I have an Nvidia GTX 670 on my main rig and obviously QL is running fine, but in the second rig I have an old AMD HD 5850 (much less powerful than this 380) and it can make run QL stable at 125 fps or more


There is definitely something wrong in your situtation, I would have said VSYNC, but it cannot be, cause you would be capped at 60 fps, not at 20-40

my 7870 speaks opengl well enough, soon getting nvidia tho, time to upgrade :))

LOL. While I agree nvidia is currently superior and has been for a few years, there's just no excuse for the inefficiency of Quake Live. It's completely ridiculous. I'm fortunate to have a gtx970 and cpu/mobo combination that plays nicely with QL, but I know a lot of people who have all kinds of problems with fps dips on powerful, well configured rigs.

Their latest drivers capped the fan speed to 20%.

Ughhghg thank you so much. This was the only thing that worked. I tried everything I could think of and find. Changed this one setting and FPS went to an instant and stable 125 (my maxfps), with only 12% load on my GPU ram.

Yeah I've read a little about it but tbh I don't understand. Most things I'm ok, but opengl coding is a little out of my reach for now. I don't have time to learn it. I have a gtx 780, i7 4790k and getting FPS drops now and then in QL? I have com_idlesleep 0 but nothing else seems to help :S Would setting primitives to 1 or 2 help my FPS on nvidia?

I have vertex 2, dynamic lights on, picmip 4, enablepostprocess 0. Surely I should be able to have dynamic lights (you can see the glow from flags in CTF) with my PC? I have postprocess and lightmap off to try and compensate already...

no idea then. I have stable 250 with my 780 + i3 4170. Hell I had stable 250 on 4770K with integrated GPU. Try putting ur card into high performance mode and disable all power savings. Though it only narrowed the FPS ditribution margine for me, never could actually "feel" it.

Welcome to ATI where benchmarks and real life performance are not comparable at all because they have Zhu making drivers when he's not busy making videos.

AMD / ATI is highly DirectX optimized when non nvidia gameworks is used ... see here for example

Mostly the renaming of the .exe would trick the drivers "optimations"

Most likely your video card don't bump the freq and stays in idle clocks. ;)

i don't know where you get ur information, or do you game mostly on consoles ?

since years it is clear AMD / ATI has more performence on DirectX, even on the APU ...

and with AMD's lower nano builds they are comming back big time ... maybe Intel too, they have a APU for super computing :D

both nvidia and amd drivers are horrible. the old ati driver used to be good.

On the second hand market Nvidia is dominating as well where you can pick a similar or better card cheaper than the equivalent of ATI

Fallout 4 uses Nvidia GameWorks, so it's one of the games which supposed to run better on Nvidia hardware (Yes some games run better on AMD).
Try disabling stuff and see which gives you the biggest fps boost. There are also some performance mods which can help if you are not that tech savy or not in the mood of messing with the settings.

I'm guessing this might have something to do with it being stuck in idle power mode. RadeonPro should let you run at full clocks with QL.

i bought a high end ATI GPU once, driver would not even want to instal. Got refunded and took... an NVIDIA card. It died every 6 months but the drivers from nvidia are much better, i have a gtx 680 since years and i might upgrad to a gtx 970 sometime soon.

I have an old ATI card and on that card the colors are not the same, for ex crosshair 3 has a wierd ultra faded big circle around it... does it shows details nvidia cards can't? Some pretend ATI cards have better image / color quality. No idea about that.

have you checked the gpu and mem frequencies while running ql? i dare to assume it likely stays in some way underclocked idle mode because the game barely generates any workload on the card :D

Force your clock speed. It's running in power save mode because QL is a joke for it.

i was asked yesterday, what is diff about Quake3Arena & QL from OpenArena :D

I asked why he would play OA on Win7 insted of QL.

My only aswer was, QL has now spectator zooming wich is quite new and was never done before :DDDD
