it feels like 8-10 players is better than 12 on the average ffa maps when there are so many people with good mgs. that would be the area to analyse for next tourney i suppose.

Huh? Why? No.

Because:

1) Even if you have 8 players only on the maps you'll be spawned on before you can get to health after you've killed someone, provided that the health is up. On average people are running around with 40 or something hp after a fight and given the spawn system and that people hit 38%+ mg it is more often impossible to get there.

So I think people who are good at killing should be rewarded more for getting the kills.

2) It would add another meta about looking other players as health stations and about stealing the potential drops. Close combat fights would not be as punishing meaning if you are good at close combat you can have a big fight and potentially still come out as a winner if you follow the fights better than others. Currently if it gets messy it's just everyone dying.

So I think it would give more interesting and exciting big scale fights where the best players can show more interesting frag runs.

The problem is when roughly everybody is kind of similarly skilled on the server, so anybody can be the winner from the start. In this case you are just putting extra luck in the mix while removing / reducing some of the important core elements of the gameplay at the same time.

To be honest, during about the ~11,000 FFA I played in the last 6-7 years, I never felt that the default modus operandi needs any further tweaking - the original system worked just fine in all skill-range (except when there's a huge skill-gap between the players on the map - but even then it's ok; rape was always an organic part of Quake's gameplay).
Players who are good at killing usually getting rewarded accordingly to their deeds. There's also the fact that the ability of staying alive during the apocalypse is a really important asset of skills - including hp drops in the meta totally messes up the balance and flow of the game; pickups are in their places for a reason. You need effort to get them or just defend them / lingering around the area until they spawn.

Maybe I'm too conservative in this matter, but besides a fitting map pool, FFA should only contain the vanilla settings; 8 player, pummel-mg spawn, no item timers, no unified ammo, no hmg, yes BFG. fraglimit 50, timelimit 15, default VQL, default power ups. And a DEU server. ))

The problem with 8 player limit is that it works on some maps and on others it doesn't. Overkill for example is way too big for 8 so you'll get couple players grinding good spots and camping and other people are sneaking around. We had this in the group stages where on 2 maps we had to play with 6 players and it was just slow and boring with everyone with a brain camping. When you have too many players per map then you can't really get anywhere because of the mg cess from spawners. I don't mind any of this in pub FFA where I prefer 16 players and it's fine because of the skill difference, but with decent to semi-decent players it's way too hard to do anything.

And I don't agree with the notion that HP drops would add more random because its intent is to counter the random that the spawn system provides. I'm talking about maybe a 25hp drop which is not too big to make you OP but big enough to help you survive a random spawner while you're trying to get to that 50hp or mega. The main items are still more important, it's just a small boost. With HP drops you could have a rigid player size on different sized maps.

The other possible way to fix it would be to switch away from having mg as the default weapon. I've proposed nail gun to be a possible replacement because of its working mechanics, but I have not tested this outside of duel.

I don't see any reason why your proposed settings should be de facto settings. They were originally devised by 1200 elo players and 1200 elo players in mind. I imagine had ID soft made any other settings default you'd post those settings instead.

I do agree on that huge FFA maps like Overkill or dm12 are playing better with more than 8 players. However 16 is still too much imo, 12 would be a fair middle road to take.

It seems that we are talking past each other. What I suggest is that HP drops are reducing the importance of the very basic staying alive skill, hence I don't like it. It's fun trying to do ridiculous stuff after some experience in all game modes and when it happens, it's just nice. Those are times which really make a game worth playing.

I bet you did some QW before. Rawness and totally imbalanced weapon system - it's just the core basics, amplified. The spawns are on the same page. What I'm pointing at is that imo QL is already "too" balanced, trying to be fair at all times, more cautious about the player than its predecessor - while life and Quake in its definite core isn't (and shouldn't). Maybe it would be better if we left some of it's "unfairness" in its place.

Nailgun is an interesting idea as a starting weapon, but I'm too sided with the already existing mg.

16 is too much because of the cess. You kill someone then get cessed down. Now you say 12 but I just played a tourney where it was 12 and it was way too many on half of the maps. Rigid player size is not dynamic enough to fit all needs. The maps would need to readjust the items on them to fit different player sizes and HP drop on death would be an easy way to do it because it scales relative to the amount of players: more players, more frags, more health around.

And I don't agree on it reducing any kind of survival skills. In a pro FFA you don't have time for your "survival skills" because of the 40% mg accuracies. It just adds another tactic that allows people to play more aggressively.

QW sucked donkey balls IMO tho :) and the settings only worked because ID forced them. You don't see many 8 player FFA servers atm and it should be a telling sign.

Anyways, no setting so all this goes in vain :( Can't have cool stuff to even try if it works or not in QL. I'm completely content with the idea that my ideas might suck in practice.
