If they had an ounce of common sense they'd spend tens of millions of dollars developing a game that has a combined community of 2,000 players, so they can be told by a chorus of players that it's not "exactly like Q3/L." Even in its current form, and with all the negative reviews, the expectation is that DOOM is gone a sell a lot of copies because their development teams actually focused their design around concepts that have widespread appeal.

Just think about those two sentences. lol. Anything short of a "1:1" remake will be shunned by the community, and will thereby inherit the issues of the previous iteration.

No new Quake will ever do as well as its predecessors in terms of longevity because the business landscape, the consumer market i.e. the target audience, are radically different today than they were 20 years ago. The best they can hope for is to make a financial killing, and that requires them to cater to current market needs.

If you want a successor to AFPS games that you can enjoy, either continue to play QL, support Reflex, or support Diabotical.

Yes, anything is better than not doing nothing. And I do hope that people will keep the pressure on. The developers/publishers might want our money, but it's WE who decide whether we pay it or not. So we should exploit that angle as best as we can.

So I'm keeping my extremely reserved stance here, if Q5 turns out to be a blast, I'll celebrate with everyone. So far, there's nothing to think so.

The process you see here is the same as with old band reunions and rereleases of rock albums - the 90's and 80's youth are entering or being in middle age, have more disposable income so they are willing to shell money on nostalgic wares to revive their younger days. This is pure gold for anyone with a basic sense of business.

Quake 5 has several problems already:

-market full of FPSs
-biased and bored gaming community, spoiled by graphics and a constellation of various gametypes
-hardware is past basic 3D but still not exactly there in terms of photorealism
-there's no room for experiment - execs dont want that, investors dont want that. They want solid return of their investment.

And what story would Q5 conceive? Another rehash of Strogg war? Reimagining of eternal Arena? Return to Slipgate Wars of first Quake? Been there, done that. Not to mention that older Quakes had stories as pretext for graphics and gameplay, these stories weren't basically worth a dime themselves.

The only way Q5 could sell imo is unbelievably good graphics and revolutionary story/gameplay. Maybe if Carmack pushes Occulus forward and Q5 becomes the first OcculusVR game, that will be a great start.

There are plenty of Oculus games already. Releasing Quake 5 for that won't make an impact.

And in any case it is 100% impossible. In the current state of VR at least, in first person games moving your character yourself is very nauseating. That's why in the vast majority you are not able to move at all, and those that do allow that use short teleporting instead of walking with a stick or a keyboard, let alone running or strafe jumping.

I'm all for a sequel to Quake 1. Hope they don't make it console-friendly (slow) nor VR friendly (slowest).

Quake 3 was never about SP its about MP. So same goes for quake 5. Make it an e-sport platform for community's to grow on... And introduce gamecards or micro transaction or something sustainable.

Q3 sold much less than Q1 and Q2, probably because it was multiplayer only. They shouldn't make that mistake again.

Q4's multiplayer was a Q3 gameplay copycat with better graphics, new maps and added features, plus mods and clients made by the community. No one plays it today. Its single player was related to Q2's and wasn't memorable at all.

QL is a copypasting job that is Q3 with added features, supported for years by the devs and the community, elo system from QLRanks, tdmpickup, featured on ESl main stage, on Eurosport and so on. Now it maybe has 1,000 players; practically nothing for all the effort behind it. Not enough to make a full fledged game.

What I want to say is that Q3 is not the way to go. It never was successful for the company, and they tried three times. People just don't like Q3.

If they are going to make a sequel then their only choice is Quake 1.

SyncError said that it's been selling well enough since the Steam transition and remaining profitable on Discord. Not raking in huge profits, but since they don't have to deal with server fees or anything like that anymore, it's doing fine.

The most likely version is that ql was in red numbers most of the time, but they kept it running as it was the only id project that still had players (and I'm sure Sync did his best on both sides to retain a job which consisted mostly of slacking around on irc and twitch channels) and waited for the new doom to go live.
Had Ql been profitable at any point, they would've invested into it and finished the ingame ad system at the very least.

