I heard that too, and I wish I could test it, but how do we know which servers don't have VAC enabled? I don't see any special icon to indicate what is or isn't VAC. And the filters only allow showing servers that do have VAC, or all servers; not only the ones that don't.

I'm not sure. Maybe Predathor's browser allows you to search for them? Alternatively you could ask a friend to spawn one for you. It can even be a listen server; it doesn't matter.

That's not what it means.
It mean's it's failed to be able to run it's checks.
Very common for Rust players to report this problem for some reason it seems, having Googled it.

All I can think to suggest anyone that gets this is reinstall Steam, and make sure that 'Steam Client Service' is running in your windows services.

I had this shit for few times already. And I have played just ~10 duels.. But My connection sometimes gets offline for 2-3 seconds. I get these 2-3 sec lags in csgo too, but no problem with VAC ever.

get same, server disconnected for unknown reason. reinstalled steam, quakelive, netwwork adapter, stopped backround services, nothing works. only variation was when i tried to change in console cl_downloadcounts to some bigger random number, then i could connect to a server for a few seconds before getting error 9, after that the old error reappeared

Some dude on a server told me the other day, that sponge told him, that this is not a Quake issue, but a Steam (VAC) issue.

Which is stupid, yes, but he supposedly said so, and I'm just throwing it out there... Meanwhile Quake keeps throwing me. Out of servers.

No, the authentication one. Honestly I don't really get the OP, because I don't understand when the authentication occurs, and when the unknown one occurs, but the authentication one is SUPPOSEDLY Steam's fault.

so has anybody found a fix for this yet?
It's really annoying..i keep crashing and disconnecting almost every game because of the "failed to authenticate with steam" error.

I've already tried reinstalling steam and QL..i even had to reinstall Win7 again (for other reasons) but i still keep getting the error.

I fixed this error. First, delete "steamid" folder in quakelive folder (before do it save you config). Next you need to disable synchronization with steam cloud. Right click mouse on quakelive in steam and unchecked steam cloud. After you can return back you config.

I wonder how you got that folder then, because I've never had one.

I'd definitely disable the steam cloud, but I don't believe everyone having these problems hasn't.

Run the game as Administrator
----------------------
To run the game as an Administrator:
1. Right click the game in your Steam Library.

Doesn't fix it for me.
I've got the same reponse from bethesda support on the "disconnected from server for unknown reason" issue the other day.
When I told them that nothing of the mentioned solutions worked for me their final response was:

"It's not quite an issue with your internet, just with the Quake Live servers having an old network and may have problems with connecting. Since it's an old game

Thank you for your continued interest and support!"

So still no quake live for me.
