you probably can't say all that much about company policies and true motives behind some moves, and I suppose that rating Q as teen was supposed to introduce it to a broader audience.

You had your reasons (censorship, market rules, company strategy for this product, ESRB etc) so you did what you could. What I wrote above is more like expression of sadness that this game HAD to be sweetened and toned down at all - whether that helped anything or not is something that only you and your team knows.

IMHO - totally seriously - gibs or no gibs make no difference. The same goes for TEEN rating and demonic/satanic iamgery. It was all just a setting for the game, it's not that absence of pentagrams or demon heads causes you to drop %s of accuracy. Also, gibs in Q were sometimes a hindrance, what with that spray of blood and entrails blocking the view. It looks cool in Wolfcam but all that matters ingame is YOU FRAGGED<INSERT NAME OF SOME POOR SCHMUCK HERE>. Rest is cosmetics.

Anyway, thanks for the update. Maybe this game will gain momentum now - what I wish both for you and for me. I know this project is more or less sidelined but I guess it would be still nice if that last QL overhaul have turned out to be a direct hit instead of minor splash damage, so to to speak.

Day one of what? I personally requested gibs as an extra downloadable, paid for, age-confirmed addon like 3-4 years ago on the quakelive forum. I said I would gladly pay for it, and that I don't understand why there would be an age issue if the addon itself had a separate legal agreement to it, and it would be client-side anyway. I was replied to, that gibs will never be added to quakelive, without any further discussion, because legal age/rating reasons.