The in-game ad system was finished. It was finished 3 times actually because it had to be rewritten as one advertising partner company went out of business after another to suite the new one. It was even profitable with the ads for a few months until their current ad partner went out again. That's when they then gave up on that idea and went with the subscriptions... which also kept the game in the green... albeit probably just barely.

But yeah at no point did the game make so much money for it to make sense to invest even more in it and risk starting to lose money on it.

To be fair q4 mp was broken on release. Osp and cpma were miles ahead of it. I'm not saying new quake with proper mp out of box would be big, its just that vanila q4 mp was a shit + noons could run it at decent fps at the time

It does not matter how good the game is.

The gaming industry has been catering to the endless hordes of casuals, EVERYTHING is designed to make things better for casuals and groups of casuals to jump into a game and feel great about their virtual selves. This has been happening for the last 16 years at least.

They don't care about esport and creating the best competitive environment to push the limits of human skill, all they care about is how many casuals will buy their game and continue playing it.

Just look at the evolution of games since the late 90's and early 2000's.

The first big esport games were Quake and SC. One prize was a ferrari, old Fat won prizes of 30k, 50k etc. Along comes CS, a dumbed down, slower paced, more casual friendly FPS that overtakes the quake series by a huge margin and becomes insanely popular. Then along comes COD and the influx of military shooters after CS, we all know where that has led.

Starcraft lasted a lot longer largely due to it being adopted as a professional esport in korea, and they ran with that for a long time, but over the last 5 years that has dropped considerably as well. Enter 2016, where starcraft is now even further in decline, especially because of all the match fixing stuff going on. That is going to be the final nail in the coffin for SC I think.

TL/DR: esport game quality has been on a dramatic evolutionary decline for so long that entire generations of kids have grown up on sub-standard dumbed down games over the past 10-15 years. There is no going back. Just look at the 'esport' game list for big events after Quake was dropped from things like WCG, ESWC, CPL etc. It's a joke.

The flaw with your argument is that neither Quake nor Starcraft were made as "e-sports" or competitive games. Those are first and foremost single player games made for casuals, that unintentionally happened to have a very high skill ceiling in mutiplayer due to players abusing the fact games were very raw and flawed back then.

Id software and Blizzard developers never, ever intended to make "a competitive environment to push the limits of human skill". They just wanted everyone to buy their game and focused on single player, just like Call of Duty's do. Or as you say, Quake and SC did "cater to the endless hordes of casuals". No difference in attitude at all.

For example, I assure you that when making Quake no one at id software knew how to strafe jump, and without strafe jumping Quake is as slow if not slower than CS. It's just that we found a bug that allows to travel very fast. No dev timed items either, so they had no idea the game could be complex Same happens with Blizzard, as I assure you the developers had like 1 APM and didn't know people could play 100 times faster, and with the intended 1 APM speed the gameplay is nowhere near the same.

Current PC games are not "made for casuals" (mobile games are). It's just that the developers added more refinements and features, while fixing bugs and game design mistakes from the past that we happen to like. Those refinements lead to games being easier to get into and with directed (holding hands) gameplay so that the players don't miss the fun parts, which sadly in turn leads games to have a lower ceiling and make high skilled players have less freedom. Current developers are not dumbing down their games on purpose: they are refining their games more and making them not as raw as they used to be, which in turn has the consequence of them not being as fun for the 1% of the players that used to abuse the bugs

For example, in current games strafe jumping is "fixed", removed because it is a bug can break the intended gameplay. Had Carmack found out about this bug before releasing Quake 1 I assure you he would have fixed/removed it, but luckily for us he found about it when making Quake 3 and by then players liked it. That's why he chose not to remove it, even though he wanted to. Or in SC, had Blizzard in the closed alpha found out some very few gifted players could play the game so well that they could win 1 against 10 matches, making the game be not fun for everyone that isn't Korean, then they would have made the refinement of restricting the game so that it didn't break the game for 99% of the players. Luckily for us testing wasn't as rigorous back then.

So, for another Quake 1 or SCBW to happen what's needed is that in lets say Overwatch players find some bug that allows us to strafe jump twice as fast as intended, and that players like that so much that the developers can't fix the bug without annoying players. The core game is fantastic already, just like Call of Duty's, League of Legends and so on are. What they need is the unintended ludicrous speed.

