they have probably $800m in the past 4 years of not releasing a new AM3+ chipset with ddr4 and more pci-e lanes or something

all that extra bandwidth and actual pci-e 3.0 would give them back 8000 in 3dmark intel win by

intel ddr4 and full pci-e 3.0, and move a texture twice as big in half the time over AMD, so in todays world of HD textures, that is what matters

"You can spend all your life for waiting." - Often so true. However I think right now if you were to upgrade your GPU, you'd be wasting your money massively. I'm waiting with my gtx 780 til Pascal arrives before I upgrade. The difference is fairly big on Fire Strike/benchmarking scores compared with a GTX 980Ti, but right now they're starting at ~£500, and although it might give you say 30 more FPS and the ability to put a few new titles on Ultra or 1440p without Fps drops, I personally think that's just too much right now when something so much better is just around the corner. the 980ti might drop massively in price when Pascal/Zen arrives at the tail end of the year

edit: In terms of CPU/RAM/SSD, I know that right now the more lanes you can get the better as the new SSDs can give you read/write speeds of 2000MB/s if they have enough lanes on the mobo, 4x that of the standard SATA3 SSDs. Skylake-E should arrive in Q3/Q4 2016 too. From end of 2016-mid2017 will be very exciting times for upgrades.

I wouldn't bother with CPU. Only thing I would change is GPU for GTX 980Ti. But its only if you actually play modern AAA titles, no point until at least next year otherwise.

To be honest if you do upgrade now, either get a medium or lower specced graphics card and save for the new nvidia 1000 series that are coming later this year.

The new cards are a significant improvement over the 900 series (die shrink, high bandwidth memory, support for dx12 and vulcan, etc).

I mean I am expecting them to be significantly more expensive, but if you are saving for an upgrade I would either just keep your current card and save a bit extra for those cards down the line or get like a 960 or 970 instead and then later this year upgrade to a 1000 series.

The 900 series are pretty much approaching the end of their lifecycle and the new 1000 series are far more future proof.

I have a 6700k @ 4.8z and SLI GTX 970 (already had a 970 so instead of a 980Ti i figured id get a 2nd one)

But i think the biggest performance boost you will see is from the GPU upgrade.
The cpu is really nice but really Skylake shines when you use things like the M2 SSD slot and the extra PCIE lanes.

Also i would say its mostly at what resolution you play at ... at 1080p id say a 970 or a 980 is fine... i personally play on 1440p at which point a 980 Ti makes more sense.

*Edit if you do get a Skylake processor... there is a lot of benches showing it really takes advantage of higher mhz DDR memory... so get at least between 2666 and 3000 mhz (or even higher if you want to splurge money)

BTW upgrade is gay now.. overclocking FTW. There is no point of getting sh1tlake. About graphics cards.. well 980Ti is a nice one but.. it's not worth it. So OC to the max and waiting 1-2 years for a complete upgrade.

After analyzing some info I would definitely say NO. F_K UPGRADE.

1) CPU. Absolutely pointless. My 3770K@4500Mhz is more than enough for everything.
2) GPU. Pointless. My GTX780@1300Mhz beats stock GTX 980 by ~10%. So what's the point then? It's like throwing your money in a trashcan.
980TI? Too expensive for this average 15-20% boost.
AMD? Thanks, I already have a heater.
3) DDR4? LOLWAT? This is the most stupid sh1t ever. My DDR3-1333Mhz Samsung Original Works fine on 2400Mhz. MEGAOC editions can hit 2866+.

So I'll better invest in sound and wait until upgrade will become reasonable (at least 40% performance boost on stock frequencies).
