id always go for less input lag, as 120hz v 144hz is not a huge difference

I just had a look at what's out there, and the very first monitor I saw had 144 Hz refresh rate, 0.7ms input lag, and 1ms G2G response, for $250
I was expecting to pay more than that for a used one. The prices were so much higher last time I looked into it. I paid close to that for my 60hz monitor. And what's up with that 0.7ms lag? Last time I looked, 7ms would have been considered excellent

Actually, when I see people hitting 50% , it looks the same as me hitting 30. They are off the target just as much of the time, so I still hold out some hope that I'm not to blame

What you see when you spectate is not an accurate representation of what is happening on the players screen at all. You're seeing upwards of 30% less than what is going on and more delayed than it actually happens. If 50% in spec looks like your 30% that's because 50% actually looks like only 30% SHOULD be hitting. Your 30% looks like 10% to someone specrating you.

1ms is on most monitors under £200, to reach £250 in todays world, you will either have a IPS panel or 144hz, or a 27" screen and 1ms

Yeah...grey to grey pixel response. But not input lag. The manufacturers don't seem to want people knowing it even exists

There are 60Hz monitors and 60Hz monitors. Some are good, some are bad. U just got shitty one.

144Hz monitor is what you need. Its night and day compared to 60Hz. And most 60Hz have very slow response time.

I could have a LG 24GM77 for sale, otherwise go for an XL2411Z or XL2430T.

Well, that's what I was concerned about. Sure it's an older generation monitor, but none of the reviews I've read mention this. Maybe it's my eyes. I should add that "ghosting" is probably the wrong word, since people associate it with a constant ghost image in a fixed position relative to the main image, regarrdless of movement or the lack thereof.
This is a sequence of repeat images, trailing out from behind the most recent frame, in the opposite direction to the direction of travel. Like when you are at a biker gang's anniversary party, and the band insist that the lighting guy over-uses the strobe light, and the naked lady carrying the albino python waves her hand in front of your face, and it looks like she's doing E Honda's 100-hand slap.

yeah i know what you mean, used to see this all the time on old cheap low-res flat panels, also on old tv's. simpleitems in quake are trippy as fuck on them, i kinda like it :D (well not as much as my 144hz screen or some good crt stuff :3)

Ahh. Okay. I just used this site: xxxxxx Which confirms that I'm, at least, getting the advertised frame-rate. I bumped the speed of the UFO up to 2880 pixels per second, and it looks about the same as what I'm getting in game as I look around. If I follow the UFO with my eyes, it stops leaving trails. It just appears to be vibrating. If I look at a fixed point and let the ufo pass by, I see a long-ass trail of them. I suppose 60hz isn't that much when you have no interleaving or compression, smoothing things out.
I guess the problem is with my brain not letting go of the old images. I guess that's why the last image in the sequence is always my Cousin Steve asking if I want to play Terrorists and Nurses in the old abandoned handcuff factory.

Come to think of it...I'm pretty sure I don't get this strobe effect in Counterstrike. And, when I watch my demos, or render them for Youtube, I don't get it. And Youtube doesn't interlace video. If you upload progressive, it shows progressive, so it's not interlacing smoothing things out a bit. It seems to only be quake. But it could be that when I'm playing, my eyes are fixed on the crosshair, unlike a demo...I dunno. I think I need to DL a few configs to try in place of my own. I deffo need to go see if it happens in CS. I'm sure I'd have noticed, though.

Nope, something is defo wrong there it looks really unplayable.

Could be a problem with your card / screen or drivers. Quake uses OpengGL and CS uses DirectX to render the graphics to screen so maybe it's an old driver issue when handling OpenGL. If so make sure you have updated your drivers to the latest ones available.

If yer feeling brave you could try forcing a 75hz refresh rate and bypass that bugged 60hz mode altogether. Most 60hz screens can do 75hz refresh rates at lower resolutions anyways. I did this with my last monitor to great success. Do a search on that for more info.

