No, that did what valve has been doing with CS, improving it's graphics, gameplay, features, social interaction, spectator experience and so on. Almost exactly the opposite of what ID has done with quake. That may not have got quake a huge player base, but it would surely be much bigger than nowadays...

CSGO is shit, full of cheaters. We played few times as a stack of SMFC-GE's and hardly winning on MG1-MGE ranks, lol. In every game there are cheaters now. Even full stacks of cheaters.
Fucking kids that running into walls but aiming better than tier 1 PRO's.
I have a 150GB of replays with cheaters now from NVIDIA ShadowPlay..

hold on to that stuff. One of these cheaters will run for president, that's when you whip out the fact they were cheating in CS and sink their campaign

it was so much simpler in the early 90s/00s wasn't it, just a relative handful of gamers playing a handful of online games for a relative pittance of prize money. It was expensive and difficult to get online (relative to now) so those people who made it were us nerds who were the early adopters and all part of a small online community.

Now we are overrun by the masses with cheap internet and cheap computers & consoles who are born with the internet and we are seeing the results :)
