most people who made games in the nineties didn't even finish uni like jc and cliffyb. i aint pretending to be cliffyb but i mean they bombed rage and quake live with that attitude to game development. doom is nice but still i cant see why a less experienced team cant do something similar.

When they were 18-19 those two had made plenty of games by their own already on their spare time, and also were already working in companies of the field. That's the requirement.

Lesson to be learned is to start making games and building a career before trying to land a job that requires experience, instead of going to an interview to say "I have done nothing other than play videogames pls I want to make videogames pls idk how and have worked in none but pls".

its just overstating how games are made, companies like id proved to me that games aren't just about qualifications and so on. if i just wanted to make games i would rather just sell them on greenlight.

what we seen from id for the past 15 years are mediocre titles at best, not best of breed like it was in the nineties, games in general became too Hollywood-like where each game is hyped for not much reason.

press scores can be manipulated and so on, i really don't see much games that surprise me for more than a 15 minute quick look,

Doom (4) is an amazing game, despite id having launched crap for the past 15 years, precisely because the company renewed the staff. For example Carmack was replaced by the Crysis engine guy, and it really positively shows both in game engine and in gameplay.

yeah i agree somewhat but on the big picture it really doesn't make me feel like i want to play it, ofc it's just my opinion. it looks like a good game overall, but its still kinda like watching titanic and wondering why so many people find that movie interesting to watch.

i remember when doom 3 was shown at e3 i so wanted to play that game but now when i look back at it... i did just a single run through the game and that wasn't very long.

its not just id its plenty others that make these games where you wonder why so much attention given to these games when all it takes is a couple hours to beat the game and then its all over.

don`t have to draw all the wrinkles and veins to begin with, thats what bump and tessellation is for, so a normal model should easily be able to strip down to 1000 poly`s, and then clean it up in maya/lightwave/max etc

john carmack and cliffyb started their own game companies. no one is stopping you from doing that -- all it takes is devoting 100% of your time and energy to your work, which might be unrealistic for someone who's not even willing to get a college degree.

I used to believe this 10 years ago, but problem is everytime you try and rock the boat with something new, it somehow sinks. (Stakes and air speed in PK, reloading and shadows in D3, Sheildgun and pills in UT2K3, crouchsliding and raised viewheight in Q4)

For better or worse, Q3 base design was tested and perfected by id, and top Quake players, following the release of Q1 and Q2.

It didn't just come out of nowhere. It evolved to where it is today. And while I certainly want to see new maps, and stuff like the updated QL rail dmg, I wouldn't want to see the franchise risked again like those other titles by trying to fix things that weren't broken to begin with. (Quite the opposite, since everything had been perfected up to that point)

I've moved on to overwatch its way more fun. Done with Quake not going back. :) Also, moved away from reflex also I would rather just play Rocket League and Overwatch instead of DM FPS anymore at this point. F-it.

Doom single player feels great in terms of mouse input and responsiveness imo. I hope they give Quake another shot.

But whatever, you won't get to see that happening even if a new quake came out and has aircontrol, purists are gonna love it because it's a quake game- they will find things to love in it simply because they would actually give it a chance. Warsow has aircontrol
Reflex has aircontrol

Diabotical (as we seen) will have aircontrol
CS:GO surf is all about aircontrol

these scenes (diabotical is not a thing yet) have way more players and without a doubt the speed running community loves aircontrol.

So yeah, if you think vq3 actually has something to say is because ql had a pro scene, that's why all the fanboys have that sort biased thinking about what is competitive and what is not, they think it's good because they have HISTORY. Just like the fucking church if you ask me.

This topic is really fucking hilarious, the truth is that the movement system is not what makes a popular competitive game after all, there are so many things around it that the movement alone is absolutely irrelevant (when it's playable and when it isn't - two good examples are UT, cos quakers say it's shit, and that excessiveplus mod, crazy shit flying all over the place but it had a really active scene at some point).

Yet you find countless threads around esr crying about why quake is dying or why it failed, each comment brings a whole different reasoning. The game is just fucking old, that's all, and despite being so ancient I don't think many games from that age still have a relatively large playerbase so I don't know what's going on around here, maybe esr's mind is clouded out of jellyness cos other games are going huge and they feel like their game kinda deserves it.

New multiplayer-centric Quake is quite possible, but I think it will be rather different to what ESR demographic expects.

Ironically, I think decision makers at id are now faced with a hard dilemma. If they make the new Quake as Q3 reboot with better visuals, they're risking not getting enough newcomers to make it sustainable in the long run and therefore commercially feasible. If they make it as a new multiplayer experience with Quake franchise on top (let's say Overwatch-inspired class-based FFA-centric shooter), they're risking to get a huge backlash from old school fans.

They're basically between sledge and hammer at the moment, so I'm quite curious what they'll come up with. May be entirely new IP?

It can be Overwatch-like in some aspects and still be set in dark fantasy lore, for example. And speaking of Overwatch mechanics, if they borrow character-based stuff and place it in top of traditional deathmatch, leaving core quakish stuff intact, that could actually have lots of potential if done properly.

it's impossible because being multiplayer-centric on a franchise that lost its appeal 10 years ago is too risky.

game really needs a good singleplayer to piggyback the multiplayer on. the better the singleplayer, the more buzz for the game and people to hop into multiplayer.

