You can go off it, but you don't want to. You perfected one thing, putting a lot of energy into it and becoming one of the best at it. Ofc you don't want to get out of your little kingdom. In a way, that's why Quakers stick around to the game and keep coming back. Nobody has those 10 thousands hours on any other game (and possibly any other hobby), to even remotely feel as good with those activities as they feel with Quake (admittedly, some do, and in fact spend time with other hobbies, but you get the point).

Also, this is how human brain works. We tend to develop further things we are good at, and abandon things we are not good at. Over time, this makes getting off a specialization harder and harder.

The biggest problem of this is when you start feeling alone, because almost nobody else loves what you love. And this solitude is often a downward spiral, as it makes you bitter and less sociable, scaring people off. But that's why there are sites like this one, where you still find people alike, and even if some toxicity is present, it still feels ok.

It's a good thing we are mortal after all.

10,000 hrs / 20 years = 500 hrs per year
/ 365 = 1.36986... hrs a day

now that I calculate that out, i guess that's pretty reasonable. not to mention pro quakers probably went 3+ hours a day sometimes.

I think you should participate more in various CA tournaments in QL and even in RFLX if there will be any. That way when your addiction transform into some achievments (even tho its not a quakecon and it wont bring you money) which are actually registered officially you wont regret about countless hours lost practicing shaft on thunderstruck etc.

has heartless 1v1'd h4l before?

years ago (2012-2013 or something) he did beat me 3 maps to 0 on thunder. At that time he was the only one that was able to beat me at 1v1 thunder (maybe also gizmoinaCtion, it was 50/50 against this player).

In 2013 ofc i still had 17" CRT 100hz at 1024x768, and 125fps. I also had 30+cm/360° + old razer abyssus @ 3500dpi sens 0.4 in ql (so yeah, about 30-31cm/360°). I also had wide lg beam and fov 100. Not trying to make excuses, he was better than me, just wanted to clarify the conditions.

Now that i'm playing with the abyssus 2014 (better shape and build quality than old abyssus, so more comfy to hold with your fingers) for years at 1800dpi 1000hz and sensitivity 1 in game (23.1cm/360°), i feel more comfy than ever. Also now I use "ultra" thin lg beam + fov 90 and 144hz 250fps. It improved my shaft, not hugely, but still significantly enough. Also old abyssus got the same sensor as 2014 version, so if i count my playtime with both old and "new" abyssus, i have like what, 5 years of playtime with it ?

More recently i played a 2v2 where he was playing with l1nkin, and me with a random (it was during his stream btw, i used the nick hellssss). The map was ofc thunderstruck. I played against him and my team m8 against l1nkin. I had most damages done and best score at the end of the match. Ofc we lost, but i didn't care about losing, what i wanted is that i made best score/dmgs. I even managed to outshaft him, so i was pleasantly surprised by my performance.
But that was only 1 game. And if he's up for some 1v1 thunder, i'm all for it, i feel ready ;). It's up to him at this point, not me. I mean, like i said, i would be really happy to play him a bo3 bo5 thunder 1v1.

Another thing however, his rockets are better than mine, and tbh i'm more scared of his rockets than his lg, but in 1v1 thunder there's enough space to dodge the rockets, so dunno really, i have to play him to be sure :)

I'd gladly giveaway $200 for a winner takes all grudgematch between you and h4l, given somebody bothers to organize it, streams it and it's played in three maps: yours (thunder), his (eyetoeye) and something neutral (whatever). Could crowdfund more for a better spectacle.

edit: BTW I don't mean this in a Jamerio-childish way of making silly bets no sane person is going to take in order to somehow boost my ego. yeah sure, hal has 1% of my experience... I play quake for a longer period than him, but he played a shitton of clan arena and also a shitton of practice against his bro stermy, which is like one of the best practice you can get really. I don't have any progamer brother to help me improve, i do it by myself.
And l1nkin is playing quake for a longer period than me with a lot of lan experience etc... But anyway when we played 2v2 i was against hal, not l1nkin, so whatever.

the main problem is that hal doesn't play eyetoeye CA, he only plays eyetoeye duel. I already asked him to play some eyetoeye CA 1v1 but he always declined my offer.
So basically he doesn't like 1v1 CA on eyetoeye and I don't like duel on eyetoeye.
We could then end up playing thunderstruck only :>