Seems a bit risky. I think I'll just buy a new monitor. I'm watching a few on Ebay to get an idea of the used price vs the new price, but I might just splash out no matter what.
I only get the crazy trails when I pan quickly. Until I started playing CS, I was hitting 60+ rail every game and they were mostly flicks, but that's more a muscle memory thing; I don't see anything during the flick itself, so I guess it's not gonna interfere with that. But I can't stop my crosshair on a target unless I saw the target before I started moving, and know the distance to move beforehand..if that makes sense...
It definitely messes with whipping out rockets at closer range, and makes fast rocket jumps harder...I guess. I dunno. I'd only been playing Quake for less than a month when I got this monitor, so I was nowhere near good enough to even notice. The problem seems more to do with old frames persisting than with the refresh rate itself, so maybe there's something I could do about it. I just don't think I'll bother; I'll just get a new monitor and then move on to blaming my crappy LG on my chair or headphones. I've been hearing on Youtube comment threads that there's a gaming chair that guarantees insane headshots that make it look like you have an aimbot. ;)

Yeah just replaced your monitor and check everything is working fine. I didn't see stuff like that when my GPU broke and I was using onboard graphics on a 60hz screen.

It's only when I pan fairly quickly; I thought it was normal. I only notice it in games. And the windows pointer...if I move it fairly fast, I see 10 of them.

ACtually, it supports 75hz at a lower resolution, but when I test it, I'm still getting 60. Checked the cable and it's single link, so maybe that's why. No point getting a new cabble for 15 more frames a second, when I can just buy a new monitor with one supplied.

Actually, forget all that. I just bought a VG248QE. Before it arrives, I'll try to find a way to record what I've been playing with so far. I'll put a camera on a tripod and take pics at different shutter speeds until I get a shot that's the same as what I'm seeing

Hmmm...Windows and CCC both report 144hz, but I know it's not. And that ufo test thingy confirms it. It's showing as "generic pnp monitor" in device manager, it won't install the driver off the web page, the menu looks nothin like the one in the manual, and is impossible to navigate, and most of the inputs are missing.

You bought a gutted vg248qe....
It has the g-sync panel in it.
That's why you don't have hdmi or dvi.

The g-sync guts are made by nvidia but not available anymore.
You may have to look for special drivers.

Ahh...I got the driver to install by selecting "have disc" and browsing directly to the .inf, rather than just trying to browse to the folder and search inside it. I get the full frame-rate now, and it identifies as the right model in device manager. The inputs thing I guess could be the result of a repair, but that menu is bugging me. Wonder if it's a firmware thingy...but there's no firmware update listed on the webshite
Also....CS loads fine, but when I tried to load QL it crashed. But I can open it at 60hz, and then change it back up in windows. I guess I can thank updating my cfx card driver for that. Lightboost is not an option since I can't use the menu. I'll wait and see what the seller has to say about that.

They're still quite expensive in the UK. Usually around £250. I was gonna make an offer for this one, but I thought screw it and paid the Buy it now price at £200. I'm not so hungry that I'm going to go out of my way to get £20 off.
So...there are lots of these? Was it an after-market modification? What was modified? Seems they just removed some inputs and broke the menu. I thought G-sync was a standard feature on this model anyways? It doesn't bother me none, cus I have an ATI card.

That is the menu. The g-sync kit is the internal guts of the monitor.
They've been replaced so you don't have the same menu.
The diy panel only has the pc video input thing and no hdmi/dvi.

The vg248e isn't a g-sync monitor.
Nvidia made new guts for it and sold it as a diy kit.
They planned on releasing a g-sync version of the monitor but never did.
They discontinued the diy kit also.

for $200 that's not bad. The monitor is usually $250 and the kit is $200-300.

AHHH! Yes, that's it. I knew the moment I saw the mains transformer on the board inside. Mine is using an external transformer. Well, I guess it doesn't affect me at the moment. But I'll bear it in mind when I upgrade my GFX card.
