id software should be paying me to play this game and not the other way around. ever since full blown steam this game has turned into complete trash. and where's my compensation for the reminder of my pro-service that i no longer have.

Explain yourself please. Since the game itself has not changed that much.. just a couple of things for the better though, in my opinion.. I'm curious to what negative changes you have experienced?

The game is full of poorly run servers, including servers with absurd 24 or 32 player limits, PC hosted servers, misconfigured servers, servers on shitty hosts, etc. The client and the dedicated server software have a number of new bugs that weren't there before. The player count has declined significantly due to the surprise $10 fee, and presumably the poor experience many people have had with many of the popular servers. FFA is pretty much dead after the reversion to "classic", and CA is no longer balanced or competitive (except for pugs) since there's no skill matching or team balancing.

NA= 200 ping South americans and euro's, or wifi canadians lagging everywhere.

Anyway I recently logged into a NA server and I can concur that it was a piece of shit in terms of host quality despite me having a 15 ping.

For reasons that no one has ever been able to pin down, certain players with certain gpu/cpu combinations (or other hardware factors) aren't able to get stable fps on some maps (asylum, corrosion, quarantine come to mind). Fortunately I don't have this problem. However, some maps are so poorly constructed that no one can get stable fps, namely the abomination called Arkinholm.

QL Standalone certainly lost more players than QL Steam gained during the switch.

Do you know if Quake 2 + mission packs work without steam after activating the key (through a VPN, thanks Germany)?

I am not sure, if i go offline on steam and i doubleclick on quake2.exe it pops steam up, same for expansion packs, sorry germany.

That's a pity, hopefully I can get it working with Yamagi Quake II.

Well it will not run for me after I upgraded to Windows 10. Mine is a Steam install as well.

I would think you should look at verifying your game files, resetting your cfg, checking video card drivers... the usual really.

I'm using a laptop atm so it popped up running on integrated Intel HD gfx at first, but I quit, swapped it to the nvidia 430m in display properties and it runs fine on that too.

My CPU is Intel(r) Core(TM)i7-4700Q @ 2.40 ghz
My GPU is a GeForce GT 740m. Drivers up to date.
I have also tried running it with on board graphics. I have deleted local content, deleted the entire folder and did a fresh install. Still will not run.

It ran fine on Windows 8 and the only change in my system was upgrading to Windows 10.

Tried in compatibility mode for vista, XP, windows 7 and windows 8. No go.

I have looked online at a list of compatible games for Windows 10 and it is listed as playable. There are some issues with certain resolutions at full screen but it should work. That being said the same list said Quake 3 Arena was unplayable because of display issues but it works just fine so I dunno WTF I just want to play some Quake 2

I've never had older Quake games on steam before, but I'd check steam cloud was disabled for it, because i guess that could be making it replace any deleted cfg's with cloud backups before the game loads.

Okay, I am not sure what you mean by the cloud thing, but I cannot find any log files anywhere. What would be the extension of the file? "log" ?

When I click the play button on Steam, the screen goes black for a second and then crashes back to my desktop saying " Quake 2 exe has stopped working and windows is searching for a solution to the problem". Which by the way it obviously hasn't found. *sigh*

Mission packs give the same results which I guess they would since its essentially the same game. So, I dunno. I maybe a PC fps game freak but I am not to savvy on the inner workings of it all.

I would love to see what would happen if I did a disc install but alas I am working 3000 miles away from my home, so that is not an option. But like I said earlier, the game, and mission packs worked fine before I did the Windows 10 upgrade.

right click the game in steam -> properties -> updates tab _> untick the steam cloud option at the bottom.

then rename autoexec.cfg so it doesn't get called and also config.cfg from the 'baseq2' dir


it may also be an idea to remove pvrgl.dll and 3dfxgl.dll in the main 'quake2' dir.

There should not be a any file containing the word 'opengl' in there at all such as 'opengl32.dll'.

that should leave it with default settings and if it was calling the wrong gl driver for some reason it wouldn't be able to, so i'd hope it would either work or complain about a missing file.

The only option in the error message is a "close program" button.

I unticked the cloud option. There was no autoexec. Renamed the config file and removed the files you mentioned and voila, it ran, but in software mode only. Then part way into the first level it crapped out like before.

So I dunno wtf. It ran fine on this system in the past.

Start it, immediately go to 'Video' section on the menu, change it from software to 'default openGL'

Either have vsync turned on, or in the console ensure that 'cl_maxfps' is a sensible figure like 90 (I can't remember the good values for physics in Q2 any more, sorry)
Having that at 0 will lock up the game.


If that doesn't keep it playable, at that point it's probably best to get one of the 3rd party quake2 exe's you can use, some mentioned here, as they've had years of bug fixes that the original client hasn't, they'll work with the steam version, they just need the data files that that installed.

I deleted everything to do with Quake2. Files folders everything. Did a fresh download and installed the v3.24 patch like you suggested and it finally worked. Thank you very much for your help.
