Cheaters use illegal stuff while competing against fair competitors. Same with doping in sports. A lie is when someone is making false declarations to others, while knowing they are false.
So these have nothing to do with the runs in this movie.

That moment when you make your disclaimer as short and simple as possible, so as even the laziest viewers could read it and the dumbest ones could understand it; yet they either don't read it, or don't understand it.

Also, this disclaimer could serve as a hint: if you dislike it, feel free to not watch it! I mean, would I read a description and see that it is based on matches from ESWC that I'm not interested in (for instance). What would I do? I'd probably just close it, but surely not rank it zero just because I dislike the event, its rules or participants.

Sorry, I see no way to avoid those flicking moments when from POV. Capturing the demos mostly with free cameras would take much longer and I had had no skills for that.

Because these runs were not performed manually. The tools used for recording them are forbidden by the official DFWC rules.
All the records in this movie are faster than any human records up-to-date.

I can understand that tools will assist with moving the mouse to the correct angles, which is why we see the camera instantly change direction but why does it seem like there are jump-cuts in the players movement?

Maybe they aren't jump cuts, its just changes to the fov? Anyway, its incredibly confusing to watch.

had the same impression ("cuts" or rather flashes making it really hard and a partly annoying to watch, especially at the begining). not sure though if those were caused by wallcliping, robotic speed "mouse" turns, a mixture of these two, or video editing. some answer on this would be cool.

It falls in the "robotic mouse movement" category and kazzmir has the idea, it's about catching the angles.

When you run defrag with the CGaz hud enabled, you can get an idea of what's going on through a handy "acceleration bar" that shows you where you have to aim at in order to catch the air acceleration.

In a nutshell, as you go faster, the good areas get tighter and spread further apart. Beyond certain speeds, it becomes really tough to alternate from side to side AND to stay in the acceleration zone AND to perform a good sweep in order not only to keep on accelerating, but sometimes to not lose speed.

So in practice, in TAS runs you'll see the view angle being instantly snapped where it needs to be to catch the acceleration.
If the route isn't straight at all then you get that weird snapping completely to the side and then a smooth curve... in places where you have the room to get a lot of speed without crashing into something, it might be automated to get the maximum acceleration, and that's when you get the view fluttering at very wide angles and crazy speeds (this is how you clear bridge to rail on dm6 with a single jump at 125 fps).

Strafebots can land this jump easily. Even for a script using default q3 commands that's not a problem. In fact, hat's even possible for humans, although it's a very, very hard circle jump.

I have a folder with differebt b2r jumps, but that's on another PC. I'll post next time if I don't forget =) It has a bunch of scripted demos and 2 human demos landing this jump! One of them featured in the TEA-3 movie: http://www.igmdb.org/?m=650

hmstx gave a good brief explanation. I think you mean fast changing view angles (mostly flicking left-and-right hectically for optimal strafes).
No jumps or other parts were cut of the footage. When in pov, all the demos go start-to-end with no cuts or time-related effects. Well, just one short slowdown in the middle of map 4 cpm, intended to sync RJ with the music.
If you are sure you mean something else, not the robotic yaw angle changes, please provide timestamps and I'll answer.

I still dont understand how those plasma climbs are possible even with a script. he is holding it against the direction of movement and still gaining speed.

The motion blur, even at 60 fps, kinda kills the flickering acceleration bits, especially on dfwc2012-6 where there's a seriously wtf forward plasma climb.
Viewing the demo, or an unblurred 120fps video and being able to slow it down would show it's alternating between an air acceleration angle and a plasma hit that are VERY far apart, and what we see here just does not adequately capture the movement (like wheels appearing to be standing still or going backwards on film).

I seem to remember one should be able to pretty much air accelerate in the same way looking backwards with inverted movement, so I'm only guessing they're doing opposite things that fast because
a) it exploits yet another movement glitch
b) it works and has more visual impact than a perfect "regular" plasma climb :)

There are no new movement tricks in those horizontal plasma climbs. They are recorded so just for better visual perception.
I assume map 6 vq3 is being asked about. Jel strafed along the walls in between the plasma shots. Yes, it is possible in scripts.

