Q2 gfx are weird. So many things in look out of place, like those explosion animations and most of weapon models. Also taht rail recoil animation is more fitting for a shotgun. Somehow they made it look worse than qw.
Sick skills tho

that's because in the video everything has been retextured with some 'modern' texture pak. the originals fit into the game a lot more nicely imho. if you're talking about the drawgun models, then yea, they're kinda shit. :]
Truth is quake started to die exactly when q3a came out. Quake world and quake 2 were the very best quake had to offer. It's certainly too bad that many of players never got to experience the 96 to 99 years of glory.
I won't label q3a and ql bad games, but they never did much for me. Certainly I have more love for q3a. I'm with weird, the unlagged netcode absolutely destroyed it for me. Also, no ctf population in the states. Q2 has more ctf players till this day so guess q2 is the true undefeated world champion.
The textures in q2 suck. Look at the variety of maps/textures created for q3a custom maps compared to the dull grey shit of q2. Also I bellieve the design of q3a is far superior with shaderlists and text-based editing. The movement of q3a is better, there is support for far better looking player models (see openarena), and other models like trees, water fountains or any blender models (see lvlworld.com ).
Yeah it was a great game. I had lots of fun with q3a. Had great graphics, textures and maps. Still, it was the beginning of quakes decline. I believe it is due to the split in community, the anal retentive desires of each individual. Qw players are a whole different breed from q2 players and so on. And of all the types of quake players out there I believe it is the ones who started with quake and quake world who have the most valueable opinion on the matter. Imo if a player started to get into Quake through q3a they are short sighted and their opinions really don't count for shit. For example, they say movement is better in q3a. How? It's the same old shit without quakes air control. Explain how it's better? I prefer q2 movement over q3 but I won't say it's better. It's just my opinion.
Anyways, you're not wrong but you're also not right. As for most things, it's all a matter of opinion. I love everything about the first two titles and I am disgusted by everything that followed the third title. I'm especially disgusted by the fact that lot of the newish players act like older quake games had bad graphics when they were the most ground breaking games during their time in the limelight. First truelly 3d competitive shooters, first games to push the envelope by incorporating 3d acceleration. Fucking bow down the king, nerds.
Its not that q2 gfx werent advanced its just that they are ugly. qw has worse gfx, but it isn't ugly. Q2 is still a great game. Gameplay-wise only thing I don't like about it is rail delay

I thought the textures and sounds in q2 fucking made the game. It fit the personality/theme of the game quite well during its time. The taunts and nade throwing fights were the shit too.
The tradition carried well with q3a too. But for all the improvements q3a had somehow the population withered and died. CS and COD had something that the majority wanted; simple and straightforward fun gameplay.
I always loved the RG in Q2. It just felt powerful. Just felt right. And the nade cooking....woo hoo that was a source of greatness. Shame its not in QL lol. Or cooking nades in GL at the very least, but that's only a wicked dream lol.
Also is it me or are some maps retextured and definitely a gfx mod is in order
There are no retextured maps in this frag-movie, the client used is Aprq2 (i think) which adds cell-shading effects to the skins of the weapons and armors etc....
