I got into the beta, gave it a fair shot, and care nothing for it. Fans of MOBA might enjoy it. Fans of TF2 might enjoy it. If you're looking for traditional FPS, look elsewhere. It is essentially a first-person MOBA and not an FPS at all.

Addressing what has been brought up here, yes, it is smooth. The mouse input, however, is not as there is built in acceleration. Weapons take up 20% of the screen. Yes, it mostly is a clusterfuck of spam. Yes, it is too easy. Yes, it is a marketing beta and not random at all. To me, yes, the game is terrible.

The only class in the game that looks interesting to play is tracer imo, I haven't seen a similar class in any FPS game(2GD did talk about a 'timewarp' ability in Reborn though).
Widowmaker might have been fun if the hook didn't have a long cd.

What I really don't like is the many overpowered ultis that are basically 'click a button and get 2-5 kills, install wallhack for your team or be immortal', not much skill in those. Bastion looks like a completely braindead character, find a good spot and camp, not fun to play and not fun to play against. Unlimited ammo means there's no downside to just spamming a lot of the time.

I wouldn't be surprised if the game becomes very popular. When I tried LoL I thought 'how can anyone prefer this to Dota'. Well it turns out a lot of people prefer a dumbed down game where you have to pay to unlock characters.

Besides they "were big" when there still was a very active quake scene. When shootmania came out quake was not that active anymore... I even did a bit of shitmania but I couldn't find enough enjoyment out of it.

Then it was followed by a time where some quake guys would switch over, get bored, leave... And then that was followed by some quake guys switching over, being hated by the community for aimwhoring, and they left the game.
Resulting in a scene which was almost as bad as LoL is nowadays... Which nobody would want to play in :p

Yeah sure :D they found Cs and Cod too boring to play, yet Shootmania was apparently exciting enough to push most of the top players to play it in a heartbeat.

The reality is that every quake player is just average or good at most in the other competitive games, they have no chance to reach the top. That's why they all jumped ship immediately with shootmania, because even if it was inferior to cs and cod and dota etc in any way, it was arcade enough and similar enough to for them to actually have a chance in it.

Rapha tried dota, got owned. Cypher plays counterstrike, he's a nobody in it.

The answer is somewhere in between the 2 posts above. Most Quake players dont line up with the pacing and gameplay style of CS. Its not that they lack the skill, but rather lacking the interest/patience/discipline to reach the top of games like these. Shootmania is the closest to quake when it comes to gameplay, making it an easy first choice to try it out.

Also, you dont try dota and instantly be amazing at it. Its a game where it takes time to memorize every interaction between characters, their item builds, and peoples general behavior on each skill level. You know, aside from being a completely different type of game...

Let's leave it at that, then. But i personally don't believe even people like Cypher have enough reflexes and hand-eye coordination to deal with the tops. And it would be logical, smaller pools of people usually produce smaller talents than much bigger ones.

Whatever, maybe in the future, if quake keeps shrinking in popularity and tournaments, all quakers will jump ships fully, and we'll be more able to assert their place in other games. Let's wait, then.

CoD is admittedly pretty bad.

CS takes as much mechanical skill with the subtleties in the movement in order to accurately fire. No Quake player seems to want to mention that, but CS is a pretty difficult game versus good CS players (just like Quake is against experienced players). CS was dominated by Quake players.. when? Wombat days? I don't think a single professional Quake player past 2001? 2002? 2003? was ever in a top tier team, let alone a stand out and amazing player.

like I said, the people that didn't cut it in Q3 went on to CS.

Most top players in Q3 stayed in Q3 when it was still active (for instance in 2002 Q3 was still very much alive and kicking).
After that some tried to switch but had a lot of negative emotions from the CS community (duh it was filled with people who got raped in quake and left... they aren't going to welcome someone who stood on top of the ones they got raped by).

There's a couple of things which make me severely dislike overwatch:

- The fact that the matches involve a pre-game moba style "lobby" where the 6 available slots need to be filled up before the match can begin tells me everything I need to know about how blizzard thinks an FPS should be.

- Similarly, the inability to jump onto a server, whether it's for filling in an empty slot or just spectating. (Although it's still in beta... I somehow doubt they will implement this).

- There are way too many hero classes and despite their aesthetic differences they mostly have the same appallingly slow and clunky movement.

- Inability to change the FOV. Feels like it's stuck at 90-95 and apparently there is no intention to make this adjustable. Combined with the movement it's just.... uhg.

And for everyone saying OW is gonna be big... Heroes of the Storm is dead already... so I have my doubts blizz will make their "Heroes of the Storm: FPS edition" any more successful. I mean, TF2 was inherently fun and casual by nature. Sure, OW is fun for a laff but it is also inherently casual by nature, so I don't see how a big competitive esports scene can sustain itself after the initial excitement dies down.

Still early days thought... time will tell innit.

Yeah, OW is guilty on all counts for not being a quake - the movement, the fov, the overall toyish "WEEEEEEEEEEEEE!" atmosphere. I would myself prefer Quake 5 made with the resources of Blizzard.

Besides all of that, the interaction of different classes is fun.

What bothers me - apart from not being a Q5 - is that strange system of OW, uniting Quake respawn system and CS rounds. And everytime you die, you could change a class.

