I certainly agree. I classify games by type into five categories: FPS, RPG, RTS, Sports, and other. In that order.
Single-player or multi-player also divides them; and I think you are mainly talking single-player.

There are four main things that cause design-failure in modern games. Money. Games are made for money. To maximize that they add flash with little substance. Game designers want to keep casual gamers constantly entertained, so details and many gaming fundamentals are neglected in favor of "awards" and flash. This is why modern games are too easy and the games constantly assist and direct you. Everyone plays games. Games used to be made by gaming nerds for gaming nerds. But today, everyone plays games from 2 year olds to grandmothers. The slice of the market(and thus the revenue) from the "real", hardcore gamers(like many of the folks on this site) is too small to design a game for. This is why Half-life2 and Diablo3 were a faint shadow of their predecessor games and completely sucked IMNSHO. Multi-player design, computer processing speed, networking speed. Because there are so many gamers now, games are designed almost solely with multi-player in mind. I like multi-player games almost as much as the next guy, but outside of RTS gaming, no one gets lifetime-passionate about any multi-player game. Games are designed for modern computers and in order to push the "flash" of the game, they are forced to railroad modern FPS and RPG games into linear/cut-scene-driven drivel. Additionally, games are "managed" by online servers, like Steam or Origin, which de-value the games into temporary distractions instead of anything permanent. If you are a game designer, there is no value in putting lasting quality into a game like Fallout4 that will essentially "disappear" in 1 to 2 years.

For you and me, the main problem is that we are too small of a market share to bother with. McDonalds restuarants changed the recipe for french fries(and nearly every other product that built their restuarant into the worldwide chain it is today) and I stopped eating them because they are so much worse than they used to be. McDonalds doesn't miss or care about my $40/year they don't receive. Zenimax, Sony, Valve, etc... they don't miss or care about my $100 a year. They are happy making millions off the casual gamers. Don't give a shot about us.

I wouldn't mind so much if modern games didn't lack the breadth of design for the processing power that computers have today. Skyrim is pretty, but it is Oblivion with a new coat of paint... and Oblivion is more casual gamers Morrowind. Quakelive is essentially a shiny Quake without the single-player, the atmosphere, the modding ability, and level of gameplay. I have yet to find a RPG that is more than paper-thin immersive. They just don't spend the effort to detail a game that much. DeusEx is an amazing game for its day. DeusEx Human Revolution isn't a bad game, but it is LESS complex and detailed! Why?! Oh, because the 4 things I mentioned above. Sad.

Quake4 was the last FPS game that was worth buying(or playing), IMO. Although, Battlefield and some of COD games have value if you are into multi-player. Supreme Commander2(and I assume the other modern RTS games like DOTA2) are certainly quality if you like that type of game. I haven't had Steam installed since 2003. Mainly because there isn't a single game on there that is worth my time(or me bending over to allow steam to do its business). I've played through many modern games, but the MOST recent game I regularly play is Quake3.... from 2001.

Nothing new is being made, nearly, it's rehashes and variations.

Games don't want to be games anymore, nearly, they rather be movies/"experiences".

This is good in one way at least, if bad in most others. Replay older games instead. Your time is better spent replaying older, better, games, 3 and 4 and 5 times, than 5 forgettable ones played once.

I think mostly it's because a lot of newer games that are being developed only have casual gamers in mind and soley exclude hardcore gamers. That's why a lot say single player games that you play now are super easy to complete; with things like health regen, objective pointers and overpowered weaponary make most newer games appear stale and lack any sort of replay value.

The only games I've really enjoyed sinking my time into recently are games like Dark Souls, the Mass Effect series etc as these games not only challenge you mentally and physically but they're incredibly well made games which focus a lot of their attention on the single player side of things and the attention to detail is simply astounding.

Yes. Still players around + quite a lot of servers out there. The game itself runs better, but it doesnt feel so centralized as before. Btw, qlstats.net the new qlranks. If I exclude the dark theme it's quite ok, but I do still miss the "feel" of the old ql and I do think some good players left.

You've soaked up the game mechanics these "new" games offer you years ago, cept they dumb them down now to appease to the lack of work ethnic modern gamers have grown up with.

So if you're a fucking street fighter genius like me, some cunt can still give you a close game with half your talent in street fighter 666th turbo edition cos they have like 50 million matchups you need to learn and an ultra bar which builds up for losing, so if someone takes 30 seconds to chip you of 40% health using skill, just land that one ultra and you're back in the game and with the number of matchups, there's a good chance of doing just that to all but the hardcores, who are usually hispanic bums on the west coast with knee length white socks and ankle length khaki shorts and 200 dollar 'kicks' who drive a nos boosted,ghetto ass civic and get by on welfare & petty crime, or some negr0 from the bronx who thinks he's a fucking rapper with no car, food stamps & plays Ma$e on the fucking mic ruining your already ruined game.

Either way, be grateful for the memories and don't be in a hurry to overwrite them with the modern day equiv!

I'll get it on steam in FEB. I see they changed my zangief quite a bit so will have to play it just for him.

I can't play with any intention any more though, its literally jump on for a few games every couple of weeks and leave it for a few weeks or months.
I'm much closer to a casual player now though, who peaks vs old match ups I know.

But I don't have a clue how to stop half the shit in the game. its overwhelming unless you live it and I can't do that anymore, best of all I don't want to!

Not just games, but I'm getting tired of rebooting shit in general. Movies, games, whatever. Imagine if musicians, every time they get new equipment, or a new/different band member, etc. they remake their old songs instead of new ones.

Most games in the past were mediocre at best and did not age well. Same with old music. The thing is, one remembers only the highlights and often the memories are wrapped in soft fluffy nostalgia.

If you look beyond AAA titles you are in heaven nowadays. I wish I had more time to play all the not-so-hyped stuff from the past 5 years. Of course, there is not a gem hidden behind every corner. But that's how it had been in the good old days too.

Taste is personal of course, but I really enjoyed Hotline Miami 1+2, FTL, Pixel Heroes, Meatboy, VVVVVV, Volgar the Viking, Pillars of Eternity and also some rather short-lasting games as Unmechanical and Banished. As for fps I recently added Betrayer to my library, but haven't had time to play it yet (as with 90% of my games haha).

They've made some of the genre of games a little too easy in regards to spoon feeding people on how to play it.

Guess it's just to dumb down the learning curb a bit more.

For example, the Tomb Raider series, really interesting game for it's time and the puzzles were pretty challenging if you've played it many years ago, any of the newer ones are a piece of piss and the help systems implemented just make me not want to play it anymore.

I see. I thought you were talking about what typically is called "fangame" with your "boshy type games". They are games inspired by "I Wanna Be The Guy" and there's thousands of them. "I Wanna Be The Boshy" is one of them and oftentimes people think Boshy is the original and that other fangames are copying it. I cry every time.

By the way, " Wings of Vi" is made by Solgryn, the creator of Boshy, and it's pretty good.

Yeah, I knew about I Wanna Be The Guy being the original branefuck game but boshy is faster to type. Don't think I saw ddk playing I wanna be the guy, but he definitely did play Wings of Vi after boshy.
