ow man so nice, the music was semi-ok, but it is likeable since its nicely synced, the team effort is awesome and i especialy liked the insane ctf runs, helping better times with EVERYTHING.

I forgot to mention the repeted sequences with diffrent kamera angles, that is what i miss in other movies, here is a prime example of how nicely apropriate freecaming goes hand in hand with POV.

I have to say I saw the titel and thought, Shoalin, sick, fucking EH sicker this must be insane. I will rate this material by the highest standards, in my believe system that is Ill put it next to previous Shaolin productions, next to KOS next to D-F Productions. here is my verdict:

The last Shaolin video was a disgrace for the name, this is not anywhere near that low but it does not convince either. I will split content and editing here since it is 2 companies responsible for the 2 factors

All the basics are done right like i expect it from such a name but that was it. The video was basic. monotonous music, classic early 2000s defrag feeling. clean but meaningless free cam, it feels half-assed. nobody looked to give it identity or some special moments.

Content:
yes EH sickest crew ever, I dont doubt it the legend has been made and will go down in history. This time Im missing the insanity though. where is the trying to go under the jumppad only units over the teleporting surface of EH4 The plasmaclimbing on the plasmaclimber on the plasmaclimber on the plasmaclimber. It was mostly team ctf defrag, pragmatic thinking rather than fantasizing about what could be doable. It was sick defrag but I did not have my mind blown.

Disappointed would be too much it is a video with good content and good editing but when you buy a rolls royce good interior and good engineering is not good enough. 7/10

2010-2012 were the years when the new wave of players were active and motivated. what you've seen here were the leftover demos from previous projects dating back up to 6 years. i'm also afraid that's the last you ever going to see.

Thanks for your thoughts, it means a lot that people still care enough to at least take some time and spew some words on the internet about what they think about the movie, positive or not.

I see where you're coming from on the editing side of things, really I do, and I'm sorry to hear it doesn't match up with your expectations.

For what it's worth- part of the 'blandness' comes from just getting older and not having hundreds of hours available to spend on making a movie. Including hiatuses, loss of motivation and other struggles this movie's production already spanned around 18 months as it stands- going by the 'old' approach would've doubled that easily. Content ages, interest declines, I felt it better to just round it off and finish up. For a comparison, Aerodynamic 2 probably took me around 300 hours to put together (given, that included a bunch of scrapped ideas), excluding rendering time. This was more in the line of 80-100 hours and around 500 hours of capturing.

Doing things in a more restrained, 'oldschool' style while still innovating on a technical level (capturing at 4k at essentially 7680fps) is something that lies within my reach and allows me to actually get something done in a 'reasonable' amount of time. I wouldn't put my money on ever seeing anything the likes of iT2/CJ/whatever your top picks are in the foreseeable future, not from me anyway and I'm essentially the last of the Shaolin still alive and kicking, this may well be the last Shaolin Productions movie to see the light of day.

If I'd ever be doing another Q3 video it'd be one that uses older content and refreshes it in a modern way. Reason being that a) it's something I'm just interested in doing and b) I don't want to let anyone who's got fresh content down again by taking more than a year to finish a video. I'd rather take my time and do it proper. Who knows where that will take me, maybe I will revisit the olden days and go for an editing and effects extravaganza, or maybe I'll keep it more in line with my recent work because it's just more easily manageable. I've been toying around with doing a full-on HD remake of some classic video(s), kind of like it1r but maintaining the original soundtrack, content and editing styles (as opposed to redoing all three of those for it1r). Another thought I had was to make a 'q3 freestyle greatest hits' type of video with all the past highlights. What and if it's going to be, only time will tell.

Anyway, thanks again for your thoughts, sorry to hear you didn't like it quite as much as you would've wanted. I hope the next one, if it ever comes to fruition, goes down better for you.

I perfectly understand and I tip my hat. I have immense respect for the dedication and time that went into all of your work- you and the other shoalins definitely created a body of work that will be remembered years to come.