TBH that's why all Quake clones have failed in the past and will continue to do so. Developers mostly focus on having a fast paced multiplayer game, copying the bugged gameplay we like and even using the same movement techniques, but they never focus on having any substance nor originality. It's the same that happens with Call of Duty sequels, that since COD 4 they are all the same just with different names..

His argument about e-sport and competitive gaming is flawed alright, but I think yours flawed too. It's not about refinement or polished game design, and also not about fixing bux, so 1% can't abuse those... but about a beautiful and awesome mindset what made PC gaming a thing once, and what is deliberately getting rid of by selection of developers, including the current form of id software, and what is (imho) wrong.

I don't want another (60fps "bugfixed") Rage, but I want an awesome DOOM, real HELL with "ultra-realistic" graphics, and with a gameplay harder then DarkSouls on the hardest level, filled with zillion of smart and fast monsters flowing towards us (yes I want it all in good old coop!), and I don't want another QL (especially not the horse-shit 1.0 version they dared to release when the beta ended). I want the adrenalin-rush of Quake 1 deathmatch with gibs flying all over the place, the brutal weapons, the fast and furious action, and I want the awesome engine of quake 3, and the endless flow of beautiful gameplay, gamemode and total modifications what the best ever community made once...I want the freedom of PC gaming at its finest, thats what I want (and would like to pay for with good money).

Since gamepads aren't good for fast paced action, and especially suck balls against multiple enemies from all angles, developers chose to make all single player FPS games be slow, with one enemy at a time, maps have to be linear so the enemies are in front, no vertical angles and so on. I just described Doom 3, Doom 4, Rage and Quake 4 from id software, and every Call of Duty since COD 6.

Personally, I would love to play a new fast paced FPS with a well thought single player. No randomly generated maps, no multiplayer-only, no total linearity. The thing is I know Doom 4 won't deliver that, because it will be a multi platform release and that necessarily means slowing down and simplifying the game.

From what they recently showed us so far it looks like they're really trying to sit on both chairs and allow PC players to tweak the gameplay far enough from what console junkies normally expect. (We'll see how it turns out soonish.)

On a mildly unrelated node, Q4 was not slow and dumb because of the consoles: they simply fucked MP part completely and utterly. After v1.4.2 and community-provided competitive mods it (arguably) became quite playable and watchable. Too bad it was too late/not enough to breath the life in it...

All those paragraphs you've written doesn't change anything about what I said earlier, and I'm well aware of how strafe jumping first came about. All I'm trying to say is that Quake and SC were great esport games, very high skill and lots of time to master it. Compare that to games these days they take half the skill and half the time to master, with more emphasis on team based strategy and restricted individual skill cap.

True competitiveness in esports has degenerated into what it is today. Developers today didn't 'fix' strafe jumping for their games, they made a conscious decision to drop the skill ceiling. It was a well established fact that Q3 was considered the highest skill FPS in competitive gaming in the early 2000's, every game developer after that made the choice to dumb down their games intentionally and strafe jumping and advanced movement wasn't considered a bug that had to be fixed, it was a well established gameplay feature by then.

Developers haven't added more 'refinements' as you say, either. Replace 'refinements' with 'restrictions' and you're on the money.

Speaking of competitiveness best experiences I've had with MP games were not so much related to the game it self as much as overcoming certain skill ceilings as a new player and overcoming certain ceiling in the competitions (beating people in the same game).

You say modern games degenerate it, yet when you look at the amount of competitiveness in the skill limited games, it way outshines what is offered in the current arena shooter titles.

So what is wrong with that? Maybe it is us, we know about a higher ceiling and are limited! CPMA is harder to master than vq3, osp changed the balance slightly now compare what was run most actively as something to differentiate people by their skill levels?

We have had QuakeLive as a test, if someone takes an already made game and tries to provide people with an easier to access platform for competitive arena shooter. I've wasted both time and money and I don't regret it. I liked q3 and I liked quakelive and played them competitively. But there was always something that would push new player from the title. Maybe it is easy to start playing but the crutches are short term.

