maybe not "boring", but stuff like TDM has so much going on it's hard to watch closely, it's more just mildly entertaining, while duel you can actually follow the thought processes, strategies, etc.

CTF is easy to follow, it has many parallels to any sport with 2 nets and a ball. Blizzard are actually completely retarded for intending to push OW into esports without CTF.

CTF with minimap for spectators is the way to go

a minimap is a good start for a better spectator hud.... but even with a minimap it would be extremly hard to follow current ctf games in my opinion....

i remember watching the ctf games last quakecon and i could hardly follow the action with all the pov switches.... and i play ctf almost exclusively; fazz' stream before quakecon was much more entertaining because you had only 1 pov, because he was playing a "comprehensive" position (like RA on ironworks) so there is a bit of def and a bit of att + you had the voice communication with his teammates

but i don't think that 1 pov per game is the way to go anyway...

now, if we're talking about ctf as "main-mode" in QC.. the different abilites from different champions can really make it easier to follow the game....
because then you have champions who are more suited for defense and other are more suited for offense... so the spectator knows... aha ... "Nyx" has her ability ready and goes for a flagrun or stuff like that...

other additions to a new spec HUD could be:

- replay function
- freecams on critical positions like flags or powerups (IF there will be PU's)
- possibly a 3rd person cam?
- maybe a UPS counter?

Truth is you should watch game modes in 3rd person. That way you lose the pov of the shots tho. Imagine watching a futbol game and being forced to swap to players pov to see how players control the ball and how they hit it. But from the overhead camera you see dots that just have the ball in their vicinity. This is as today the biggest problem fps have compared to dota or sc. CS is having success on this because thw game is not continuos and there's a set up period where you can show the map fullscreen or show a shot from above, then switch to a key player when the action starts. Overall slow pace helps too.

There's a lot of stuff that could be done. For instance offense/defence indicators for players on spechud based on where they are on the map, push and group def indicator based on how many players are on a certain part of map(2/3 in enemy base, or whatever). Having short halftimes(1-2 mins after certain number of caps or time) where you could show highlights. I'm sure if 10 people put 3 hours on brainstorming for spec features, you could get amazing results

The point is that CTF is not going to save Quake. Every other game and its mama has a CTF mode. If Quake's main mode is CTF, then congrats because it's no more special than any other shitty game and it's not going to entice new players.

I've been advocating this for years. It's a good idea, yes.

Only problem is, how can you be sure you get the right one? Maybe they should test the waters for a year or so, and then decide on the one mod to support.

Practically all games are shipped with one main mode. It's just that in Quake the players demand to have dozens of modes, customization and callvotes for everything, effectively splitting the playerbase themselves and shifting the focus of the development force.

Lets assume there's only one gametype at first, focused on capturing a point. I assure you the vocal minority of Q3 duelers (5% of players) will demand a duel gametype, then ZTN and other classic maps, callvote to remove abilities which makes rebalancing necessary, and so on.

That is exactly what happened to the initially simple game that was QL, with the consequences of wasting development time reaching map authors, focusing all resources on supporting a dead gametype (duel in FPS games has no more than 500 players across all games) and splitting the playerbase in 20 gametypes as this process repeats.

Today's focus is because of the QC announcement from yesterday night; a game that I'd like to play someday. But really, besides today I don't care about the Quake community at all, outside Twitch chat (some who I have met in real life due to that initial interaction) and my current and former Quake pals that I met back when I played Quake.

The rest are all strangers that amount to 500 people globally (exactly 560 according to Steam), of which at best 100 of those are mere nicknames in this site. Who cares, both of us are likely to never meet or even interact online outside ESR (wish you the best though despite not giving a crap about you :3).

TL;DR CS certainly has more than one mode, and what we know as defuse is not the most played one at all.

Ideally yeah, everyone would be into the same mode. Everyone would also have ideally been into the same Arena FPS for the past 5 years instead of being split into 20 different games, and then 5 different game modes.

But the reality is that nobody is going to consolidate themselves into one game mode in one game because everyone wants it to be their favourite mode and their favourite game and they wont accept anything less. And I dont blame those people, I'm the same.

Duel in particular is very problematic, because it's a separate world in itself. If the main mode is team based and standardizing is the goal, then duel just shouldn't be a part of QC.

If you limit it that much like you have suggested you risk making it too boring for players who might not like that particular mode, they might like TDM or CTF better than objective based, etc.

Doom4 got very boring very fast because all anyone played was TDM, I couldn't get a game of any other mode when I tried.

Duel just takes too much development time away, due to being too different, for something that at best 5% of the playerbase plays. Devs should focus on the main gametype first then in the fun related side mods, but never try to make two games in one. In previous Quakes that lack of focus didn't matter, as the community was the one that made everything, but this time around the developer will, therefore priorities will be of the essence.

