Actually does raise the question: why isn't there a mouse with magnetic skates and an opposite pole pad so that it slightly hovers and has 0 resistance and 0 physical pad wear?
I don't know. I wasn't entirely seriously but, that said, to achieve levitation you probably need magnetic fields strong enough to penetrate a standard shield. I don't think it's really feasible realistically but even if it were, I can imagine another problem with such a setup. If your hand applies more pressure on one side of the mouse, it tilts, which means the sensor should perceive a movement even if there was no movement on the usual plane used for mouse movement.