We have the new Doom as a different kind of test. If they do dumb down the gameplay, add some long term crutches (hack modules, progression, matchmaking, lobbies and customization) maybe they keep the player base interested long enough that some younger players start playing it competitively.

The only thing that I think would be needed is to find a way to provide steps to the competitiveness. Which skill level you are and how do you compete in it. Do you want to compete on a higher level and what that entails. Removing hack modules, then loosing loadouts, then loosing item timers, then playing with faster movements (a mode where everyone has the speed rune and air movement rune).

How do you get there? Id has one of the most competitive communities out there, movemakers, proffesional players. You can actually create those modes, and start organizing leagues/cups for the tiers.
That is for instance something that a community managers job would be.

Great post, one minor point, I'm pretty sure Carmack heard about strafe jumping from QW players, and absolutely definitely knew about strafe jumping in the days of Quake 2, I played that with him. Q3 was just the first time that we heard about them actually having a go at killing or massively nerfing it at one point (in Q3Test I think, I can't remember exactly) but then realised that it just wasn't fun if you did so.

No more long range hit scan weapons either... please god. Combat is so much more interesting when you're forced to be somewhat close to your opponent to guarantee decent damage...

It's almost like you missed that the railgun was nerfed and most players don't have 60 acc with it anyway.

I do wish they'd reversed the tighter MG spread that was introduced to try make the MG more attractive amongst the loadout choices though.

From some players perspectives, sure, not from others.

Even nerfed, a rail abuser easily beats people like me that gets bored of constant long range play.

I like what they did with the Static Rifle in DOOM.

If you just stand still it does a small amount of damage, albeit shooting faster, but if you run around with it out it charges up and then does a high(er) amount of damage. Then you have to re-charge it.

No camping some tiny pixels while waiting to get a cheap big damage hit before rushing off behind some wall or whatever.

If they combined that with a loud RG style hum and maybe some other giveaways like a laser point or infrared beam it might balance a bit better.

Yeah or just remove the gun entirely instead of formulating some convoluted way to make it palatable to people who don't like it. It's more a matter of making a game that's basic design doesn't necessitate the presence of a railgun. Quakeworld, for instance, didn't need a railgun.

I find this so funny because the usual complaints about the railgun for YEARS have been that it was nerfed, and it should be returned to the 100 it was in Q2/Q3 or at the very least 90.

And those complaints were absolutely totally drowned out like a tsunami by the calls to nerf the rocket launcher or the lightning gun.

I don't like railgun but if it's present I'd rather it be some retarded 100 damage shit where it doesn't feel weak. I'd take stronger LG and RL too. More frags is fun.

Game would have been a lot more fun without a rail gun. Hell, I might have even played it seriously (Q3) - probably would have been a better game than QW which is saying something. And with faster rockets initially like they have now.

Long range hit scan play is boring as fuck. When I see two morons hiding behind pillars long range and randomly spamming out shots towards each other, which by the way happens a fucking lot, I usually just disconnect because that shit is fucking boring and stupid. There is absolutely nothing dynamic about a situation like that and they are far too common. Compared to combat in close and it's night and day. The dynamic play is literally forced in close and it's what makes this game great. It's what makes almost every other shooter that exists a pile of fucking garbage too. So yeah, some of us would really rather not see that gun in this game.

Rails is fine. 2 weapon games are boring as fuck

So it will be a shitty single player with a half assed multiplayer that feels uninspired (like Q4).

Instead of doing the obvious right move (restarting Q3) they will churn out another generic single player snorefest with brown walls everywhere (Q1) or boring ass tech maps (Q2), instead of the amazing mixture of aesthetics of Q3.

Yes. It obviously wasn't like Q3A enough.

People dont play Quake anymore because we havent had a new installment in the quake series for 11 years. The last proper new game was Quake 4 which was a big ol failure. So the last, well recieved quake game came out 17 years ago.

Other old game series like Starcraft and Counterstrike have had much more recent sequels that are positively recieved bya large chunk of the fanbase.

But if Quake 5 is good, I hope it hasnt been too long. Ideally you would bring out your next multiplayer title in the series when the old one starts to dwindle, but Quake has done more than just dwindle.
