Nothing wrong with 10v10ca or 24 player ffa. If you are too weak to handle the pressure or not smart enough to realize it's not chaotic at all, then it's your problem of being noob at quake. For the same reason people hated loadouts in QL, real quake pros hate childish low-player modes. If you don't like skill, there are other games than quake out there.

Fortunately, boredom can be averted by thinking about the game at hand. Unfortunately, this is something the average "real 24-man ffaer" is probably not very used to or good at. Makes perfect sense, in a 24 man FFA (probably with loadouts too!) thinking has no tangible effect on the result.

Seems like there were more players during the syncerror/sponge/sasparillo era. I agree with what you said but my beef isn't with the server admins. Most of em are doing decent job. My issue is there are too many servers and too little population. Keep in mind I was never a duel freak in quake and I work odd hours (graveyard shift).

Basically I set my expectations far too high when I setup a 1gb ram vpn for seattle servers. Now that I've seen the population I realize what a waste of my time this game has become. It was pretty great back when it first came into open beta. CTF was popping, FFA was 16 players max, CA had multiple servers to choose from that had good latency.

I miss the days when EVOL was still around.

Meh, I got banned on a FFA server. As far as I can figure out, it was for being in the lead. The guy who won the game before, that I joined halfway through, never got banned for it. But then, he was chatty with the server owner.
If you want to put an elo limit or an auto handicap, fine. Or if someone wins by a margin you think is unfair and you ask them to leave after one win..again, fine. Weird, but fine.
But to kickban people just for being in the lead and not being one of your buddies, despite nothing in the server's name suggesting such a policy, is something I'm seeing a bit too much of.
Same happened on a CA server where all the regulars were paranoid about something they called "rapists". Which, from the context, I inferred to mean "Anyone better than me and my friends".
Just when you think you're never going to get good at this game, you get kicked for owning people who have played much, much longer, and it 's just a little teeny ray of hope and reminds you that no matter how late you got into the game, or how hard you get raped on decent servers, there are still plenty of people much worse than you.
So...Yeah...kicking me DID teach me a lesson, I guess. But only that I'm better after 9 months than you and your buddies are after 9 years. That, right there, is so sad that it's hilarious.

same thing happened to me, actually even worse. First, they voted to kick the guy that was 2nd and I f2 of course, then for me. So, they removed top 2 for no reason at all... just pathetic imo, so not quake like, loser behavior. previous quakes including q3, used to have mentally tough players, that could take a beating and stand up. when ql came out that gradually changed to playing vs weak crying babies that came from other games (of course some good players came too).

With tiers gone, playing on a noob server as a "good" player is basically tierslumming, something that was looked down upon before.
Some people couldn't care less about improving at the game, they just wanna shoot people with the rocket launcher and have a chat with their friends. Nothing wrong with that. It's not sad.

Yeah...as long as the server name/description makes it clear that it's a noob server. Most players will leave a server if they win a game by a decent margin, anyway. But even those that don't, and hang around once they realise they can win every match, are completely entitled to do so if the server owner can't be bothered to state where his line is drawn in the sand.
Putting "fun only" in the tags is meaningless. You join the server, and everyone is shooting everyone, yet you still get kicked for...shooting everyone.
What happened to elo/glicko limits? Now is the perfect time for that, since making a smurf account is no longer free.

The players are entitled to hang around on a server as much as they want, just as the server owner is entitled to kick whoever he wants for whatever reason. It's their server.

Ban reasons:
-Being in the lead
-Being not good enough (whatever the fucker who runs the show calls 'good' today)
-Not playing as the Holy Admin and his Cohorts expect you to
-Skill gap (usually with friendly FU CHEATER before kick)
-Dumbass dispute with sysop going medieval on you because he's butthurt

Don't sweat it. If you're banned from a server, it is actually a gift for you; you no longer can go and play with morons. They actually do you a favor so you can go and find better servers and they can be morons in peace.

I would like to take this opportunity to share with you cheating accusations which were directed at someone else. I can't remember who was being accused nor who was accusing, but I remember the argument quite well.

Namely, the person in the lead of a ffa game was cheating. An aimbot? No. Wallhack? No. What then? A cheating config consisting of stuff like high r_picmip. Unfortunately stating that virtually everyone plays with such a config led to nowhere.

I have been playing quake live for about 5 years now, love it.. Insomniacs is the only really active server with a ping I can play on. I was just playing a match, wasn't winning or anything, and bam i get kickbanned. I have been playing there for years. And theres nothing I can do... :\ wtf

I also got permabanned from Insomniacs a few day ago while in the lead. Now that game shows as a quit in my stats.
