So, out of curiosity after a short research on the topic I've concluded some things, correct me if I am wrong since I don't have the game.

Snap Map gives the possibility to balance out weapon damage, movement speed, health and armor modifiers for a map. It's possible to make Duel, FFA for 4 players and 2vs2 TDM with score/time limits, announcers and so on. Unfortunately, the game cannot be modded, meaning you can just manipulate the given resources, you can't change the geometry of models and do not have full extent of possibilities to alter the physics of the game, only what is allowed through Snap Map, for example, movement speed.

Considering it's still an early release, the functionality of Snap Map can only increase, it's bad that the game cannot be modded, but it also can't get any worse. It has the flexibility necessary to possibly create an environment the Quake community so much desires on a very popular title with a quite successful single player.

The only thing left for those who own Doom 4 is to start doing something with it, unite under one banner, agree on and make some standards for the game-play you wish to produce in the context the game allows and popularize those maps by just playing.

Hell, why not start a community within the Doom 4 and have a voice together and ask ID for the functionality you want for either Snap Map or the game itself. It's kinda better than sitting on this forum and being unhappy that the perfect Quake is not served on a silver plate.

has there been any "official" statement regarding modability yet? i mean, they might still release an SDK like in older games, right?

doom as it is now, does not support competitive gaming at all. i think it's not possible to make something like OSP with snapmap, but that's what the game would need... :-/

I haven't found a direct statement that the game cannot be modded, but several sources have quite convincing indications that there have been statements of such nature.

The games that currently contain the largest competitive scenes initially weren't developed to support professional gaming in no context whatsoever, in fact most of them were very poorly balanced to start with and if you'd take a look at how, for example, Starcraft, Counter-Strike, League of Legends looked like at their initial stages of life, then you wouldn't recognize anything remotely close to what we consider viable for competing in a sense we take for granted right now.

Those games have withstood the test of time in terms of popularity and dedicated communities that pretty much created the professional scenes around them despite how they looked at that moment and time, for example, Starcraft was so unbalanced at one point that it was literally impossible to win as a Terrain against Zerg if a 6-pool rush was initiated, the defending Terrain simply couldn't possibly have units out in time, players were losing to unbeatable strategies, but they still held large tournaments despite those flaws.

What happened? Blizzard saw the potential and in a couple of years with a couple of patches tweaked the game to what is now known as arguably the best and most popular RTS ever made, then came international tournaments and well, just Youtube Blizzcon and see it for yourself.

Those were the players that carried those games where they are right now, the developers just decided to use the potential of the communities behind the games at some point and provided additional support.

So, if the players will cross their hands and say "this is shit and not competitive", abandon the game and wait for Quake 5 on a silver plate, then I am very certain that nothing will change.

loadouts and no bunnyhopping, meh, but man, the gore and explosions look great. i almost want to blow 80+55 dollars just to have a new deathmatch game to blow guys up in. no not really, that's a ludicrous amount of money.

but there's not enough deathmatch games, too many team shooters with respawn times.

you are forgeting the fun of snap map ... to me its like warcraft 3 defense tower mods :D

There is a file that has 2 cvars set to zero, and those are if I remember correctly:
- sv_strafejumping 0
- sv_rampjump 0

If those two were set to 1, and this double speed which was seen in some mods allready, maybe even a possibility to disable double jetpack jump...the MP part of the game would be instant success.....only problem is that the game is super heavy for even mid-high pc...

althought with mod support I'm sure mappers would come up with optimizations, lighter texture packs, easier on the details maps and it would run smooth even on low-mid range pc's. I dont have problems with high detail gameplay, but for fast mp maps, enviroments should be a bit less detailed.

Althoug the game is still rather young, I'm just hoping after the summer it will be in much better state than at the moment, with mod support, some kind of scene maybe, a tons of good snapmap custom games for fun, that is a good thing just like blizzard arcade, there will be for sure good stuff, but for competitive part we still need more freedom with mod tools, support and strong community.

How long did testing for osp, q4max, counterstrike, enemy territory lasted? should I name few more maybe? no because it took months and months and months, but if there is a way to mod it people would test it and play it.

