Anyway with win10 you can directly cast stuff to a device with two clicks, alternative is plex media server.

its interesting how it nowhere says what are capabilities of smart tv in each case... for example, Toshiba 40S3653, even though has smart capabilities, media player only reads from directly attached media like usb, and no option to search thru network.

I got my eye on this Samsung 43J5502, dunno if it has browsable network or not.

ye if i would know at start i would check each manufacturer user experiance with navigating OS before i bought the set... now i have a LG 2013 model made in 2014 (and yes i didnt check the model year i asummed to much), which i cant upgrade to new webOS ... GG

you always have to setu some media server, i dont think smartTV will scan your network for shared files if that is what you mean.

don't bother buying a smart tv, buy something with 30+ inches and hook it up to your htpc (which you can make for $500 or buy on ebay for $30).

I got htpc but in another room.... so I wanted to pull movies form that one over network and to show on this new tv. But I need it to go over network. Possible ?

ok, after some research and help from few ppl, I guess each of smart tv sets in order to read over network need some kind of dlna media server. I tried installing Serviio and it worked like a charm.

I guess there is few others like plex or samsung's smart view 2.0 .
