3tb hdd? That's a lot of data lost if it fails.

I regularly do backups of the important information. And there are no more than 20GBs for me.
Yes 3TB+3TB is a lot. I used to be with 1x500GB few months ago and that was ok. Forces you to be more rational.

2 ssd's.

1 small 32-64Gb for operating system and one large one for games.

use old hdd for movies/pics etc.

I'm afraid SSDs still not so reliable.. I've had a bad experience with 2 SSDs back in 2013.. One has a huge wright/read speed drop at ~15% of it's volume, other just died.
Can you advice some descend SSDs?

SSDs are more reliable than HDDs if you buy the right brand and model...

the 850 pro is more reliable, but intel probably holds the crown for most solid ssd's ever since they came on the market.

I dont know why people really that much HDD storage these days, what are you storing that 6TB :P?

I got a 256 SSD for my OS and progamming stuff. Then I got a 2TB HDD for games, data, etc

and I have an additional 2TB external which I use for important backups.

I don't need 6TB :D it's just how much you can get for the same money.

2TB is enough for me.

Games not so much, but OS definitely.

My IDE, Test DB's, and various other things that need read/write to HDD will be a lot faster.

Movies and music. I've got loads of cd's and many dvd's, some blu rays also and with an Apple TV it's quite alright to have that much storage space.

From what I keep hearing about SSDs, this would still be an order of magnitude slower than getting the SSD. Booting (an area where SSDs are said to give the most easily noticed improvements) would still be slow as fuck. And how big is a fresh windows 10 install? 30GB? What will you do with the remaining 2.9 TB?

Software that isn't games isn't that big either. I don't have much experience with windows, but I'd be really surprised if the base system + a collection of the most useful software would weigh in at more than let's say 60 GBs. (Comparison: OS stuff (all installed programs, libraries, documentation etc) in my Linux system weigh in at <15 GB, and I have quite a few big packages.)

If you want an actual noticable performance gain with two HDs, you might have to go RAID. But again, that would be really stupid, since it has various drawbacks and you still would have nowhere near the performance than what you would get with an SSD instead.

So, then I should try it too. Fking addictive technologies. I can't live without 144Hz now.. I just reject playing on 60Hz. 60Hz is like a torture for me now. And all this just after 2 days on 144hz.

i have one for OS, and one for games.
If i need space again on that SSD for games, i just move the folder of a rarely played game to HDD, and set a shortcut with the "mklink" command.
So it will be still installed in steam/origin, just that it starts from HDD.

I still use an old hdd for games. Is there any benifit besides games loading faster? (If thats even the case. I only use a ssd for windows which is kinda small)

for games that load the environment during gameplay, an ssd could have a higher average fps over a hdd.

another benefit is, that they are noiseless - i almost forgot how my HDD's sound while working.
