You don't need to recompile the maps to convert them to QL.

Since the latest update the old Q3 map format is now unsupported. Some might still work, but recompiling is a good idea.

I haven't tested with the latest update but I doubt it requires full recompiling.

You have to do q3map.exe -game quake3 -convert -format quakelive x.bsp now, but some maps will still be broken (cos1_beta7b for example) after you do it, so you'll need to manually fix them and recompile.

Since it's defrag maps, it's recommended to edit and recompile them anyway, since the race_point entities are missing and you need to add them.

You need to recompile them if you decide to actually make them useful in Race gametype, because you have to add race_points. Old defrag triggers don't work in QL.

You can add those entities without fully recompiling, you just can't remove the old ones.

How?

-format quakelive is a feature from q3map2/GtkRadiant 1.6, and doesn't exist in older versions, which can still make maps for Quake Live. All you need are the entity names - there are no substantial enough changes that a map can't be made for Quake 3 and changed over.

All you need is to decompile the map (-convert -format map), add the entities, and compile with -onlyents. This will update all the entities in the map (replaces all entities in the BSP with the ones from the .map, which will make changes on existing entities and add new non brush-based entities). It also should work with advertisements but I'm not so sure about that one. Point entities, such as flags, weapons, and targets, will work 100% fine without a full recompile.

No problem. I use it a lot, for QL-to-Q3 conversions, and for testing my own maps because it compiles faster this way.

iirc localhost can play any, but if you want to run them on a server they need modifying slightly at the least.

This is incorrect. Even loading maps in single player, the Q3 map format isn't supported any more. Some work, some don't.

It might get treated differently on servers, but it's definitely not just open for offline.

Try using all the jump pads in the freestyle room, some of them crash QL and need to be fixed. Then when you fix everything, the lights leak. So no, cos1 doesn't work fine for you.

There are errors in the "target_push" entities - Some of them have not got "spawnflags" "1" set. This means that they try to use the jumppad sound rather than the bouncepad sound. The crash suggests that the sound is missing, but it seems to be ok. In any case, just editing the entities fixes the problem.

Well, bot support will work for some if you fix them (http://www.quake3world.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=51522) but for some you'll get an error and there's nothing you can do AFAIK.

Dont try to lead the maps with the UI, its buggy. Use the console instead. Google LORFA QL for every command. I think its simply "map blabla"
