Don't know about corruption.
Are they getting more profit-oriented? No. But since Business owns politics, they forge the environment in which they act to become more lenient towards their policies ("Corporations are people" and so on). Plus since it's been demonstrated that the state is there to bail you out when something goes wrong, they are taking more risks. Investment Bankers literally factor in state bailouts when they plan their completely unproductive financial engineering operations.

Corporations have always been and will always be corrupt. That's the point of a corporation - to steal and cheat people.

The big players often commit to winning a bigger market share most of all, not necessarily to gain money NOW as long as the board of directors and share holders are content with the figures.

Loans are pretty cheap at the moment and therefore these percentages are often going in favor of the biggest players only.

The bigger the company the easier it becomes to produce/trade more cheaply
A container from China, a truck, ... costs the same to everyone, even if you don't fill it to the brim)
Producing, procuring becomes cheaper by the quantity, the more you buy from one source, the more power you have over them, soon you will even dictate prices
You can afford to put up machines instead of hiring from certain quantities on, smaller companies won't be able to.

Problem for the West/national economy now is the companies are more likely to:
- hire abroad (cheaper) than domestic
- automation
- more likely to shift hiring to fewer, but higher educated employees
- earn just as much as before
- taxes, especially passive income are not rising

Therefore higher unemployment, less money from the state for more people in need, more education needed, other "good will" activities or benefits for the general population.

Crime might become more common, the richer people who own stuff (not just the popular 1%, rather the top 25% maybe still more than that nowadays, those who consider themselves "middle class") feel insecure and rifts between classes might become more prominent.

People who are affected by this or generally are more susceptible to manipulation will find an easy explanation, either by themselves or mostly by other, (to me) more dubious sources.

And this is just now.

It is projected that only 15% of the current desk jobs will prevail in the next decades. Most of them being redundant due to automation from computers and automats.

I'm 20000% pro progress, but current politics and the establisment that still sees it's advantages in the current system (be it specialized workers or employees, people who live from passive income or capital,....) is too passive to allow for actual change for the benefit of the broad public.


That's how I see it in general, of course there are too many people who just do things in spite of others, or "just" in their own favor, considered criminal by every standard, but are too easy to go through with it. But that's just the tip of the iceberg, often brandmarked in the media, but the real issues are somewhere else. And as long as the broader public still has an advantage from cheaper goods, high income, legacy tax advantages for questionable things they won't interested in changing things - just look what they do to give their children the advantage they might have had themselves.

What about all the cuts in pensions, lack of promotions, hiring teens cus they cheap, lack of unions etc. It feels like these days corporations are cutting corners wherever they can. Some of these are probably inevitable (globalization/outsourcing, automation) where things must first get bad before they get better but i feel like this is something bigger than that. I feel like politics can't keep up with big money anymore and the big things that people actually care about are slowly getting better but the majority of things are getting worse and corporations are learning new ways to fuck people over faster than ever.

I think there's too many unions...

Anyway, there's things to look at such as working conditions... Some things get worse, some get better. A lot of what you say I wouldn't even really attribute to being corrupt, just shortsightedness that is promoted by the structure of the system we are in. The question that gets asked is more likely "How do we make more money?" (the American dream) instead of "How do we screw people over?"

The minerals that make up your iPhone were probably mined by slaves, and then processed and assembled by other slaves. By "slaves" I mean underpaid, exploited workers. Then the carriage service you're using your iPhone on is probably mining your data behind your back for profit. The software you use on your iPhone probably does likewise.

Capitalism might only work well when there's a social class in poverty. In every developed country that class (or the majority of that class) may be "exported" to another, less developed country. The poor in India probably make your clothes. The poor in China probably make your electronics. The poor in Africa probably mine your minerals for your electronics.

If you're getting by fairly well, or if you're middle class or above it's easy to turn a blind eye to the more unseemly practices of corporations and capitalism in general.

ESR won't solve any country's economy, but we can still talk about the economy, corporations, life, and Quake.

Despite the fact you missed the clue of gienon's post I have a solution for problems you described. Let's forbid trading with India's clothes factories. Let's finish exploiting them and let's make all clothes ourselves. At least we will reduce unemployment in our countries.

If you think about it you will realize that you will become poorer than you are because you will have to pay x times more for clothes and a poverty class in India will starve to death without your money.

The fact that there are people having tons of money build from managing world trading is a price we pay for build world economy.

There's no obligation to give any money to corporations, but the truth is that you really need them. You want them to make you a computer, a video game, a car. You want them to make tasty food and beverages for you. You want them to build a plane and take you to interesting places. So you join the system and spend your time adding something to the system to use its benefits.

According to China. They worked hard for tens of years and now they are getting really advanced civilization. They are no longer cheap worker source. More and more things are getting designed in China. Life standard is getting better and better. They wouldn't achieve it without trading with the rest of the world. They added work value to world's system in exchange to high technology, knowledge and science.

Corporations are snowballing. That's why they perform good and while you need small companies to do small things, you need big companies to do big things.

You can't really do that either. You'd probably end up arrested for not respecting a variety of rules pretty much anywhere in the world where you'd try to do that.

I disagree. In most of the places in the world there would be no problem, the world is really huge. It will be hard to do so in countries like USA. When I was there on a trip I couldn't find a place to set up a tent without a threat of being caught by police or ranger. However even in US you have plenty of completely abandoned places where you will not see a human for hundred miles, e.g. Alaska.

You can't do that anywhere, but if you really want there is no problem at all.

its more of science vs spiritual search really, are we better off as human beings on this planet with all these gadgets that provide some convenience and physical comfort at the expense of a deeper life purpose, i just think people ought to have deeper goals in life than getting a better car or a house which science and corporations support really.

Looking at hospitals with all their gadgets. I would say yes.

you could also say science made progress only on physical side, people still die, they just live longer, but their life is still full of uncertainty and lack of deeper purpose. i can tolerate physical pain, but lack of purpose makes my life pointless.

Obviously they become more corrupt with each passing day. More corruption = more $$$, the only thing that matters for mentally handicaped people (ie its been proven that the best wall streeters are those that lack empathy due to brain damage, its one of the first things that brain damage does, it kills your empathy).

Too much sheeple to do anything, we are in that akward spot, too late to fix the system, too early to revolt. Try to eat healthy and have a gun, so you have higher survival chances when chaos ensues. Living in the country is a big advantage, cities will become death traps.