To my mind it adds this "random bullshit clusterfuck spawnfest" flavour to the play. Sure it was made so the millions of casuals wont feel bad after dying and having to watch entire round as a spectator, but as the result everything you do feels kinda unnecessary if you're doing good and reversible if you're not. Almost every game feels like it has the same meaning and tense as joining random FFA server in QL in the middle of the match.

TBH I would certainly not want Blizzard to have anything to do with Quake. Valve, sure. Blizzard, no way.

Blizzard has made bland looking, run of the mill bullshit games for the last 10 years. Obviously it has been a huge success money wise for them, but all of their "new" games (basicly everything after Broodwar) have been huge sell out pieces of crap. I'm not blaming them for anything, it's their right to make games for big payouts, but if they tried to do Quake it wouldnt be anything like we would want. Bland graphics, shitty cartoon style, no depth, everyone's equal etc. And that's fine, their demographic is completely different.

Valve on the other hand has made with CS:GO what id should have done with Quake to begin with. Bring the old gameplay mainly intact to a new platform with modern monetizing. id on the other hand totally failed, trying to bring new gameplay elements for Quake and use an ancient platform with a ridiuclously stupid approach to monetizing it. A total fucking disaster.

Honestly, there is nothing anyone can do make quake 3 big again. The Quake 3 playerbase started slowly declining not long after it got released while CS has always just been growing. Not strange that CS:Go would be a hit and that quake live would fail. Just face it, the gameplay Quake 3 is offering is just not suited for todays market.

What? His point was not about the playerbase but that the gameplay itself is not suited for today's market and there's no way Quake could be big again. As we can see from the numbers at both initial and Steam release, people are interested. It's just an old game on an old platform, that's why it doesnt last. We have loads of examples where the very same gameplay can be revitalized by simply releasing a new version of the game with slightly updated graphics and some minute changes. The problem with Quake is that id doesnt give a shit about anything related to it. The only thing that has mattered to them is the graphical development for Carmack and the gameplay for Romero in the early days. Rest of it seem like it's almost unwelcome to them. To make Quake popular you _need_ a modern platform. Can you fucking imagine, a friendslist was innovative for id when it comes to QuakeLive. What a fucking joke.

Also, as we can see from previous games and Overwatch now, the biggest thing that matters is marketing, hype and the support of the developer. Obviously a truly one dimensional and shit game like Shootmania wont succeed. The hype, the tournaments etc. bring in interest and then you have the hook (in CS:GO's case its the skins and modern platform) for the casuals to get addicted.

Brand new graphics, buyable skins, modern platform, developer investing 1-2 millions for prizemoney in the following 2 years guaranteed, paying every popular streamer at release etc. Yeah, no chance it could ever be popular....

Haha alright that was a stupid statement indeed :) but my point is that CS was immensely more popular then Quake, CS made gaming mainstream i would say, it was hard to find Quake 3 players when i was on lans while CS was everywhere. As CS became and more popular Q3 slowly died a little each year the arcade shooter area was over and Tactical shooters such as CS, COD and BF was upon us.

So, CS actually had something big to revive, Q3 really doesn't. CS has something that mainstream like, Q3 isn't really that.

Sure new GFX and nice features would sure attract and keep some but the Qauke 3 biggest flaw is the outdated gameplay, it wont be the new LOL :)

There are much more aspects in which humans can compete, like tactics and strategy. This game has this: fluidly adapting your team hero composition to that of the adversaries is really important, as is ult timing and whatnot.

I agree it's skill ceiling is lower than that of Quake, which also has lots of strategic depth, but it's not non-existant. And on what bases are people claiming it's "easy"? There are so many restrictions you need to know if you can be aggresive or you can't be aggresive.
You simply can't jump on farmed champ and plasma him with 50% accuracy.
If there is tense situation it's because two guys are equally strong and then you observe who shits all the cooldowns faster and pray not to die first.

I do agree that dota2 is a rediculously knowledge intensive game with tons of exceptions to every rule, is it 6 or 7 different damagetypes, can this or that slow/silence/disable be dispelled, can this or that item without a recepie be dismantled? and so on. I played the game this last year in wait for overwatch. I wouldn't put overwatch in the same category though. It just isn't as complex.

Knowing all the spawns (player, armor, weapons, health, powerups) and timings is important in AFPS.

The knowledge required to play quake is relatively small. Maps, item locations and player spawns on these maps, the 120 values for mega & red for every second (e.g. 43 -> 08 or 18) and weapon behaviour. That's all "hard" knowledge required, an amount that is dwarved by pretty much any other competitively played game.

only way it can happen is when both will have equally shit conditions (>200ms ping)

The infamous "netcode" could very well work better than QL's, which probably isn't anything special. But it doesn't work better simply because of a "better netcode". The slower things go, the better the results. Overwatch isn't the slowest game ever, but it obviously isn't Quake. It's also most likely client authoritative, which has its own drawbacks such as players being shot while they were already under cover in their own screen or the reduced ability to dodge (which probably doesn't ammount to much in this game). Basically, it wouldn't necesserily work just as well in Q3A, CPMA, QL, Reflex, etc.

2gd has in-house developers and artists in the studio, that work on it (I think) full-time now. So at this point it might already be, or is close to, being too late to not finish it. With, you know, money being invested in it and stuff. So I am looking forward to playing a nice beta sometime soon.