Plus in QC implementing it would likely mean duel would be the competitive gametype (always happens in Quakes), which is a wasted opportunity in a team-based game since the main gametype (chosen by the developer this time around) is the one that should be featured.

The community doesn't decide the main competitive mode, tournament organisers do.

You can run both duel and team modes together, duel being available doesn't mean that team modes aren't the focus or that tournament organisers need to pick only duel tournaments.

The way I experienced team modes and duel throughout the life of Q3/QL was that they complimented each other. The positioning and timing skills learned from duel can be applied to TDM and CTF, and the movement and rocket jumping practice in CTF and CA can be applied to duel and make you faster around the map, etc.

In current "e-sports" tournament organizers do not decide such things. The developers do, as they are the ones that directly fund and host the tournaments. It's not 1999 anymore; like QL did operate (due to being a side project) and hence why it failed when ESL decided to stop supporting games without self funding that weren't popular enough.

Both gametypes can be run at tournaments yes, but there's finite development resources. Supporting a separate gametype from the rest (duel against all team modes) means there will be less resources assigned to the main gametype. Again, all current games have a main gametype, unlike QL and previous Quakes, which is a big reason why they failed.

Any how many of the CA, TDM and CTF players loved watching duel despite not playing it as their main mode? The team mode players in the AU Quake community watched more duel than I ever did, and all I used to play was duel. Duel always had far more people watching than actively playing.

I don't understand the resource thing you're talking about. Instead of making 10 different team modes where most people won't touch half of them, make 4 team modes and 1 duel.

QL (and FPS dueling) never had more than 10,000 viewers. Not enough to fund a single event, not enough of an impact to spend a ton of resources making a whole separate gametype from the rest.

Duel is very much unpopular in FPS games that feature it, therefore featuring it in mainly team-based games is a waste of resources. That's why successful FPS games do not have duel, and that's a decade long trend.

What companies do nowadays in their main projects is having a main gametype, and the rest are merely ruleset variations. Same maps and same gameplay across all; not what we call mods. They really have one gametype, not 4. CS GO has one, Overwatch has one, CoD and Halo have one, QL has four proper mods. Guess which made the mistake..

For example take the Halo games, which were made by the developer behind QC, Saber Interactive. If they don't even bother making mod-specific maps for team modes, then they won't bother making duel.

The LoL example does not apply because it's not a separate gametype developed by Riot. Riot did not waste resources making a separate map, balancing heroes and so on for that gametype. LoL has one balance and uses the same assets across all maps.

My point is to not waste resources, whether with 10 mods or whether with 4. That's why current games focus in only one, including the FPS games I listed. For example Riot at one point created a second gametype, called Dominion, which was a mistake and a waste of resources because the map was retired due to few people playing it. Even focusing on only two gametypes is something the most popular game in the world can't pull off, and you want four in a Quake game.

Who cares about the game itself. QL has exactly 560 players across all mods, according to Steamcharts. With that you don't pay one employee's salary for a single month.

And again, we both know the majority of those brave 560 don't play duel regularly and that they didn't buy the game to play duel. What QL duelers have to offer is maybe $1,000 in game sales. Rather not focus a single penny into targeting them, as even $1,001 of resources would be a waste.

Totally wrong analysis. Making maps takes very little bit of the budget, while using (hypotetically) just a basic character for duel mode wouldn't take a single dollar of the budget.

Duel has to be the SECOND focus of Id Software right now. We just don't have the players\watchers base, but with a new game there will be more people playing it.

duel as main mode might give the game a "long" living esports scene, but nothing more. the gametype appeals to pretty much noone (in terms of remarkable numbers), 10min of direct comparisson to somebody else is nothing a lot of ppl enjoy or want. especially not if mindgames are so important - most casuals and amateurs don't want to time items and stuff, they also don't want to be raped for not timing items. ppl primarily play fps to land nice shots and stuff.
i think if it goes for duel as main gt it will have the same fate as ql. having nice tournaments for a niche (top of the top players) inside a niche (duel) inside a niche (arena fps) doesn't make the game a success. on short term this duel-esports thing might get and keep quite some non-duel ppl interested, but not as much as it would if the gametype they played (and hence the skills they developed/will develope themselves) was th3 sh1t.
and by the way there is nothing like THE _GAME for ctf yet. No single one that has nice movement+comnbat mechanics that make it epic and is popular at the same time. allthough a lot of ppl seem to like the principle of it.

you understand that noone is going to sponsor a triple lan tournament of the same game in a couple of different modes, right? overwatch has 1 mode, counterstrike has 1 mode, mobas are self explanatory. a game is a game. tdm is already out there, twice. counterstrike is team based, overwatch is team based. you have rocket league, whatever it is, it's team based. duel arena fps is not out there. but it could be. you could have quake tournaments in duel AND TDM format and that could possibly work. but to force tdm or even ctf as a main mode while neglecting duel only to get fucked and shadowed by the already established market dominators such as the ones mentioned above sounds completely fucked up and would be a waste of a potentially good esport title.

i never claimed there should be 3 tournament modes. i just spoke out against duel. there are already at least 6 team based esport games out there, claiming there can't be seven/one more sounds pretty random to me. Rocket League has a duel mode too, by the way. But, oh surprise, it's very unpopular compared to their team modes.