Thanks for the constructive criticism. I'll take most of the responsibility for critiques on content, because having a 100 percent timed-run based movie was my inception. A few members expressed their disapproval of the idea and I expected that. I felt that the team needed to try something different.

i always admire the amount of time, dedication, coordination, training and communication you defraggers put into this kind of stuff. you make gaming look like an art, you crazy defrag mofos!

It's just some people walking on maps. I can do that too, easily, except I can't if I try, but I can't tell that from video. Video does not demonstrate something that is recognizable as impossible or even very hard without being familiar with defrag, so at first you don't see any reasons why would anyone make a video of this boring walking/jumping that you see everyday on pub ca servers. Actually on ca servers it's more skilled because people rocket jump and stuff.

I would say that it doesn't take much familiarity with Quake movement in order to recognize, understand and admire the difficulty and precision of what those guys execute.

Well, I do same stuff in every ffa match and not find it difficult.

I just get some popcorn and watch a movie. Of course I don't analyze it paying attention to every miniscule detail. More so, I might even run it on a second monitor and continue to read ESR watching it only with peripheral vision. It's just a god damn quake movie, if it wants my attention it needs to grab it.

If you are a professional historian, you wouldn't be interested in documentaries, you'd read some real books/research. Have to say I'm a bit disappointed. Only because Shaolin has set such a high bar for itself in the past. The main problem is some of the content. People just standing there with their gauntlets spinning most of the time. Tricking It 2 really outshines this as there are at least interaction, not people with a weight on the +fire button while afk. It did not make the runs any more interesting, maybe even the opposite.

The music is old, and the style editing is too 'safe' along with the usual boring intro. It lacked the spice from previous productions.

The fov felt too low as well.

But other than that great stuff, its still top notch. Just not as good as I expect from Shaolin.

This comment is not directed at the OP or Wussie specifically but to anyone doing videos with q3mme.

There's a work-around for the broken fog rendering at 4:35-4:40.
There's 2 ways to do it:
1. If you're stuck with q3mme 1.6, find the shader defining the specific fog to fix and change the last parameter of "fogparms" to a higher value until you get the desired result.
2. In q3mme 1.7 beta, increase (if needed) r_fogMinOpaqueDistance until it looks right.
Yes, it will change the fog's opacity but the map looking slightly different is better than looking outright awful.

There's also a way to disable that horribly bad sounding sub-sampled "slow-mo" audio at 2:37-3:00 with s_timescale 0. It's not clear that it wasn't intentional, but it sounds bad either way.

It would be a shame to not put all the work entdark did on q3mme 1.7 beta to use.

Great thematic movie!

good stuff. I personally appreciated the content more than the editing, cause applying team-tricking concepts to regular runs is really interesting (as it breaks most of them in many ways). There may be potential in designing maps specifically for this.

Editing was okay most of the time (supports movie pace well, shows off what's going on etc.) but there were a few bits where the repeats/3rd-person switches weren't particularly helpful in showing what's going on or were overdone (for example, supporter POV at 2:38 (q3wsx2) felt unnecessary).

Thank you! Yes, there are maps that are created for team-based runs only. Thirdperson, 2plyr, cyfio, ful-04, and a handful of other maps. Those maps are pretty brilliant in design and I'd love to see a proper movie featuring them, but this wasn't our focus. We preferred to focus on maps that had buttons/switches/doors to create a smooth route without detours or stopping. Some of them are old and can easily be improved, but the concepts are still there.

Back in the day, as young kid I watched "4Kings - Revolution" and was amazed. I also wanted to make epic productions like this. So I picked up video editing and level design (for creating my sets). I then went on to learn programming and am now working as a software developer. I pretty much have my computer nerdyness to thank to a shoalin productions movie.

As for this movie:

+ tricks
+ classic 'feel' to it
