VGA can do 1600x1200 @ 100Hz. 120/144 is no problem when hooking up to an old CRT. I imagine Hdmi or any modern interface is capable of handling 120Hz and above at lower resolutions.
The main/real question is whether it's been made part of the requirements spec for the interface (therefore drivers produced to comply with spec).
Iirc hdmi is effectively a repackaged DVI with audio, and dual DVI can handle 120Hz no problem.
Check your laptops GPU model/chip and hop over the manufacturers' website, you should hopefully be able to find a list of officially supported resolutions/Hz.
Ultimately my friend, you just have to do the research to confirm it yourself otherwise you may be wasting money/time on something that is destined not to work. Good luck!