Making a new Quake with a focus on duel will attract QL's duel crowd alright, but nobody else. Even among Quake players, those who like playing duel are a fairly small minority. But heh there are people here on Esr that would argue the majority of QL players aren't Quake players. If you make a game that's basically only played for tournaments, there won't be tournaments for long.

I think Quake Champions stands a better chance by promoting duel and being the definitive 1v1 FPS than they do if they try to compete with CSGO and Overwatch.

The team based FPS scene is saturated and they would be competing with the likes of Valve and Blizzard. Paladins and Battleborn are already feeling the sting of trying to do that. Lawbreakers is going to give it a shot soon.

1v1 FPS has been ignored by the AAA world for 10 years and we've survived off indie quake clones. Theres no data to suggest people wouldnt latch onto a proper AAA attempt at a 1v1 game because there havent been any in recent years

Even when Quake was the online multiplayer game duel was a tiny fraction of the population. There's zero demand for duel games, which is why no developers looking to make money makes them.

Since Q3 we've had UT2k3/4, Doom 3, Painkiller, UT3, Quake 4, Quake Live and UT4 from proper developers. So pretty much throughout the 2000s there were lots of games with a traditional duel mode and most had a focus on that mode competitively. Did it work? Nope.

In the 2010s we've had lots of people making their own, deathmatch games, which have largely focused on duel and none of them have caught people's attention in any major way. Even the new UT, which is actively in development by a huge developer, on the next generation of the biggest engine and completely free isn't getting much notice despite the tradionalist approach.

On the other hand you have all sorts of big and indie developers creating team based games and finding success. Overwatch just released and was instantly a huge success in its own right despite a supposedly saturated market, it didn't just cut a huge slice out of the pie... It made a bigger pie.

Those are very good points. The reason Quake lived so long was because it could compete with bigger games by being cheaper to organize tournaments for, thus being on life support stronger.

Maybe teamgames would give a bigger playerbase, but it won't be big enough to compete with Dota, CSGO and LoL.

Duel focus in a class-based game? Sure Quake is quite unique in it's history as a duel-based game. But I also feel it's one reason of why it eventually lost it's playerbase. In a team mode you have 4-6 players usually and that likely makes the community 2-3x bigger. There still might be a duel mode, but a wide playerbase is a requirement. It surely is a requirement from a profit point of view...

They might be working on a concept that is neither CTF or TDM. But I dont know really. CTF is easier to follow for spectators and would perhaps be the best way to go if the choose between the 2.

Considering they revealed quite a lot I'm surprised they didnt say anything about game modes. I'm hoping we get this kinda info during Quakecon. In the end it's they who decide, but i suggest listetning to the community, both the hardcore quake and the other gaming communities, aswell as casual communities. They mention casuals being able to play the game and have fun, implying some sort of matchmaking system.

as fun and skillful quake dueling in all of its flavours, especially vq3, it's undoubtedly a factor of it dying off..too punishing for newer players unless they really don't mind taking a beating for awhile.

Why do you guys even take the possibility into account that there will be ctf/tdm/duel? With those abilities it will probably be about different objectives on different maps just like OW. NTF-Style gameplay would work as well and could be awesome, but I think they will go with an OW-Clone. Hell, I bet you even have to kill creepwaves and at the end destroy the enemy teams fountain or retarded crap like that...

Well, out of TDM, CA, Domination... what team based gametype would be easier to follow and give thrills in your opinion ?

I think the new quake won't that popular because there's too many competitive fps out there splitting up all the communities plus I have a feeling people will still not care for quake as they always have. This puts more importance on trying their best to capture everyone upon release.

But not all those games have the backup of a mogul like Bethesda. If the game is solid and as already confirmed there will be big $$$ for the game, you can be damn sure most of the smaller projects, while also having their strengths, will shrink considerably.

Modes that have one focal point, are easier for spectate. Modes like 1flagctf, king of the hill, even that doom mode with moving domination zone, could be interesting.

Also free float spectating in combination with 1st pearson cam, will have to be accepted by many stubern quake - i only know duel players, but you know what, fuck'em, fuck'em right in the pussy. &#128522;