There are 11-12 frames between plasma shots. When with Haste, even less. He wanted to make it as smooth as possible. Otherwise he could have turned around for the 1st horizontal plasma climb, then turn 90 degrees right for the next one, then turn, I don't know, 135 degrees left (?) to take GL etc. That might have looked even worse.

I used more habitual plasma climbs in my cpm demo on this map. As you can see, it is even less watchable.

I didn't know that! I heard that some of them (or both) were made with low timescale. There's a hint about it in the opening titles, when armors spin faster and slower than they're supposed to.

Oh yes, from what I remember it's staged with some usage of timescale in both of them. If memory serves, there's a shot or two at the end of the badge 3 with autoaim.

as a dfer, I love TAS runs because they produce some of the craziest shit I've seen, and they require different kinds of effort and work than a non-TAS run. I'm glad these runs were made just for this video.

I don't see what's peoples problem with TAS runs. As long as they are not submitted into competitions, they are really interesting to me. Its kinda cool to see the physics of the game exploited to the very max. Seeing how defrag gods lag so much behind this shows you how hard it is to move optimaly in quake. Wouldn't you like to see a perfect nurburgring lap with some hypercar just to see how much would top drivers lag behind it? How can't you appreciate the man vs the machine battle is beyond me

There's nothing interesting in chair being placed on the right spot. This however shows you optimal movement, perfect strafing, best routes.... You can learn something from this as opposed to aimbot footage. Congrats for completely missing the point

You can't reproduce the same movement, therefore you can't use the same routes, a human hand and mind can't do the same things. You don't learn shit from it, the flicks and angles made by the bot are impossible.

I can argue that you would probably learn more by playing with wallhack, since it would give you a better idea of the opponents habit movement and aim assist to help to develop motions for tracking, but that's absurdly dumb shit, just like what you are saying

I remember a demo of a guy with wallhack and aimbot versus anonymous Polosatiy. And Polosatiy won! Regardless of the opponent's cheats.

Aimbot/wallhack may be discouraging to opponents if they don't know you're using them. But if they know, or if they use it too, that's fine imo. I'd love watching a demo with aimbot vs aimbot. Both amateur level, and cypher/rapha level. That'd be really interesting, watching the strategies with perfect aim.

Defrag bots and scripts are a little bit different in the way that they don't win anybody personally. And they aren't included in the official rankings either. But again, I'd love watching an aimbot vs aimbot competition.

Always loved scripted runs, personally I find them very esthetically pleasing. Sort of allows you to take a look at what perfect movement within the quake engine would look like. Don't like the weird jitter in some of the runs tho, does that really help acceleration?

Yes. Unfortunately, when it comes to ultimate perfect strafes on a straight line, it has to flick left and right very rapidly. That's what humans can never do.

It is simple
If you don't have the knowledge to understand what's going on you will probably think it is lame.
Dqopb can confirm that there is alot of knowledge involved in order to make these bots.
It is not like you press a button and you are done.
There is alot of adjusting going on to find the perfect angles.
Then there is velocity snapping, which people who are not into defrag probably never heard of.
Over all, a nice movie.
It's the aesthetic that counts first and foremost.

this is pure art.. the openness of quake and the people making such stuff is why the game survived for so long and why it is such a beautiful thing.. programing mods, clients, designing levels, skins, models.. experimenting with everything this game is, studying the math behind the physics, i could go on and on...
everyone downplaying this or getting mad about it just dont know the depth of quake and proly started with ql

Wow, this is such a great movie! I love the dedication you guys put in to find these awesome routes and then optimising them to what is theoretically possible. It's especially interesting to see that I found some of these routes during the competition but was not able to land them in time (or will be ever).
