it depends on the game, GPU is more important than CPU, but in some games it can make the difference

Depends at which resolution he plays also. If he want 4k he need a lot of GPU and CPU power.

I don't think Photoshop cares that much about the CPU, more about GPU and ram and all those cores is only really needed for rendering/simulation when it comes to 3D and i only animate. But sure, maybe its worth it anyway.

1fps - 980 is a LOT more than enough for ANY game nowdays and coming titles and that on stock.. with OC to 4GHz+ will be perfect. No point moving to the newer one.

Dude , maxwell is the slowest renderer of all time , no wonder it took you ages .

Arnold has as good quality, more flexible, easer, and like 4 times faster . But expensive, but there are other renderers that gives almost as good quality to a much cheaper price then arnold, and no, no maxwell.

So yes for smaller projects GPU rendering does really well, but bigass projects memory can be an issue . And the thing that is amazing for gpu rendering, is that you can use something like a biased rendering option, making it less realistic of a rendering, and it is insanely fast, and with ligthing/several passes etc you can get almost as good looking images.

So If you ever have to use CPU rendering again on some big projects , just do not use maxwell ;)

as for your actual question : 3930k will give you nice boost in some games, and less in some games . 3930k single core performance is faster so basically everything will be definety faster .
3D viewports(all viewports basically) , games . Uses basically only 1-2 cores useally

Only times you actually use all the cores of a computer is when rendering etc . (however dx12 can be interesting, rumor has it it will use more cores more efficiently for games)

3930k , yes better, but not that much . If you could have the i7 980 at home with good gpu, compared to using the 3930k machine at work for gaming, then i would definetly just use the i7 980 at home, not enough gainz to justify gaming at work.

Yeah Maxwell is slow, thats why we had a big farm :)
Arnold/vray/renderman is good and flexible but for realistic stuff nothing beats unbaised renders like maxwell.

Arnold is easier then maxwell? in what way? i don't shade stuff but as far as i know Maxwell is pretty easy, light react like light should, glass gets refractions and so on, everything is just ON since its unbiased, nothing is faked, just brute force. but its very expensive.

So far Octane has worked great, we have a pretty good computers for it with 2 Titans on SLI ect. even if that would be enough it can tap in to the ram if it needs to as far i know.

We've been using Maxwell since 2009 i think, GPU based renders is the future however and so is unbiased rendering in our opinion.

Anyway, This is not for work, this would be my home/gaming computer.
My problem is that i don't know how to install an SSD drive, i would also have to move my other normal HD aswell. So it would be a hassle for me. but i guess its worth it maybe then.

its all in 1 cuda modeller and renderer, cuda cores push the model around when your rendering, otherwide a 40,000 poly model would still take 30 minutes to rotate on a desktop computer

you just have to figre out if you have to screw it with short little screws 3mm i think or with the big ones like from HDD's screws 5mm

i7 980 is more exclusive and better for rendering on the CPU.
3770k is a bit better for games as its newer, has on board gfx (for what it worth) and you might get one or two extra graphic features in games on some silly effect you don't care about.

I would get the one which is less hassle, there isn't a big deal between either.

Not convinced octane will beat maxwell for quality in area like dielectrics, but the difference might be negligible and the speed might be huge. So still worth it.

I'm gonna boss all this shit next year with some way cooler.

Yeah, but intel have been pretty stingy with the updates ever since, they are still very good and very close to the newer models.

In reality, even though the branding suggests third gen, the 3930 is only a Sandy Bridge, the very next generation after your 980. And none of the socket 1366/2011 CPUs have a built-in GPU.


In short: both are the same family (almost Xeon, marketed as a high-end i7), the technology is just few months apart (and both are 32nm litography) and the only real speed difference between them is:
1. higher turbo frequency on the 3930 (3,8 vs 3,6)
2. more cores can keep turbo under load (you can have 3 cores at highest frequency, instead of 1)

So performance in actual workload benchmarks tends to be around 5-10% faster due to the faster single-core turbo. Definitely measurable, but not a big deal.

But for synthetic benchmarks of multi-threaded CPU number crunching, the 3930 appears a lot faster - 25-30%. Appears - because you will NEVER see that difference, and especially in games.

Remember - even new games are written for laptop noobs who usually have 2 cores that throttle like crazy under load. The games have no use for your 6 cores with each one having twice the computational power.

Having said all that, I'd still get that newer one for the once-a-year big code compile ;)

Hey Lam, Thanks for the info. I'll guess ill do the switch, not that i would ever compile anything though. I only play games and sometime work with Maya from home.
Ever since i got the SSD i now and then get a blue screen and when i reboot my computer can't find the SSD so i have to turn it off for a while and then boot again in order for the SSD to work. i'm hoping a switch to the new computer will resolve that.
On a different note, whats turbo frequency? is that something you can turn on in an easy way when you play games?

It's on by default, you don't have to do anything and yes, it helps single-threaded stuff like Quake.

Having "turbo" is just a way of keeping the CPU from overheating. There's a guaranteed speed that all your cores can work at at the same time, but if you're playing QL and you have 5 idle cores and 1 is 100% saturated, the only busy core can work significantly faster and still not overheat the package. And in the case of the 3930, 3 of those can work at maximum speed, which is awesome.

So it's basically like preemptive throttling, but sold under a name that goes better with customers (everyone wants to have turbo, no? :))