Cool on console yes, on pc there should be some tweaking with mechanics for jetpack if strafe and ramp are enabled... When you lose and when you don't lose the speed, when your jump is registered as a jump for strafe and not as djj and so on, or just to be used as 1st or 2ndary "module/ability(with cooldown even)/item"

Arena shooters have allways been seen as fast paced, tricks or not, advanced movement, ect. but not current MP which is so slow and unappealing, slower than OW, slower than free UT development, slower than toxikk, slower than cod games and titanfall, and at this state it's just to slow for anyone to consider it as a serious MP experience with high price.

I played alpha and beta a lot, and let me tell you, there were like 200 situations where I could've dodged, moved away, confuse the enemy and ect. but you are so slow with limited options of movement, only thing you can do in that situation is either +b, use djj which makes you a flying unmovable even easier target, or just strafe left and right with some crouching. That is a very limiting and dissatisfying mechanic....heck even in black ops 3 when you use djj and point the direction you want to go the jetpack gives you more speed and rapid air movement, what does doom's djj do ? It places a marioworld brick below your feet to jump one more time....just awfull.

I meant players, not moders. I don't expect people to spend a lot of time trying to perfect their movement skills and see it as a positive thing. They sure want things to be faster but I don't think they want it to only be faster if they put in the efforts. Simply increasing the speed can work to make the game feel better because it's easy and you don't need to spend X hours learning before the game gets fun.

I think it's a very stupid thing to do. video games are a much newer, separate market. if there is little to no difference between a game and a movie you won't buy it twice. marketing people always want to open new segments, check out BMW/Mercedes/Volkswagen/Audi catalogue.

so, saying this game is only 10h long is an understatement.

Increasing the speed feels wrong in this game, it just doesn't feel right to move like that. Adding strafe jumping along would be enough IMO, that would give you more speed.

You can get a low-detail experience using the command "vt_lodBias 10", which makes the game use the lowest detailed models and textures possible. It makes the environments a lot less detailed and increases the frame rate significantly.

ultra violence and up you have to actually think about what to use ammo on in SP campaign

you need glory kills so save ammo, and still have to leave imp`s that are up the walls or running away etc etc etc when you hit a gore nest

problem with gory kills is you can get hit by other enemies when u r trying to perform it, and you only need to take 2 hits without armor and ur dead

I've never had that happen. Feels like they're waiting for you to finish the glory kill before they attack you any further.

you still have to pay attention though with gory kills if you stay in the same line to another enemy as before ...

Multiplayer got outsourced to Certain Affinity. Look at the list of their games and you know what is going on.

Yeah, because [id] themselves is so against shitty features in their games. Seems clear to me with Quakelive and now Doom that loadouts and some kind of spray-n-pray/HMG are staples in [id] software games. Which is why I really hope they don't touch the Quake franchise anymore, especially if they're thinking about a reboot. Come up with a new ip if they want, but please, please leave Quake out of it.

I trust the current crop of [id] personnel about as far as I can throw them. Stop shitting on some of the good times and memories of my youth guys. Just say no to reboots.

yeah i dont even know why that article even exists. its practically stating ferraris in the 90's could have 500 bhp under the hood, but ferraris in 2016 dont even have 5000 bhp therefor ferrari sucks.

They modded those ferrari's, most of the engines were like v6/v8, I don't imagine hitting 500+ BHP would be a problem. Also depends if they quote at the wheels or flywheel.

I've 3 minutes of ql in the last 2 weeks and shit ton of doom.

I was watching carnage's and stoked's streams, and seeing guys get gibbed with shotguns and chainguns was just too satisfying.

What's holding your interest? Snapmap? Multiplayer?

multiplayer. i havent touched single player yet.

its mostly that there's no lag or warping what so ever in doom.

the weapons feel good.
the modifiers are weird but combat is pretty fun.

i dont like 2 weapons only, but overall it satisfies my fragging needs.

I'm sure it'll be dead soon but i'll enjoy while it lasts.

yep, same. some guy from ireland was all over the place, and a few others with poor connections to the server. difficult as fuck to hit but they didnt seem to have any issues. the netcode kinda seems similar to quakelives actually, unlagged and getting hit round a corner when ur own connection is really good :x

It's not unlagged server side, it's just client side.

The singleplayer for this game was pretty good.

So I've been using double SG's as load outs and a personal teleporter. I've gotten so good at teleporting behind enemies and gunning them down.

Good fun, would recommend.