I would argue that Quake franchise was always praised and remembered for its multiplayer, even though there were singleplayer games in the series. Doom is an old singleplayer franchise, but they still decided to reboot it, and did that rather successfully. Maybe they're currently watching what Blizzard is bringing to the table and taking notice. Fun multiplayer game can generate steady income for years, if monetized properly. May be after Doom proves to be commercially successful, they'll decide to follow this route too. But may be not.

You do have a point, but it's not as black and white as you present it. Games also need dedicated players to sustain a population in long term, the observable phenomenon with many games to date is that they attract a lot of casuals, newcomers since they are designed to do exactly that for money milking purposes, but those titles get forgotten quite fast, because they fail to attract a dedicated, and most importantly, lasting community due to the lack of re-playability value in terms of game-play.

I think a new title in Q3 context, if not exactly the same, then with quite a similar skill ceiling can be very successful with the right type of marketing. If the game will be presented and advertised as some sort of regular shooter experience, then the casual players will be in for a great disappointment, but if marketed correctly as difficult, challenging by principle, then I think it has the chance to attract enough dedicated players to sustain a viable population.

As for the marketing, one of two examples I'll provide to illustrate the point, Dark Souls was advertised exactly like that with the slogan "Prepare to die" and it was a major success despite it being watered down for the next titles to attract a broader range of audience. A second example for the importance of correct advertising would be a Fallout, Fallout 2 mod called Fallout Online - FOnline as the short and official name of the mod due to copyright issues. In short Fallout 1 and 2 on a unique engine created for multi-player purposes. It was never a particularly popular game in general, but for a mod quite impressive. Whenever the mod would be advertised in the modding forums, communities it attracted a lot of interest of the dedicated Fallout community which praised the quality of the older titles rather than the new. The mod was extremely difficult for newcomers for numerous reasons, but initially and even throughout years of its existence it was presented as the ultimate Fallout Online experience in the spirit of the original Fallout titles, but it was absolutely anything, but that. It was the perfect formula for a huge backlash from the newcomers unable to grasp the concept of the game and tolerate the difficulty, but everything marketed about it (as much as it could with no funding) pointed out to the player to expect quite a regular MMORPG experience with a cool theme. And that was a major failure, mainly due to poor presentation.

It is quite clear to me that in order to create a sustainable playerbase you need to break up quake elitism. In order to bring new players on a top level they need to have a chance in the first place and that means there needs to be a reset in some form. decade long players will always have an advantage but if you change movement, weapons etc to a certain extent you create a common ground to learn.

I dont want another q3, I dont need another q3 I play ql regularly and have no plans to stop. However a new part in the franchise intrigues me.

I mean I get they tended to fuck things up... but the new Doom I'm loving. The multiplayer is a bit lacking but there's potential if it's modified here and there a bit. The single player is really enjoyable though and definitely worthy of being called Doom.

Doom with some work on the MP could be pretty cool. Not for every single esr purist out there, but decent.

They already made good Quake multiplayer in the past. It's just hoping they copy a lot of it. They can make a good single player experience, draw people in, and throw them into quake live style arena multi. Just have beginner servers with timers or some shit.

And gore. Everyone will have lots and lots of gore.

Not a huge amount needs to be modified to get the Doom MP where it should be (at least in my opinion). A lot of the pieces are already in place:

- Put in the single player's strafe movement. Towards the latter point of the SP game you get air movement which feels really satisfying. If you got a speed boost, it's basically Painkiller/CPM esque.

- Get rid of loadouts. This one is a no brainer.

- Balance weapons a bit. The sniper rifle charge is stupid. Scrap it. The rocket launcher is underwhelming.

- Modify the maps a bit more to have weapon drops as well as more armor spawns. Most of it just seems to be small shard areas. Armors spawn every minute from what I can tell which is meh.

Hope they don't outsource the multiplayer to a different developer like they did with DOOM.

They should do what they did with the new Doom by recreating Quake 1's lovecraftian style in a modern way (which they have successfully proved they CAN do with doom) Then with the multiplayer they should have the noob friendly team fortress style modes to 'lure' new players in, but have old school style modes for official big bucks tournaments.

This is what kind of happened with Q3. Many ppl might not have thought about this but in my opinion mods like RA3 hooked noobs in to the game (including me originally) then the skilled few who watched the leagues and aspired to more competitive play stepped up to TDM etc, but this doesn't happen without a noob friendly mod to begin with.

Just one thing: ideally, id should come out with not just another TF clone as a main mode but with something completely fresh and different (ofc, keeping all the Quake advantages - fast pace, frenzy non-stop action, great and resourceful movement, acrobatics-style combats, mighty powerups, etc). The thing is that way the audience would look at this big triangle of major FPS with CS, OW an Quake to choose from and Quake will have something unique to propose.

Yeah I guess realistically speaking maybe there *is* a game mode that doesn't exist yet and that we haven't thought of that blends old school with new school. Either way, anything that provides a popular foundation for noobs in the game is a good thing.
